After watching Antonio for so many videos, I’m finally able to see the correct piece to move when I pause the video. May not move it to the right spot yet, but at least it’s the correct piece now.
8:07 I got played here like a fiddle. I felt my heart drop in shame for thinking f5 when the knight started moving to g2, and a wave of relief when the knight suddenly moved the other way to f5. A mild emotional rollercoaster.
The PTV was very difficult today. Took a long time. It's easy enough to fixate your thinking on the rook hitting the h1 square for checkmate, but how do you create the threat? First thought, as usual with these puzzles is look for the queen sac. Capturing the bishop without the queen defending would make it an easy PTV (which Agadmator jokingly misplayed). But the queen is right there. Takes a while, but you'll get it eventually.
"You're under no obligation to be the same person you were five minutes ago" - Alan Watts Dude, mad respect for having an Alan Watts' quotes in your vid! This whole video was definitely a Day Improver :D
@Epic T It was a gift from his partner's dad, IIRC. It's just a tongue-in-cheek bit of flex that first started as just laughing at the novelty of it and his "reaction", but it's a new running joke on the channel. It also fills the time when he does "take a couple seconds/pause the video". And he doesn't do it every time, just maybe once every two or three such "pause the video" moments, so it keeps its running joke status without being tiresome (at least to me).
Just when I thought I couldn't possibly be a bigger fan you go and put the vast wisdom of Alan Watts as today's quote. Fair play sir, and Thank you so much for improving my Tuesday. Definitely going to tell my friends at the bar , and library, immediately!
Many years ago I was recommended Agad's video analysing the position on the life-size board from Harry Potter. It's amazing to see how this channel has changed since then but the quality content remains. Brilliant stuff!
If there is a question of opponent's king safety, you look for forcing moves that make the king vulnerable. Even if you couldn't calculate out how it would play out in your head, Nxh4 becomes a candidate move really early in your search. The other candidate moves are also sacrifices, but your queen and rook are already in a good position and are useful in the checkmate, and it's hard for the knight to force mate by itself. So it's the first one into the breach a lot. Then you check, and sure enough.... first guess was right. Spotting the knight move to create interference and protect the bishop after the queen and knight sacrifice move, that's harder to spot. Two pause the video moments make sense, and in order to play the first move over the board, you'd need to have spotted the second move during that calculation, which makes it hard for us noobs.
I actually did have the idea that after white captures my queen, I retreat my knight, and after Bh4 and Nxh4, I was like "alright, I need one more move wasted moving the knight to threaten mate, so it can't be right". Little did I know, I had solved the hard part and was too lazy to finish till the end with the easy part.
When you said the first capture at the pause the video moment, I was like... but, but, look at how beautiful this other capture is. Then you took it back and played that capture and I had joy all over my face.
King safety problems in the enemy camp means that material matters should be temporarily suspended from your consideration of the available moves. If there are checkmates on the board nothing else matters, not material or long term positional disadvantage.
Spoilers: The knight ending up being the bodyguard of a very important piece, running nothing but interference in doing so, was perhaps even more spectacular than the original sacrifice.
Very good video sir , becuase of you I developed a liking to chess and motivated me to play chess . You even motivated me to start my own chess channel named Dr. Chess . Thank you sir agadmator
There seem to be certain kind of moves that the engine cannot see easily. It's the kind of moves where you sacrifice material which leads to an almost unavoidable checkmate but where the defender has many options of what to play but none of them are good options. Other games that have these sort of postions is the Firouzja Nakamura "immortal blitz game" , the anand Nepo preperation miniature, and the yusupovs immortal game where the engine can't find the best move. There are some more I think but can't remember. The leko one the engine seems to find...
Thank you for another great game. What a great position there near the end. Always nice to see Ruy's where Black actually wins. :-) Also, as always, I love your dog!! God Bless. Happy Easter weekend!
7:36 Very interested to know if white is still lost if he immediately tries to give back Queen for Bishop (Qe2, if Bc6 retreating, Qxg4, then if Nf5 or Ng6, f3 makes breathing room for king) (or alternatively, Qe2, Bxe2, Nxe2, and material is equal no?) *Edit:* Nvm, in second line black has a wonderful forced mate lurking in the position. (Qe2, Bxe2, Nxe2, Nf3 check, Kg2 only move, Rh2 checkmate!)
What about qe3, bishop cannot retreat while still attacking king as it's defended by knight/pawn/forks check after qe4, so nf5 is only move (if you remove pressure then white is just up a queen) so qe3, nf5, qx, gx -> even material
And, in case anyone is wondering, after ... Nxh4; gxN is responded-to by ... Rxh4; if BxR, QxB and mate next move. If BxQ, Rh1++. The dancing of the black N (even if only in the game notes) reminds me a bit of the windmill check.
Interesting that Stockfish, even at 32 moves deep doesn't get the move. It clearly doesn't consider it for its evaluation tree. Make the move where the knight takes, and it evaluates its as very good for black.
I find it very interesting that the engine struggled to find the advantage for black in the Queen sac. Not that I found it, but was quite a forcing line with few options for white and it didn't take anything like 27moves for Vlad to get to a winning position, so why was it so hard for the engine to find?
Why does the computer not see it quickly though? Nxh4 was the first and only move I considered, and I figured it works, there are safe squares for the king and even if the white queen sacs itself for a rook there's another rook to take its place. I thought there would be a very long series of checks from the white queen or something, but that can't have been more than a 15 move sequence with only about 5 useful moves. Was it just incorrect pruning by the engine?
#suggestion @suggestion Although you have done a Nikolic game (Nikolic vs Bertok, 1968 Vinkovci) you do not have Fischer vs Nikolic in the very same tournament. (Fischer won this very strong tournament with 9 wins, 0 losses, and 4 draws.) The Forward to the book "Checkmate: Bobby Fischer's Boys' Life Columns" says about it: "Bobby Fischer's victory over Emil Nikolic at Vinkovci 1968 is one of his most spectacular, perhaps the last great game he played in which he was the bold, go-for-mate sacrificer of his earlier years. But you won't find it in "My Sixty Memorable Games". That book was going to print shortly after the game was played. And unless you have access to his terse notes in Chess Informator Number 6, you probably don't have a clue what was going on in Fischer's mind when he played it. But thousands of chess-playing Boy Scouts knew what he was thinking: Fischer annotated the game in some detail in the February 1969 issue of Boy's Life. And unlike the Informator, Fischer explained his thought process - why he spent a lot of time on move 19, for example." I just got this book and if you would like photos of those 5 pages, I can email them to you. I'd like to see you do your magic on this game.
5:18 What about Qxg5? Down a piece but up a pawn, in a closed position if its classical black will probably win but if its rapid or blitz its anyone's game?
This game reminded me a lot of the one where you played against your bot sacrificing your Queen so your Rook and Knight could deliver Checkmate in that game I believe you did have a little help from one of your Bishops making it impossible for the king to escape this was pretty much the same concept Thanks for the Game Enjoy your day
