@@Talitha-hv3ze$2.50 for a bag of candy at Dollar Tree Vs $8 for the same size bag at the movie theatre. If I could smuggle in a bottle of pepsi I would.
Most of all this is pretty accurate but it is missing some context. Ticket prices are usually so high because studios make a majority of the money off ticket sales. Depending on the studio (I.E. Disney tends to take a higher cut than say WB) and how long the movie has been showing (first week vs a month or two in), the actual theatre itself makes a pitiful amount of money from it. This is why the concessions are so expensive, theatres only way of making any real money is through the concessions which is why the prices are marked up a bit. Even without the mark up, concessions would still be more expensive at theatres than at stores due to the fact that convenient stores buy stock in bulk and therefore can sell at a lower price while theatres order stock based on predicted demand so they can't actually make any profit from marking down the prices like stores do. I'm not entirely sure about the marked up price for 3D, Imax and other display types of movies but if I had to imagine, the additional money is probably also calculated into the sale share. Theatres also have no control over the quality of the film itself which is why they sell you the experience. Especially with streaming services, the 'experience' is the only reason people go to a theatre anyway. Being in a big room with surround sound and a bunch of other like minded people to watch a huge film is why most people go to a theatre nowadays. If you want to support your local theatre, buy concessions. If you dont really care, just watch the movie at home if possible. But regardless of what you do, dont mistreat the employees. They are not paid enough to deal with your bs.
The only theatre I go to regularly is an independent(Highland Cinema) in cottage country. The ticket prices are lower, food prices are reasonable, there is a museum of memorabilia to look at while waiting for your movie and the theatres themselves are decked out with vintage art deco theatre interiors.

I used to work at a movie theater, and it is very honest indeed. Two thing you could have added. Popcorn is the one food that cures insomnia, wonder why people fall asleep in theaters. Also, Enjoy the fact that the sound in the trailers and feature presentation reel is always louder than the feature presentation itself (another trick they use to make the commercials the most dominant).
The landlord thing has been done to death. If you want to see something novel what you need to see is the horror of dealing with tenets. For every one bad landlord there are thousands of horrible tenets who screwed over their landlord who has to add even more rules so as to make it even harder for the nest tenet to screw them over the next time. Remember there are two sides to every story that is if you are actually hearing a real story that was not just make up to make a good story as its extremely easy just to lie on the internet. Now since you never hear the other side of the story from the landlord who that tenet tried to screw over so the tenet can get out of actually paying the landlord what they are owed. How would you like it if your job fired you owing you six months of back pay just saying I don't feel like paying you and the courts telling you well its your problem to collect your back pay as we won't lift a finger to help you that is exactly what happens to landlords every day. Thousands of bad tenets screw over their landlords out of their monthly wages every day and the courts makes it even harder for landlords to collect their wages just because their customers just don't want to pay what they owe.
As a small time film maker, I must say this is spot on. The theaters only get revenue from all the junk food they sell. The money from the tickets goes to the film producers. And it depends on which theater you're at, but some have a cleaner environment than others.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 Yeah, you're right. The point was, the theater didn't get a cut. No wonder the concessions are stupid expensive, but who can blame them. They got to stay above water somehow.

If you’re still in high school and wanting a summer job(and don’t actually have living expenses), a movie theater job is a great one. I worked at one for over 4 years, and they always let us see movies for free and gave us around 15% discount for concessions. While you work there, do your best to stay on the good side of all the managers and coworkers(you never know who will get promoted) because they might let you see movies for free even after you stop working there! The only time I pay for movies is on weekends because it’s too busy to give free seats. They usually let me bring a couple family members or a friend too. This really taught me that kindness and respect can go a very long way at any job you work at. Don’t suck up to people though, managers can always tell if you’re genuine or not. Simply do your job well and be a like-able person. Keep in mind that free movies were a part of the employee benefits at my place, so if your theater doesn’t let employees see movies for free, it’s unlikely they will let you in for free as a former employee. I’m not sure if my experience is common, but you shouldn’t really be getting on anyone’s bad side anyway. Also, if you’re an usher, checking for contraband can make your managers happy because it makes people spend their life savings on concessions. (People, if you don’t want to get caught, just hide them underneath your clothes, no bags or baby strollers. Medical conditions weren’t a good excuse either, unless whatever drink you had was sugar free.)
Really surprised the pandemic didn’t drive a stake through the heart of the theater “experience.” As Mom used to say, we have soda and popcorn at home.

That's the whole point of going to a theater. Getting to see trailers. Gtfo
“Force you”? You’re not forced to watch anything dude
Before the trailers became virtual synopses with spoilers, people loved seeing them. I resented when they began showing product commercials about 20 years ago. Just another revenue stream at the guests' expense.
If you go to movie theatres that have reserved seating, then just show up later than the official showtime if you don't like trailers. Personally, I like watching them. I feel you, though, if your favorite theatre doesn't have reserved seating and you don't like the fluff at the beginning.

I worked at a theater in San Francisco which had 8 theaters, with not just several concession stands, but cafes. They also had film festivals with a lot of celebs. Those were the good days before everything started turning the movie experience into a joke.
I worked at a theatre for 10 years. People would complain about the movie prices, while our staff made minimum wage: most discounts were literally 25 cents off of the total.
I remember filling up my personal cup and an older couple asking why I’m allowed to do that and that they should be able to bring their own cups too. I was in uniform and made 7.25/hour. The least my boss could do is let us have drinks that are already insanely profitable.

@@ravenlorans How? I must know lol.
Cinemas buy boxes, not packs, same as a convenience store. Supermarkets buy in "bulk".

As a small time film maker, I must say this is spot on. The theaters only get revenue from all the junk food they sell. The money from the tickets goes to the film producers. And it depends on which theater you're at, but some have a cleaner environment than others.
Sometimes actors get a cut of the ticket sales too.
