Pioneer SA-6500 II Stereo Amplifier Repair

  • I replaced the 2 output transistors because it was repaired last time with a non-matching pair. I trash picked this amp with a matching receiver. The receiver has a broken power switch so I may or may not repair that unless I can find the right one. I also will be re-capping this in a future video. Even with old caps it sounds really nice. Long video. Hope you like it...

    Love the clarity and detail of your vids, it's nice to clearly hear what you're doing and see the actual work being done instead of a blurry out of focus mess.
    Just picked one of these amps, but it keeps blowing the 5A fuses. I initially thought it was bad capacitors, but from what I've been reading, it seems more likely the output transistors may be to blame. I've never tried replacing these type before, so this vid is perfect.
    Great tip using the pliers to help distance/separate the solder from the other joints, I've never seen that trade secret before. Keep up the great work!

    Didn't expect to find a video on fixing my SA6500-ii but here it is. Mine was working well as my garage amp but after accidentally hooking up a turntable with a shorted channel it stopped working. Great video and gives me the confidence to tackle the repair. Not sure if its transistors at fault but step by step I will track it down.

    This unit was really bad about blowing output transistors. I have one stored that I would like to repair. It does not like to be run at its full rated output (not even close) and it also does not like difficult loads. As long as you don't rock out too hard, it is ok. A good friend gave this to me after the third failure. It has been packed away a long time, but I do have the service manual. May start to look for output transistors, even if I settle for after market.

      I had these fail about five years later. I put oversized transistors in and so far so good. I cant recall the part#s but they were rated 1.5X higher wattage wise. I think the biasing is very touchy. I don't quite understand their method here.

      that is where I got them as well. Id make sure the resistors around that transistor are good and within spec. Usually shorted speakers cause this damage but so can bad filter caps and resistors drifting out of value.

    Hi Frank, thanks for the excellent vid. I have a SA 6500 II in my garage as well, it was fixed several years ago and in the bag of replaced parts there were 2 NEC npn/pnp and another smaller transistor. It works well but one channel doesn't go to zero volume now. Any idea where to look? Would the bias affect it like this?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! These are great amps. As far as your volume issue, check the volume pot grounds. That can happen if you lose a ground usually. I know the volume pots can be finicky of they are dirty.
      Ideally a scope would be the best way to find the issue but I bet if you check the grounds in the volume and tone section you may find the issue. You may also want to check the biasing. The service manual is free online and goes over the jumpers that you use for bias testing.

    Hi Frank, I would very much appreciate your advice. I have a vintage Pioneer SA 1520 stereo amplifier which I bought in 1991 together with a CD Player, a cassette changer/recorder and a pair of two-woofer, two tweeter one midrange speakers. Now I want to add more base sound to my equipment by incorporating a modern sub-woofer. My doubt is whether I can adapt the subwoofer connectors to my amp´s spring clip terminals using banana plug connectors or other type of adaptor? if so, would sound quality be affected in any way? if this works out then I could even contemplate the possiblity of buying a new pair of speakers (ELAC, KLIPSCH, etc) . Thanks for your time

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alonso! There are 2 easy ways to do this. Many subwoofers have High level (speaker level)inputs as well as low level(RCA type). You would wire the subwoofer between each speaker and the amp. The signal would go to the sub via the high level in, and then back out to the speaker. Similar to a Bose Acoustimass of the same era. Your amp also supports low level output after the volume control, On the back there are 2 little jumpers between the 'adapter' ports. You could use two RCA female to dual male adapters to bridge the adapter output/input(replacing the jumpers) and then run a long stereo RCA cable to the subwoofer. I would prefer the second option as it would likely sound better. However, if your L/R main speakers are not far from the amp, then using the high level option would be just as good. The low level option is better if the sub has to be far away physically from the amp or speakers. www.manualscenter.com/manuals/pioneer/sa1520-owner-manual.html page 4 of the manual shows the adapter plugs on the lower right of the back of the amp.

      I don't have a list unfortunately but what I can tell you is that I would recap any power supply capacitor. The signal caps should be fine. Anything located near a heat source would be replaced as well. Those older electrolytics were made better. The larger filter caps on the DC amp supply and any of the low voltage power caps would be changed. No reason to change everything unless you want to.

      5500 - I'd start at the power supply. Check for fuses and that sort of thing. The service manual is available online and has a lot of great info.
      8800 - Sounds like an amplifier problem. I'd suggest checking the outputs and the drivers as well as the protection circuit. Both are very nice amps.

    Hi Frank, and thanks for this video. I am trying to troubleshoot one of these units, and my question is the continuity tests you do around the 37min mark. You test the screws for continuity to the chassis, and then the back plate of the transistor, but you call it the collector. Is that plate connected to the collector leg?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. It's connected right to the leg.

    • @jodyj.6110
      @jodyj.6110 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jodyj.6110
      @jodyj.6110 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Collector is middle leg on these NEC transistors. And on PNP, collector/plate goes to ground, so maybe you didn't need to isolate that particular one in the video?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jodyj.6110 They both do it. The only difference is that one connects to the negative supply(PNP) and the other connects to the positive (NPN). The collector sees the most current, therefore the most heat. The surface is insulated from the chassis with heat sync paste and mica or some other insulating sheet between the metal surface of the collector and the heatsink.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jodyj.6110 There is a piece of mica on the metal. th-cam.com/video/NfxaMnUmPk8/w-d-xo.html I put it on here. The screws are insulated from the metal by the front piece of plastic. Occasionally there are amps with the collector directly on the heatsink but it is not common.

      Hi Mike, When it cuts out, will it come right back on, or does it have to sit for a little while? It could be a few things, it's hard to speak specifically due to the many possible causes.

    • @miker5502
      @miker5502 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FixitFrank Thanks for replying! It has to sit for a little while. I usually shut it off and wait a little bit ,then back on again. Round and round we go. Seems as if something is getting hot and cutting out. I know this is impossible for you to diagnose. Just thought there might be a common problem particular to this amp that was known. Appreciate your channel great content.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miker5502 No problem at all! I actually have a suspect area. I'd make sure you don't have a speaker wire that might be touching or more likely the protection circuit is kicking in and turning off power to the output transistors. These have a neat protection circuit without relays. It's not as reliable as a relay activated circuit but its neat. If you get motivated, check for leaking power supply caps. Its possible one or more is heating up and throwing the bias off to the amp transistors which is invoking the protection circuit. The service manual is free to download and has a lot of good info on checking the bias, after replacing the caps(if that's what it is). The other likely cause is a transistor breaking down. That's a little harder to diagnose. It's a great amp. Hello back from Pennsylvania!
