    Mark Gurman also said the highest end M4 family chip would support 512GB unified memory. So far the M4 family has increased maximum memory capacity by 2x with each tier.
    M4 = 32GB, M4 Pro = 64GB, M4 Max = 128GB.
    This means the M4 Ultra should support 256GB of memory. A chip with 512GB memory would have to be an M4 Extreme

      The M4 Max does not appear to have the interposer connections, ergo, it’s much more likely that the M4 Ultra will be a single chip, likely with an interposer that will be used in a 2 die configuration to create the M4 Extreme. Max is probably correct about that.
      Alternatively, they may go with a dual-socket approach, with some very high bandwidth interconnection, but since chip to chip bonding has notable power and latency benefits, that seems notably less likely.

    If Apple was serious about the Mac Pro, they would create a bunch of expansion cards for it and sell the base model at a lower price. That's what it should be for. Like imagine an Apple-designed dedicated GPU... it would blow NVidia out of the water and probably bury AMD.

    • @Techmej
      @Techmej วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      The only reason that it’s so powerful in the first place is because of the fact that it’s so tightly integrated. Once you make it into an expansion card, it would be the weakest GPU on the market.

    • @darkwoodmovies
      @darkwoodmovies วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @Techmej The unified memory architecture rocks, but their GPUs are still notably weaker than most of the top-tier competition. The M* chips are more efficiency than raw performance. IMO a Mac Pro should be the one Mac where they let loose and allow massive chips with massive power draws.

    If the Mac Pro doesn't have another level of processor in, the only reason for this tower is the PCI slots.
    However, with zero support of 3rd party video card, 10Gb ethernet is now either built-in or via BTO, Thunderbolt 5 based storage can reach the speed close to Apple's internal SSD etc. The only reason left for PCI slots, IMO, is for the specialized I/O cards and pretty much it.

    I'm wondering if they're referring to it as hydra, like many heads, because actually the Mac Pro will have a base model with e.g. an m4 ultra perhaps, but then allow the installation of up to 3 (?) additional m4 ultras as external processors.... which somehow have some kind of new interconnect tech that lets all 4 'cards' work as one piece of hardware like one giant graphics card/cpu as far as the o/s is concerned. Then you'd be able to buy a base model at a lower price and then add extra computing units as upgrades for those who have the cash (20,000?) .... so the pro can then target people of a range of budgets instead of just being locked in as a very expensive 'extreme' model.

    2 x M4 Ultra would be slower than 4 x M4 Max? I don't know where you get that, but it would be the reverse since you would have up to 2 "hops" to go from one M4 Ultra on one side to another one on the other side, whereas 4 x M4 Max would only have 1 "hop" to go from 1 M4 Max to any other. You would also have 4 "lanes" to reach memory instead of 2.

    • @MaxTechOfficial

    • @Traumatree
      @Traumatree วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@MaxTechOfficial Because there is no inter-connect on the M4 Max - all is on one-die. Ultra will get 2 x M4 Max, and Extreme will get 4 x Max that will 'talk' directly to each other (like in a ring bus topology). 2 x Ultra would be like AMD's Infinity Fabric and chiplet architecture and you would get some induced latency from one M4 Max on a side (say Ultra #1 is like CCD1) to another M4 Max on the other side (CCD2 in AMD's terminology).

    The case for the Mac Pro goes well beyond bragging rights. If Apple is serious about spatial computing, it will need spatial content and that pushes our computational capability to the limits. It makes sense the Vision Pro is a spatial consumption and computing device with the Mac Pro as a spatial creation device. The hardware requirements would extend beyond M4 Ultra and possibly require dedicated spatial computing cards with advanced immersive rendering capabilities. My thoughts are that the M4 Ultra will be a single-die SoC and the M4 extreme will include two M4 Ultra dies. The earliest hint would be the lack of UltraFusion connector on the M4 Max die shot but I can't seem to find one.

  • @Alex-vp4ky
    @Alex-vp4ky 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    6:22 Pretty sure this would still fundamentally be the same issue. Otherwise Apple could’ve done this already in the m2 gen.
    Sure devils advocate, they couldn’t get the ultra fusion/connect part right. But if it was truly as simple as making 2 ultras work rather than 4 maxes-that still could’ve been done in m3.
    So this probably means that beyond 2 chips, nothing else can be added for efficiency.

    • @Alex-vp4ky
      @Alex-vp4ky 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      So either the unreleased chip Marc gurman mention is simple a quietly cancelled designation just like in the m1 gen. Or they simply have a new die config completely separate. Could be a stop gap measure, could be the way forward.
      And on the subject of the Mac Pro being useless-well it already is and Apple doesn’t mind charging full price for it anyways. And the trashcan Mac sat for yrs without an update and felt useless.
      Dont underestimate apples willingness to leave products in a state of uselessness 😂

    The best option for Apple's macOS would be to overcome their past differences with NVidia and provide complete support for any PC-centric GPU that the end-user might wish to use. NVidia, AMD, or Intel discrete GPU's would (theoretically) all gain macOS drivers. If you wanted to upgrade a "trash can" Mac Pro with a modern Intel GPU, for example. Or an Intel 14th-gen Hackintosh with an AMD 7000 series GPU. If the current stock of PC-centric GPU's need some tweaking to effectively work with macOS, then let the manufacturer's in on any needed technical info.

    Apple might as well give up on those really high end chips. Who's going to buy those uktra-expensive computers? Only a few diehard Apple users and Apple won't make much money from that. Apple is strictly a profit-driven company and doesn't waste money on things that don't make plenty of money for them. Nvidia owns the GPU market so Apple can't beat them with an integrated GPU that's fixed to a CPU. It won't be powerful enough against a full card GPU that draws 600 watts for insane processing power. Apple needs to stick to what it's good at which is making highly efficient chips for the average consumer. I would have loved to see an Extreme chip from Apple but I wouldn't need anything close to that. I was sad to hear it was canceled but I fully understand Apple's position. Don't waste money making stuff they can't sell to the masses. Apple learned that much from the Vision Pro.
