Peas a favorite here!! I’m doing a fall crop now. (Zone 9b). So crunchy good, some never even make it into the house. Farm to mouth gardening!! I’m direct sowing all after watching this. Last spring many of my transplants did not grow...can’t have that!
We absolutely love homegrown peas! 😋 Last year I planted them successively late Winter through mid Fall & easily got 4 full crops. After eating them fresh all summer I still had a whole shelf of them in my freezer. Oh, tomato cages work well for supporting bush varieties & would probably work great in pots or grow bags.
Right on, that's how it's done! Not just one crop and they are finished....grow and plant them successively, all season long (weather permitting). Tomato cages.....of course! Brilliant. !
I just planted peas for the first time in containers recently. Only a couple weeks since planting and the plants are already a good 6 inches tall. Can't wait to harvest some fresh peas.

Last time I grew peas, I grew a bush variety. When I first planted the seeds, I did not protect the seeds even though they were planted deep enough. The quail stole all of them; so, I planted more and covered the seeds with double layer of chicken wire slightly raised so that the quail couldn't reach the soil with their beaks. The second planted did grow; but, by then, it had warmed up. I was able to harvest some peas; but, not really enough. When I lived in Oakville, WA, the summers were not nearly as hot as they are over here. I could plant peas; or, anything. If there were quail around, they never bothered my garden. I filled my freezer with lots of peas, beans, squash, and corn.

I’ve done peas for the last 2 years. We had an ok harvest last year. The kids ate them as the popped out. This year though, I just threw a bunch of seeds in different spots. Front yard I have a few in a half wine barrel thing, with flowers in front, just cuz. In back yard I have 4 plants in a tight container. I didn’t think all 4 seeds would sprout. Slow start but holy cow are they taking off!! I use a cheap tomato cage as support and will probably get a second one for on the top. The kids are excited to have more

I grow them from seed in a piece of guttering that's a metre long. I just make a trench and push the whole lot out in one go. It helps avoid transplant shock.

I started some peas in Feb, zone 10A, so it gets really hot. They had a few peas that were awesome but then they turned yellow and died. Not sure what I was doing wrong. Thinking about trying this pea container gardening in a spot that only gets morning Sun so it won't get overly hot. Otherwise I need to wait until it cools off a bit. Thanks for the info.

I just accidentally left a whole packet of sugar sprint bush snap peas outside in the rain. I guess I've got to plant them all now. Was wondering if bush peas need staking or not. I'm in toronto and its very early with maybe lots more frosty nights but I might as well try these seeds out since it would be a total loss if I didnt.

Thanks Clair! Peas grow with almost anything....beans, carrots, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, parsley, peppers. potatoes, radish, spinach, strawberries and turnips. Just no onions and no garlic.
I just planted them a week ago and they are almost a foot tall. I have to plant them outside soon. Is it too soon here in NJ? I’ve been told cold is ok. I bought 5 gallon bags. How many plants per bag should I plant? I hope o got the right organic potting soil and food 🙏

As much or as little as you want. With the tight soil mix, you don't need a fertilizer, trellises can be made for free, and the tiny variety of peas can produce bucket loads of them
I've got some _'Oregon Sugar Pod II'_ seeds this year, and here in NW Oregon the weather is pretty mild. (lows 30's to high 40's forecast over the next month) The Burbee catalog suggests planting them through the end of February, so I'll probably get started in a couple days. *Do you think I should soak them, or let nature decide?*
@@oregonpatriot1570 no problem! Pre soaking can help with summer peas so that they can get established faster when the weather is hot... But not necessary in the spring. :-)
Peas are plants that I try to grow every year and fail... I have tried the transplant and direct sow method. They grow upto a foot tall and gradually wither and die. This spring mine grew tall enough to climb the trellis, but withered in a few days. Not sure why !!

In honor of my Grandma I thought I would grow shelling peas just like she used to. I have never done it before. I'm in zone 3b and I have 3 10 gallon grow bags with peas that I started 2 last month and 1 this month. I'm afraid I was too excited and did all this too soon 😫
I live in 3b as well. I started my peas in-ground on May 2nd and they all succeeded - we had two dozen plants. On the days where it was getting a bit below 0 overnight, I covered in frost cloth and put straw mulch on top. So from personal experience peas can be started in early May and be fine in 3b. Same with leeks, celery, turnips and parsnips (which should be ready very soon!).

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms It must be a watering issue. I haven't fertilized them. I watered really well and got another picking of beans. It's really hard tp keep beds from drying out here in Florida even with mulching and not alot of rain.
Can anyone tell me why my pea plants are losing the bottom leaves? I’m growing in a 5gallon bag, in so cal, not getting a lot of sun right now. The bottom leaves on all of them are turning brown.

There are not enough videos on container gardening, mostly we need the minimum size pot we can grow in for peas, beans, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. The main type of foods grown in a garden. I've seen a lot of container gardening of potatoes in minimum of 5g buckets, but I 'd also like to see more mention of the size of container for growing of the same product being growing. You do a great job of mentioning soil types n amendments. We will disagree on the use of coco coir vs moss. While both are sustainable, I feel the whole processing of the coconut fibers is very labor n environmentally taxing ( using a LOT of water to process ). So we will agree to disagree. Tomato cages are too expensive for me. Instead I cut down invasive saplings in my backyard and tie them together with jute twine.

I tried some transplant with innoculent to help with transplant shock. It didn’t help. Most of them died but the ones I planted from seed are thriving

I don't stake my bush beans, but bush peas always flop over on me, so I do stake those ones.

something at night snaps off the top of my peas, they sometimes pull on it so i see a whole steam on the ground. Any ideas?

Hi Tapoja....Peas aren't really perennial. So they sprout, flower, produce, then you start them all over again. :-)

Hey Shirley, I tend not to fertilize any legumes....but again, every soil is different. Conditions vary, even in the same garden!

Often those peas haven't fully matured to a viable seed yet. Try a couple, but don't get your hopes up. Report back if it works! :-)
