    Ride along with Torquelist as we drive from Pittsburgh to New Jersey, buy a 5 ton military vehicle, then drive it back to Pittsburgh in one.....long day. It has the 8.3 Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine, Allison Transmission and CTIS.
    Be sure to leave some comments on what you think of the 5 ton. Stay tuned for more videos with this behemoth.

    As a former Motor-T Marine (3533) LVS operator, this brings back so many memories. It was being phased out by the newer 7 ton Caterpillar powered Osh Kosh trucks but I was fortunate enough to train on these beasts. It is in very good shape, I love it man.

    Should have stuck with the 6X6, not the bobbed. They were designed as a 6X6 and run better that way. I have a bobbed Deuce M35A2, a bobbed crew cab deuce M35A3 and an M923A2 6X6, I prefer to drive the 900 series any day over the Deuces.

    take all the tires and wheels off and balance them all over then have the Turbo turned up and the fuel injection, you should be able to get 75 out of it instead of 50 but you might only get 4 to 5 mpg then

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you go over 2,200 RPM's,you'll damage that Engine,it's not a V6 or a V8,it's a Straight Six.There's a reason why the Military has Governor Springs on them,and all 5 Ton Trucks alongside the Deuce except for the M35A3 and M109A4 can do 60 MPH all day long,your Tire Size however will affect you.The highest I went to the limit in my 1971 M35A2 was 68 MPH and once in both my 1991 M923A2 and M931A2 I managed 71 MPH with a adjusted Spring,but these trucks are 6×6,they never are meant for highway speeds,63-65 MPH is your recommend limit,and most times you're not required to go over 55-60 MPH because of the Brakes these rigs have.

      Disconnecting the Governor Spring won't do a damn thing.Those Cummins are a Inline Six,there's a reason why they Restrict them in the Military,if you go above 2,200 RPM's,you're going to fuck up your Pistons and Gaskets.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're referring to the Deuce & A Half,the Deuce is nothing compared to the 5 Tons.Low last on Miles and underpowered,the LDT 465 made 330 Torque,both my F-150 and F-250 make 325 Torque,while it has 135 HP.The LDS 465 was 175 HP and 445 Torque,there's a reason why they rebuilt the early 5 Ton Trucks back with Mack Engines after some Variants had Multi-Fuels.The Multi-Fuel itself makes the efficiency of 8-9 MPG,they were worse in the 5 Ton Trucks with 3.2-3.5 MPG.They only last 60,000 Miles and you will have to Rebuild them,they aren't all that great,neither is the truck,they are just like other Medium Trucks,they bend and they break.The Mack Engines and Cummins Engines in the altogether Series of 5 Ton Trucks out there are easy to get Power out of and last many miles as real Diesel Engine should,and the same fuels that a Multi-Fuel uses are the same ones that a Ignition Compression Engine uses,all Oil,except Gasoline,Petrol,and Ethanol because Multi-Fuels have different Pistons,Pumps,and Fuel Injectors that allow them to Combust when mixed with Diesel or Motor Oil at 30% Flammable and 70% Synthetic,you can't burn unmixed Flammables in a Multi-Fuel or you will destroy the Engine just like in any Diesel Truck if you were to do so.
      The 673 Mack in the M39 5 Ton Trucks had 210 HP and 685 Torque and the 250 including the 6CTA Cummins in the M809 and M939 5 Ton Trucks both had 240 HP with 724 Torque,250's had 3-4 MPG and 6CTA's had 7-8 MPG.So yeah,5 Ton Trucks win.And the 5 Ton Trucks except for the M939's use a 5 Speed Manual,just like the Deuce.

    • @Nikkk6969
      @Nikkk6969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      SS 81 I was looking for a deuce and a half. Probably an M35A2 to be exact. Are you saying they only last 60k miles? And that they aren’t reliable? Because if it requires that much upkeep I most likely won’t get one. But idk that’s hard to believe because I also hear how tough these things are.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nikkk6969 And the same people who tell you that they are beasts are the same ones who will complain and whine once the wheels fall off after running them into the ground.The Deuce & A Halfs weren't all that great.Yeah they could still haul and go off-road,but you won't pull much or go very deep.The NDT-900×20 Tires were horrible for off-roading,they were pavement tires.That is why you see many Deuce Owners use different Set Ups like 1100×20 Tires and even from 53/1200×20-49/1400×20 Tires.The Multi-Fuel as I said previous didn't make alot of power,and they never last many miles.The Multi-Fuel was just a Diesel Engine with different Pistons,Pumps,and Injectors as well with a Compensator that allowed it to Combust Gasoline and other Flammables,when it was mixed with Motor Oil or Diesel Fuel.They had a Life Span of 60,000 Miles and then you had to Rebuild them,they were very fragile.I've seen some go as high as 80,000 Miles,and that's with top notch Maintenance that pays out to that end anyways.If you own a M35A2 as a Parade Vehicle or Off-Road Machine,you can still manage,but surely don't rely on them for long distance or pulling heavy shit with the Multi-Fuel they have,you will still drag anything,but you will handle 5 MPH.There is however the M35A3 which has a 3116 Caterpillar with 290 HP,something you can really depend on,the only issue is just the fact that they only Top at 45 MPH because of different Axles,Ratio,and Transmission.The only issue is that the M35A2 goes from 1967-1988 and the M35A3 was from 1993-1999,so they are a little hard to come across.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The M939 5 Ton Trucks have Air Brakes with Air Dryers and Self Bleeding Valves,but you still need to drain the Air Tanks once every two weeks or the Brakes will lock up and stall the Engine.A good amount of these trucks to get converted to ABS.Air-Over Hydraulic Brakes were used in the M39 5 Ton Trucks.

