This was seriously an excellent video. My wife and i have been doing almost everything you mentioned including the egg shells. I also do the compost tea from my DIY bokashi compost. Here in TX we got sone nasty pests to deal with so we use garlic and onion water (peels n scraps soaked in water overnight) and it's been working wonders. Love your content keep it up!
Thank you so much! I've been trying to improve my videos and it sounds like it's working :-) That sounds like a great use of garlic and onion peels and scraps. I am always cooking with garlic and onions but I am nervous about filling up the worm bins with garlic and onion peels since they don't like them. I will try your soak idea!
Another good, informative video. Some soil amendments you may want to add are bone meal (phosphorus), azomite (trace minerals) and blood meal (nitrogen). I have a fire place and like you I use the wood ash (potash). Your beautiful blue eyes are looking good. Looks like Milton spared you that's great, although your pond looks a little high, I would guess it's probably from excessive rain, due to Milton. The eye passed directly over us, snapped a 40' pine tree off about 15' from the top , had some tree limb debris scattered around the property other than that no structural damage to the house or the shop. I have a whole house generator so power was not a problem. The winds were 105+ mph. I think we were very blessed and lucky. Thanks again for a wonderful video and a terrific attitude.
Glad your Milton experience wasn't too bad! Sad about the pine tree, but glad it wasn't worse than that. We did have some rain, but nowhere near what it was for my parents up in Palm Coast. We got a few inches for sure, but they were on the north side of the storm and were getting like 13 inches! I use bone meal and blood meal sometimes too but haven't tried azomite. Good idea!
Perfect timing for this video! It's frost time the next couple of nights so I'm closing down the gardens and since this is my first year with raised beds, I completely forgot about amending! I will definitely be using your tips this week as I get ready for next year!
@SpaceCoastHarvest 😅 Kentucky weather! It'll be 80 again in no time before we frost again lol that's the Ohio valley for ya! If I wasn't grounded in Louisville for my daughter, I'd be in Melbourne growing mango trees with ya! 😂
Thanks for the tip on eggshells! It seems so obvious to save them separately and grind them down. I’ve put them in my compost for years and it seems to take years for them to breakdown. Appreciate the direct method of your videos and how you pass on your growing gardening knowledge 😊
I'm glad you liked the video, Kristen! I just learned about another way of speeding up the eggshell process by making a blend of vinegar and crushed eggshells for a soil drenching solution. I may try that too since it seems like the plants need quite a bit of calcium
@@SpaceCoastHarvest No flooding. The surge was less than Helene so only a little trash in the back yard. We didn't sustain much damage to the house itself other than a few tiles off the roof. We did lose the entire pool cage and about 60 feet of our dock. All we really lost were amenities. We still have a house. We spent that night over in Boca. The power even went out over there a couple of times. And how about all those tornadoes?! Did you guys make out ok?
It was Simply Organic Lawn & Garden Center right on Sarno Rd. I bought it in bulk (1 cubic yard for $25). I had them drop it in the bed of my husband's pick up truck. They also sell by the bag, although I'm not sure how big the bags are. It's $1.89/bag. There were some sticks and a little bit of debris like landscape fabric, but overall I thought the quality was great!
@@SpaceCoastHarvest Wow, thanks. That sounds like a really good deal and it's great to avoid the plastic bags if possible. Thanks for sharing your source. It looks like it's near the landfill where I get my mulch.
I used to put the eggshells into a blender but found that a food processor gave me a finer powder. Also picked up a food processer at a garage sale after the DW questioned me about using "her's" .
Sure, I got it from Simply Organic Lawn & Garden Center on Sarno Road in Melbourne. I bought 1 cubic yard in bulk for $25 and it filled up the entire truck bed of my husband's F-150. It was a realllllly heavy load for the truck. I got it like a day after heavy rain, so it was even heavier! They also sell it by the bag for $1.89, although I'm not sure how big the bags are.
@SpaceCoastHarvest thanks. I got it at Amerigrow Recycling in Boynton Beach for my SoFlo home. Just didn't want to drive it 3 hours to the ranch if I could avoid it. And yes, having a max tow F150 (heavy duty suspension) certainly helped! Thanks
I agree. I know if something goes wrong, I'll have a really difficult time figuring out where the problem came from. Making my own fertilizers and soil amendments is certainly a great growth opportunity

How was it for you? I hope you didn't get flooded!

Hey. Melbourne friend here. Thanks for the important information. May I ask where you purchased organic compost so cheap in town?

Good to know! Funny story about your DW. At least now you have a food processor and you don't have to worry about what you stick in it!
coffee grins !
Good one! I do drink a lot of coffee
The best way to use the eggshells is to grind them, scoop the egg powder with a spoon of vinegar, and mix it with water. Let it fizz and then use.
Interesting, I haven't heard that before. What does the vinegar do to the egg shells? Maybe it helps break it down faster?
@@SpaceCoastHarvestcorrect, garden like a viking has a good video of.
I just watched that video and it was great! I'm going to try doing that, thanks for the rec!
My city, Oceanside, zone 10b, has free compost and mulch! I just drive and fill up my trunk.
That’s amazing! You are lucky 🍀
Can you clarify is wood ash from Wood, or charcoal briquettes?
It’s wood charcoal.. here is a link to what I use amzn.to/48cYp1p
Can you tell us where you got the compost? I have property about an hour away and am looking as my regular source is too far away.
