Takumi is possessive. He offered to marry Hachi because she had to option to go to Nobu, and he wanted to ‘win’ her, aka control her. And he gets his way and totally isolates her. He seems to consider Hachi a pet, and he even uses her to improve his image later. He clearly enjoys her attention and affection, but he truly wants to possess her in a very toxic way, a way which society romanticizes because he’s rich and famous.
Nobu didn't step up to take responsibility when the time was do, Takumi with all of his massive flaws, when it came to take is responsibilities he did it without batting an eye, and while their relationship had a rocky start by the end his love for Hachi was clearly genuine.
Ren was withdrawing from drugs when he was driving to pick Layla (Reira) up, he hallucinated and thought he saw Nana on the roof of a building when it was really a stray black cat, it was heavy snow and he was already speeding bc he knew he was being pursued by journalists; so when he averted his attention from the road when he was caught off guard by the hallucination; he lost control of his car and plowed into the side of the building.
Nana, when stripped of everything else, is a story about a group of young 20 somethings (except Shin) who are basically incapable of being their own person. The only ones who are even relatively self reliant are Yasu and Takumi (although they also have issues, they just don’t allow themselves to be vulnerable about it). But it’s so relatable because so many of us have experienced being in these kind of emotional incestuous friend groups. And it’s captivating because instead of just letting the characters win and get what they ultimately want… the characters actually face real consequences for their actions. And we get to see them either learn and grow, or not learn and crumble. Cuz that is how real life works.
Have you seen the Nana live action movie? It was incredible. The woman they got to play Nana O. Looked exactly like her and was actually a very popular singer in Japan at the time. She totally killed the Nana soundtrack! It’s worth it just for the music alone!
@@CommunitySpIash just search for Nana Glamorous Sky and watch the music video. It’ll show all the actors and actresses that play the parts in the movie.
Mika Nakashima is a legend of her own right and they specifically chose her because she had some more upbringing to character if I remember correctly, she was also raised as an orphan and came from essentially nothing to become one of the biggest pop stars in Japan at the time
Love your breakdown on Nana except for Junko. Junko has such a bad Rap in the community and while we don't see as much of her and Hachi's friendship compared to others isn't it safe to say Hachi is a terrible friend to Junko? She only runs to her when she needs something. And the way Hachi reacts to Junko announcing she was going to her dream school is horrible. Art school was an extremely important dream to Junko and frankly Hachi never gave it the respect it deserves. She wasn't serious about it when they were in community college and she wasn't respecting Shoji's pursuits in school either when he got a new computer. Hachi like everyone else is very flawed and didn't deserve to be cheated on- but she isn't ever shown to be am equal friend to Junko from what I can recall. She's always Hachi's backup support. And she does a fairly good job at it specially after she's pregnant.
i think one of the main themes of Nana has to be lonlieness, like its a carrying aspect in majority of the character's relationships. Especially with Reira and Shin. Both of them were undoubtedly lonely, especially Reira who used Shin's services to receive emotional reassurance whereas Shin who's working as a prostitute tries to find a motherly figure in the women he meets. I don't nessecarily think that she had that relationship with Shin because he was a minor, rather because she was more interested in the relationship she had with him. One where she would pay him for his services, because as someone who's sheltered and lacks social skills and the time to meet new people she has the money to make up for it. imo she was more interested in paying for the service she wanted, which is the emotional attention she receives from Shin rather than the physical. i think the real tragedy of Nana is the character's unresolved traumas, and the inability to express themselves freely.
About the hachi-nobu relationship, I always thought that hachi purposefully push Nobu away by not saying anything. If you read the manga you can clearly see that nobu ask if he is the father etc and hachi don’t say no, she just don’t say anything because she KNOW that Nobu would throw away his dream to try to take care of her and the baby while takumi would be able to do it without issue and nobu can continue to play music with nana. Hachi chose to go with takumi when nobu was talking about going back to his parents
This would also explain why she takes so much from takumi, she actually made the choice to go with him, to preserve the dream of Blast. Because she was their biggest fan
@@NoOne-iq8pb why do you think, she started to act like she liked Takumi? Ik she liked the Takumi from the band but not as the person he was. But at some point she says I don't like Nobu, i was confused and it is Takumi that I like. Was she trying to get into the role of a good housewife or was it some kind of guilt?