    Nice video, am also curious as to how much was paid as I would like to get one of these some day. I drive an M35 as a firetruck here in Colorado, which is a lot more work than driving this truck since it is much older and manual. Much of the interior including switches is identical. This truck is also much faster than the M35, which is additionally appealing.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Deuce and a 5 Ton both have the same speed range.60-65 MPH.It also depends on what Tire Size you use because of Weight.These trucks can be pushed to 67-70 MPH,but that is unnecessary and extremely deadly to do so,and you just don't want to do it plain simple because these trucks have Straight Sixes,and aren't meant to go over 2,100-2,200 RPM's at all.My Deuce & A Half once got to 68 MPH and my Engine was screaming at 2,600 RPM's,only reason why it got that high is because those Multi-Fuels have different Pistons,Pumps,and Fuel Injectors,they aren't exactly the same as other Ignition Compression Engines.

      We had it up to 65 once or twice, it was a handful at those speeds, perhaps a previous owner removed the governor.

      We're not exactly sure Sour Dough Racing, but a few modifications are definitely in order. We need some 12v power in the cab to run any of the electronics we want. We may also add some 53" tires and a few power modifications.

    I loved the vehicles I drove in the Army, While I had little experience with the 5-Ton I always liked the classic looks of them but if I had my choice I would have an LMTV, Most comfortable to drive truck of it's class and it would have endless utility on the ranch.

    A quick tip for diesel vehicle owners: You should cycle the ignition to the "run" position to allow the glow plugs to warm up before you crank a diesel vehicle like these guys did in the video.

    • @Richieb9280
      @Richieb9280 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure how to do this in a military style vehicle but using compression to heat up the cylinders will only wear the starter more.

    • @markhdg
      @markhdg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not all diesels use glowplugs. Because it is Cummins-equipped, it may have an intake grid heater.

    • @notyourenemy7633
      @notyourenemy7633 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Richieb9280 8.3 Cummins is a grid heater style air intake heater but you still have to turn the key and wait for the grid to heat up instead of the glow plugs.

    THese things seem like a good idea especially for a SHTF scenerio untill you realize how absolutely bad of mileage they get... then if SHTF it'd make a better road block than method of transportation. You'd need a federal budget, in debt just to afford to drive the thing around.

    • @guitaristxcore
      @guitaristxcore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isa C Im pretty sure this is a multifuel vehicle. So in a bad situation you could throw just about anything in the fuel tanks and it'll run.

    • @torquelistmedia
      @torquelistmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      These only run on proper diesel, but they hold ~100 gallons.

    • @IsaChentnik
      @IsaChentnik 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some run on fuel oil or motor oil among other things... but point still stands... draining oil pans to get enough fuel, sure but... What makes you think that in a scenario where gasoline or diesel was scarce motor oil would somehow be abundant?

    • @guitaristxcore
      @guitaristxcore 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isa C Because there would probably be abandoned vehicles all over thr place, and very few would be multifuel capable like some military vehicles.

    When you go from 6 rear tire to 2, it's not really a 5 ton anymore, is it?

    • @torquelistmedia
      @torquelistmedia  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Joe M Probably not, but what else would you call it? Modified M931a2, one axle gone, chopped 923a2 bed installed...it's a mouthful, so we just call it the 5 ton.

    • @TommyboyGTP
      @TommyboyGTP 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those big Michelins, depending on type and size, have a maximum load rating over 11,000 pounds, per tire.

    • @joem1256
      @joem1256 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the truck weighs 10 tons empty in stock form, so will the modded one still carry 5 tons in the bed like the name implies with 2 tires instead of 8? It is a cool looking truck no doubt, but isn't essentially just a overweight deuce and a half with too few tires now?

      @@MrJohnsonx3 I live in Texas and spent six days in Hurricane Harvey with my M923A2.You literally can drive these with just a DL,some of these trucks for a fact have been converted to ABS,because of Brakes locking up and stallling the Engine all because of lack to remember to drain the Air Tanks once every two weeks,even though these trucks have Air Dryers and Self Bleeding Valves.And your stats are way off,a M923 Cargo Truck isn't nowhere near 26,000 lbs,they are 21,550 lbs empty.In Texas,you are allowed to drive a Vehicle that can weigh up to 26,001 lbs,if it's heavier,you are required to have a CDL in most cases.You are allowed with such a Vehicle to even have it up to 33,000 lbs if you use it for hauling something.You have to own it under register as a Private or Antique Vehicle,and it depends on what Year exactly the truck was built.A Deuce & A Half literally has a Air Brake System in them to,for Trailers,and the M35A3 along with the M109A4 have Air Brakes to,and anyone can own them also as a regular Vehicle,even though the Deuce itself empty is a 12,880 lbs Truck.
