Under the Rust: The Beauty of a Blacksmith Hammer. Restoration.

  • Hello everyone!🙌
    Today I have a big old hammer for restoration! This hammer was found during excavations. On this territory, more than 300 years ago, there was a large settlement of the Slavs. The hammer was severely deformed on both sides, we assumed that these were deformations from strong impacts on the anvil.
    Restoration process.
    This time I used electrolysis to remove rust. Thoroughly cleaned the metal for good contact with the wire.
    I connected the second wire to a piece of stainless steel pipe. Used a car battery charger.
    Instead of stainless metal, you can use any other metal part, but it is much more efficient to use a pipe, since the impact on the object comes from all sides.
    After 6 hours of electrolysis, I only needed to wash the hammer from black plaque.
    I used an ordinary handle from the market, but I corrected it a little for more convenient use.
    I am very pleased with the result, and I hope you enjoy this video too (your likes are the best reward for me❤)

      @@aprilshippy9202 steel, obviously! As for carbon in it... With such an old hammer there's no way to know. It may be crucible steel or bloom steel, and in both cases there's no way to know how much carbon is in there, unless you send this hammer (or it's grinded metal from angle grinding it) to lab analysis.

    PLEASE be careful with electro-rust removal! That bucket, if it contains stainless steel, you just made a super-lethal cancer causing agent. So if you came in contact with the liquid after processing or even inhaled the vapors coming off, tell your doctor. Seriously.

    • @ITBR_Restoration

      Thanks for warning. But I think you're exaggerating a little.
      In my last video, I got rid of the stainless pipe, and used an iron plate for electrolysis👍

    • @InformationIsTheEdge

      @@ITBR_Restoration I wish I was exaggerating. Having stainless steel in your electric circuit, particularly as an anode, you will manufacture hexavalent chromium or chromium-6. Nasty stuff even in trace amounts. Please, tell your doctor that you've been exposed. Which is wiser, mention it and get out in front of any potential danger or do a Jim Henson and wait and see? And wherever that liquid went, it is still dangerous.

    Very unique restoration, and process. That is a French pattern cross peen hammer. I have to tell you that you hung in upside down, and the corners of the peen itself are far too sharp, but that won’t matter much unless you plan on actually smithing with it.

    While I love seeing super-shiny tool & knife restorations, I think the minimalist method used on this hammer was just perfect. It shows respect for the hammer. The many years of work that it endured at a harsh forge & anvil are preserved and exhibited in its irregular surfaces.

    You made it look nice... but failed to Restore it to working order. The straight peen is too thick & squared off, the front face has all those divots, & lastly the handle doesn't have any swells where you would want for forging. You made a nice looking prop.

  • @thebeardedchad
    @thebeardedchad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    The white stuff was not from baking soda. That was a reaction because you're never supposed to use stainless steel in electrolysis. Like you're never supposed to weld galvanized pipe because there are other more deadly materials mixed into that steel. I believe that residue was chromium which is actually very bad to inhale

    • @ITBR_Restoration
      @ITBR_Restoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you are wrong! Stainless steel together with baking soda is absolutely safe for electrolysis! If I used galvanized metal and, for example, salt, then there would really be harmful fumes!

    • @ridgebackman1577
      @ridgebackman1577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Chad is correct I’ve used this method of rust removal for over 20yrs. One of the first things taught is never use stainless as it produces chromium which is very poisonous. Before sending me a you’re wrong message just google it,it takes 2 seconds and will save you from looking like an ass and 🤞you’ll have a little less cancer in your future. Ps I really hope you didn’t put your hands in that water or pour it into a municipal water way it’s highly toxic.

    • @chas1355
      @chas1355 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are totally correct. Using stainless in the electrolysis process is deadly dangerous. It creates covalent chromium in the process which is one of the most dangerous substances on the face of the planet. It's one of those substances that once you create it you can't get rid of it. It lasts forever. Watch the movie Erin Brockovich and you'll see how deadly that stuff can be. It kills slowly. That movie is a totally true story how a power company dumping some of that poisoned a whole town and ended costing PG&E a fortune. You never use an metal on that positive electrode other than raw iron or steel. I cringed when I saw that stainless and wondered where he dumped that liquid.

    Unless you are trying to emulate Odin the one eyed, I would not put a recess in the hammer body behind the hammer face. It may look cool but is a real stress raiser and will give rise to seriously dangerous steel splinters. These are bad news and I escaped losing an eye by less than an inch. Also, head is on back to front Otherwise nice restoration good job !

    well done. only things id say are the face of a hammer needs to be polished and you need to take the shoulders off the wood where the handle fits in the eye.
