Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge (to be known outside of Japan as Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge) is an augmented reality dark ride that serves as the anchor attraction of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.
The ride is the anchor attraction for Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World area. The ride's exterior and queue are modeled after Bowser's Castle. The ride's loose plot involves "Team Bowser" (Bowser, Bowser Jr., and the Kooplalings) challenging "Team Mario" (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi) to the "Universal Cup."
In the ride, four-person vehicles (modeled after "karts" from Mario Kart 8) follow a railtrack around a course. Guests wear augmented reality headsets to view the Mario characters racing alongside them. Guests rotate their AR-wearing heads around to aim their Koopa Shell ammo, and click a button on their steering wheel to fire the shells at characters within the augmented reality. Guests accumulate points during the ride by successfully hitting the "Team Bowser" characters with their shells. At the end of the ride, point tallies are shown, similarly to Toy Story Mania.
The ride takes guests through a variety of locations from Mario Kart 8, including: Royal Raceway, Mario Circuit (GBA), Piranha Plant Slide, Dolphin Shoals, Twisted Mansion, Cloudtop Cruise, Grumble Volcano, and Rainbow Road.

Yes, you can go play without it. But its recommended to have one as there are many mini game interactions around the area with the power up bands.