I have to push back on your Junko take, I personally don’t think Hachi was much of a friend to Junko, in the beginning she turns to Junko and Kyosuke for so much emotional support and companionship and advice which she doesn’t even take. I am biased cause I have been the Junko in frienships with people like Hachi and its really draining to have someone who’s your age, lean on you and always look to you as if you’re their parent. We never really see Hachi check in with Junko or ask how she’s doing.
Ur pov of Nobu & Hachi really opened my eyes to the reality of them as a couple and changed my perspective! I would love to see u talk about Hachi’s friendship with Junko and and Kyosyke
17:53 she is 20. she was yesterday 19, so a teenager like Shin. She’s only 4 years older than him. Hachi was definitely not a mother figure she’s like Shin in her youth 😭. But I loved their friendship
NANA my favourite man of all time I read it way too young and I’m very attached to it, but it is so important and I really recommended to every single manga reader even though most people don’t take me up on that I wish more people would read it these days. It’s a masterpiece. Also, I think when you touched on me the reason why you feel he’s acting out of character is because abusers don’t act abusive 100% of the time otherwise they would have no one around to abuse someone had a lot of similar life experiences with Hachi because I also was young and dumb and wanted to be loved. The thing about intimate partner abuse is that they have to be kind enough or sweet enough or charming enough to have someone to abuse. That’s why people so often find it hard to believe when women tell them about the things someone has done to them because their image of them is not the same. They don’t think they would do that, but in reality abusers are usually very likeable and well liked people because they need to have people around if they’re going to be toxic they need to have reasons for their victims to stay and they need plausible deniability if they leave. A really well written abuser because when he is with Hachi, he can be cruel and manipulative, but he’s also sweet and he does genuinely seem to care at least a bit for her even if it’s more like she’s his pet. It’s not impossible for an abuser to care for someone most of the time they do. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter they’re still abusive. They still hurt people.
@@CommunitySpIash I’m currently reading neighborhood story and a lot of similar drama but a bit more wholesome (at least after volume one). Once I finish…because those are like $25 a volume, I’m turning my attention to nana! Appreciate the reply fam!
Takumi is a narcisistic man. If you want to understand him, you need to understand how narcissitc people are first. Same with the Japanese mentality and social issues from that time. (Last one goes for everyone actually, for the whole Manga) Then everything will be clear. :)
Great video! It was nice to hear your thoughts on Nana and the moments that made you emotional ❤ Yasu was my favorite when I read the series bc he felt the least problematic and that made him sexy haha
This video did not dissapoint! I love this deep dive so much -One of the things I find interesting about Rens and Nanas relationship is that it's very similar to Sid and Nancy the singers. Sid was heavily addicted to drugs and the dynamic between those two is almost the same - Shion and Yasu should have definitely been together they they suit each other the best - Tamukis characters really interesting he's very much a narrcicist with the way he behaves Nobu irritated me because if he wasn't such a coward things would have been so different 🤣😂 I can't wait for the future chapters I wonder how Nana got to England can't wait to see how that all plays out
Nana is one of my favorite manga and the anime was good. If i could be as fashionable as either Nana. I may have to go find my old Shojo Beats and reread all I can.
I guess one can find some bad thing and judgement about each character. It's just realistic. In the end in my opinion it comes down to who reflects on their actions and who doesn't. And well Takumi surely reflects the least about anything. I always come to defend Nobu in some way because he makes wrong decisions from time to time but following him in the story just makes your realize he is young and just wants everybody happy and this leads to stupid stuff for sure. I do not think he did not support Hachi, he just accepted her decision I guess he meant to show respect for that. Also Junko tries to be a friend but it's just her personallity how she expresses things. I believe it's not always possible to act exactly how one needs it, but she at least tries to be there, she shows up anyhow.
