Mark Gurman also said the highest end M4 family chip would support 512GB unified memory. So far the M4 family has increased maximum memory capacity by 2x with each tier. M4 = 32GB, M4 Pro = 64GB, M4 Max = 128GB. This means the M4 Ultra should support 256GB of memory. A chip with 512GB memory would have to be an M4 Extreme
The M4 Max does not appear to have the interposer connections, ergo, it’s much more likely that the M4 Ultra will be a single chip, likely with an interposer that will be used in a 2 die configuration to create the M4 Extreme. Max is probably correct about that. Alternatively, they may go with a dual-socket approach, with some very high bandwidth interconnection, but since chip to chip bonding has notable power and latency benefits, that seems notably less likely.
The M4 Extreme will not ship till the end of 2025 because Apple is using it to built out their Apple Intelligence SERVER INFRASTRUCTURE. They said many times that they are using Apple Silicon for this and it will take them awhile to fully build out something that scales to user demand.
Agree that they are working on something different for the Mac Pro. Apple is famous for doing this. They will let a product stagnate until they are ready.
If Apple was serious about the Mac Pro, they would create a bunch of expansion cards for it and sell the base model at a lower price. That's what it should be for. Like imagine an Apple-designed dedicated GPU... it would blow NVidia out of the water and probably bury AMD.
The only reason that it’s so powerful in the first place is because of the fact that it’s so tightly integrated. Once you make it into an expansion card, it would be the weakest GPU on the market.
@Techmej The unified memory architecture rocks, but their GPUs are still notably weaker than most of the top-tier competition. The M* chips are more efficiency than raw performance. IMO a Mac Pro should be the one Mac where they let loose and allow massive chips with massive power draws.
@Techmej Well I'm just saying, it would be cool if they had something to fill that space with. Heck, even if it was some HDD RAID expansion cards, or IO cards, or something like the afterburner thing they had a while back. They could go wild and sell accessories like hotcakes.
@ they already have slots for IO and storage, and the media engine is the equivalent of 7 afterburners. I’m not at all disagreeing that the Mac Pro is a complete waste of money, but there will always be compromises if they make something too expandable.
M4 Ultra is supposed to be in Mac Srudio (less than 400W power supply), the Mac Pro should use something with also doubled performance.. no need the 1000W power supply to put the same 300W limited chip inside.
If the Mac Pro doesn't have another level of processor in, the only reason for this tower is the PCI slots. However, with zero support of 3rd party video card, 10Gb ethernet is now either built-in or via BTO, Thunderbolt 5 based storage can reach the speed close to Apple's internal SSD etc. The only reason left for PCI slots, IMO, is for the specialized I/O cards and pretty much it.

The case for the Mac Pro goes well beyond bragging rights. If Apple is serious about spatial computing, it will need spatial content and that pushes our computational capability to the limits. The hardware requirements would extend beyond M4 Ultra and possibly require dedicated spatial computing cards with advanced immersive rendering capabilities. My thoughts are that the M4 Ultra will be a single-die SoC and the M4 extreme will include two M4 Ultra dies. The earliest hint would be the lack of UltraFusion connector on the M4 Max die shot but I can't seem to find one.
6:22 Pretty sure this would still fundamentally be the same issue. Otherwise Apple could’ve done this already in the m2 gen. Sure devils advocate, they couldn’t get the ultra fusion/connect part right. But if it was truly as simple as making 2 ultras work rather than 4 maxes-that still could’ve been done in m3. So this probably means that beyond 2 chips, nothing else can be added for efficiency.
So either the unreleased chip Marc gurman mention is simple a quietly cancelled designation just like in the m1 gen. Or they simply have a new die config completely separate. The best option for Apple's macOS would be to overcome their past differences with NVidia and provide complete support for any PC-centric GPU that the end-user might wish to use. On the other hand everything which needs fast GPU is on pc since forever because of Nvidia and Cuda

Sounds like ya have a cold as well :( WE are almost over it I hope (Common cold)
there wukk not be any m4 extreme, it doesn not work with the architecture of the apple silicon chips. there will only be an m4 ultra if anything..this is just cliickbait bullcrap
All right I'm going to throw myself into this fight as well because I know I like to do this argument so let me explain to you my story of my Mac and then we'll talk about this M4 extreme processor that you guys are talking about so I had my first iMac which was a 2007 model white plastic 20 inch iMac and then I upgraded to the Mac pro which was the good thing that I did then I went for the 4K first generation iMac which I bought in 2015 and the beautiful thing actually about this actually I got in 2016 sorry but the beautiful thing was I had a proper iMac now regarding the Mac pro I am a musician I use a lot of plugins Waves plugins and for me this is a must this is a must I use a lot of uad plugins and I have a uad expansion board I'm also a pro tools user so for me these expansion slots are very important and also the ram is important as well now the Apple Mac pro with the M2 ultra does come with these expansion boards but I can't upgrade my memory I cannot upgrade my memory I mean come on I could do that with the Intel Macpro even though I don't own one you know I could go buy an Intel Mac pro and get it over with now in regards to this I have a better solution why not Apple just go to AMD and say look you are going to be the sole provider of the M4 or excuse me the Mac pros don't put them for extreme don't put them for ultra just put an AMD processor that's very very fast this would be good for the end user and then you still will earn money from your other products because there's going to be a niche market for the end user and people who don't want the Mac pro with the AMD processor can just get you know the studio or the Mac studio sure it's going to be a pain for Apple to do the macos sequoia or the next release on an AMD processor and of course all the other companies have to optimize their software but they're already doing this so there's no problem for that and plus it's going to be for niche market and I tell you something else the Mac pro will sell like hotcakes especially when you're talking about Hollywood the music industry the production that we use in our music I use a lot of orchestral plugins that are 1 TB and they require more than 300 gigabytes of memory so this is not a big problem for me what my main concern is is now I got to upgrade to a new desktop and what do I do with my orchestral plugins my contact files all that stuff that I have I have about $80,000 worth of plugins and Apple has just thrown it all in the garbage because most of those plugins require a lot of processing power and a lot of RAM but I want to hear your thoughts guys on this let me know when you guys think I mean and just keep up the good work I mean you guys are doing a great job and subscribe to your channel but let me hear your thoughts I mean with apple do this I think Apple would do this because the last ditch effort for the pro customers otherwise all pro customers may have to go to Windows and that's not what Apple wants have a nice day
Apple needs faster more GPU cores than CPU cores. Even the M4 Max is not really fast agaist Nvida. It would make more sense to have a ultra with more NPU and GPU cores and no CPU cores to come somewhere close to a 4090 or then the 50x series... On the other hand everything which needs fast GPU is on pc since forever because of Nvidia and Cuda
Please stop facillitating and benefitting from the tobacco industry adds!!! Really disappointing to see such a great team /channel succomb to the money-lure. Loosing standing and my support in the process. We just have to not let the tobacco industry out of their squeeze an thus empowering them to lure our kids into yet another nicotine addiction!
I am so disappointed I had to post/comment as this is not the first time. Please join me by replying and thumbing down on this released video ! And Max please justify this to me rather inexplicably if not inexcusable decision… And compliments with the otherwise great channel /work you /your team does!
Kind regards
4:44 uff my ears. "Ibiza" is pronounced "iˈβiθa", not "aɪˈβiza". lol
going with the Spanish vibe Apple seems to be using, "Hidra" should be pronounced "ˈidɾa", since they didn't spell it as "hydra".
Just cancel the Mac Pro already.
