Bought X4 two years ago and wanted to get into it a couple of months ago (2024) and decided to wait for Update 7.0 and Timelines. Played a few hours last few days. After the basic tutorials the program recommended that I do Timelines and I did. Have just completed Graph 1 so far. It was good doing some stuff in safety (Still remember the painful memories of losing a ship early on in Elite Dangerous and having to fight back up to where I started). However I found it quite confusing too. The combat tutorial says "L" shoots missiles but in Timelines every battle seemed to be different. I'm sure different weapons were installed on the ships. But for somebody straight out of the tutorials I could not figure things out. I was just spinning and shooting and hoping I would get lucky like Anakin in the Phantom menace.
@@KamramBehzad that's what I suspected would happen to a new player... Thanks for sharing! Yes, the ships you fly in Graph 1 all have different loadouts. You can always save and try out stuff in the open universe mode. In ED losing your ship matters. In X4 you can just load your quick save and that's it. 7.0 is great though and waiting to start with its release is a good idea.
Timelines was a frustrating experience with the dramatic differences in difficulty between missions. It's a real shame too because the underlining plot and previous stories were some of the best in any of the DLCs. Honestly, what I was expecting was a more cohesive retelling of past events in which each graph told a different story. I initially thought each nodus was an aspect of the story leading to the terminus story in which it was nicely wrapped up, but half the nodi had no connection with the terminus story. It's a real shame too because the soundtrack, set pieces, and sky boxes are some of the most diverse and gorgeous we've ever seen in the entire series.
Ooh especially your second paragraph is spot on. I also had hoped for something like that. That's what I would have called "deep dive"... The basic idea was and still is awesome. A shame it doesn't get enough traction to really shine.
I'd rather if they just remade the early games in X4 engine with X4 assets. So same sector layout, same factions, same story, but don't change anything about X4 mechanics and assets, just treat it as a new start with a slightly different universe sandbox layout. Maybe do the same with Terraformer War. What they did instead is more realistic for the price I guess, but still disappointing. I'd pay full price for a remake of Brennan saga in X4 engine.
There are enough missions that all tie into one another they could have added a few more and turned each nodus into its own theme. One for racing, one for mining, one for Brennan/R Gunne -Terran histories-.....and another for the Paranid missions. Actually telling a coherent story through these as each mission would unlock more context as you went. The mining missions feature the same brother/sister duo in each of them for example. But they are disjointed and told separately across each graph. They have all the framework for what could of been a slam dunk of a dlc, but just didn't deliver on it fully.
Literally there are serval books with deep dive aspects also from other races, it was all already there to make it awesome. But at the and, X-players buy it anyway just to support that little team with that unique game.
I brute forced my way through Timelines as a newbie. Can anyone recommend what my first steps should be to take advantage of the mission rewards in the open sandbox? I want that Xperimental Shuttle asap!

I find the mixed review understandable, yet crass. I've enjoyed X4 for several years now and find it to be a wonderful game. Did I like the direction of the Timelines content? No, not really. Yet, the main draw of the game did get the usual feature set. It got new ships for the persistent open universe. And it enabled several new Sectors. While also providing a wealth of new story content and quest content. Where they faltered, was in gating that new open universe behind timelines specific content. Granted it made sense lore wise, and was a logical leap. Yet, it forced the player base into a vastly different way to play the game for those rewards. Rather than providing an intrinsic motivation to the player base to seek out timeline game loops organically. If I want the new sectors and ships, I have no choice but to engage in timelines content. Whether I like it or not. That, was the misstep
I agree about the confusing aspects of the DLC. Even if i search for "new ships in X4 Timelines", i will have no clue in what form they are unlocked. Blueprints? Or will they appear in the universe? Or WHAT? Really weird decisions. Thanks for the informative video. I will still buy the DLC to support the devs, and i like the look of the new ships.

That the price remain the same but you get more content is just not true. Just look at the bundle pricing if it is still on sale. You can see that the price for the main game would have been discounted significantly more without the dlc. You basically "save" like $4 for buying it rather than getting the base game and the dlc. However considering I did not really want the dlc I instead was forced to pay over 10 dollar more than I wanted to if I remember correctly. Yea! See. I am not sure if they fixed it now so you do not NEED to buy them together. Or if its just because I was stupid and bought it so now it lets me just buy the base game if I want to gift it. OP is accurate. I noticed at launch that Egosoft disabled the ability to individually buy the X4 base game from both steam and gog. Thereby forcing new players to buy (at minimum) the Discovery Pack with both X4 and Timelines. By discounting timelines less than the discount on the base game, and requiring players to buy both, all new players (and gifting players) were forced to pay more than had they been allowed to purchase just the base game. Days later, after the poor reception of Timelines, they reenabled base game purchases. Truly baffling behaviour by Egosoft. *Smh.* In my view, the X4 base game is INCREDIBLE value, even at the inflated price, but by (underhandedly) removing player choice to increase unit price by a few dollars, what they achieved was to sour the initial experience of players who might otherwise have enjoyed the game and felt really good about paying that same price.
