As a blue crabber here along the coastline of New England and has caught hundreds of blue crabs from my kayak I can tell you those crabs don’t let go when they grab onto you. I use chicken wings tying the string at the mid joint and make a knot about a foot up the string from the chicken wing then another one a foot above that knot. The reason for that is when you see the first knot you know the crab is two feet from that knot. The crabs are smart and faster then you think. Always crab on an incoming tide which seems the best time to crab and I get good results. Thanks for the video

We had something called the Newfoundland cod trap and it was about the size of a house underwater for catching cod. It had doorways you pulled up and a leader (vertical net) attached to land to lead the fish into the trap. A few years later, a Japanese fellow (I assume) improved on this by adding a cover on the top and a funnel, probably about 3X3 feet in width/height which kept the fish swimming around in the trap (they could always get out when the two doorways to either side of the "leader" were down. Fish just went around and around and never found their way out of that small opening. That was the pinnacle of technology for the Newfoundland inshore fishermen.

Interesting that the cage fensing has such large square holes. Obviously a crab that was too small could easily exit, but the shells of harvestable crabs are too big to squeeze thru, even diagonally. Great design.
I went to school at the Marine Institute and they had a full motion deck simulator AND a tidal wave tank where they tested cod trap and net designs. They also tested drag bags which trawlers and draggers towed behind them. Because the catch started to contain juvenile cod and many older spawning cod, and the stocks were dwindling, the people at the Marine institute built a funnel chute with a "ramp system" to allow only certain sizes to get caught in the bag itself. In the back of the bag, the size of the mesh there allowed juveniles to escape. In the case of the cod trap, it was determined what mesh size to use in the back of the trap to allow juvenile fish to escape, as well. So you'd only catch certain size fish in either case. It was all by design. :)
I kept waiting for the crabs to team up with one holding the trap open while the others escaped. That would have been something! Also interesting that it was obvious that even the simple minded crab knew it was trapped and was trying to escape....I almost felt bad for them....but then I thought of melted butter and well....

In the Philippines, we call that crab mentality. If you put them in a bucket, not one will escape because all the others will pull down that one whose reaching to the top. It's a sad attitide. We'd rather all wallow at the bottom than for one to succeed. I hope there's still hope.
I live in the Midwest. My first time deep water fishing was 10 years ago. I've seen the crab boats/ shows and had a few buddies that worked them. This is a great video. A different point if view that I really enjoyed. Thanks much.
This is soooo cool! I spent 15 years living aboard in the pacific northwest and youre making me homesick...lol. Just a tidbit: wrap some bacon in paper towels, microwave until crisp. Put the grease soaked paper towels in the pot for bait. Munch the bacon as you motor out to your favorite crabbing spot...everyone's happy!
I have had the experience of pulling up my crab ring in Yaquina Bay in 2012 or so, and instead of crabs, I found myself with two Cabezon now on the pier 😂. Trust me, they're some of the most slippery, muscley fish you will ever attempt to wrangle back into the water. Super feisty, covered is razor sharp spines with toxins, sharp teeth and as I noted they're super strong. Just pure balls of muscle. Was extremely fun to catch them like that however, and everyone on the pier got a HUGE kick out of seeing it, and more so with my struggle to get them back into the water 😆. Even a ODFW officer wound up being present for the show and enjoyed himself too. One of my most unique and fun memories to date!

Clearly, the crabs show some intelligence and problem solving ability, just not enough to realize that the entrances are one way doors. After a while, and seeing some trying to escape, I start feeling bad for them .... I'm thinking nooooo... don't go in, it's a trap!!

@@Og-Judy I don't know what the minimum dimension is, but crabbers have to measure the width of the shell. Too small and it goes back to grow and reproduce some more.
@@Og-Judy If those are dungies then you measure across the back of the shell at its widest point. My memory isn’t perfect but I believe in Washington state they need to be 6.25” or bigger to keep.

Well, you could... if you waterproofed a battery and a transmitter, ran a cable along the line, and put an antenna on the bouy. But the range would be so short you'd have to keep the boat within a few dozen feet of the bouy to get a good signal. And the battery wouldn't last long.
When I was a kid we would go to the Chesapeake Bay. If you tied chicken bones to a rope and pulled it in the next morning there would be Blue Crabs holding the bones. They don’t let go when you pull the rope out.
We'd do that from shore. Chicken leg with string, throw it out. Check every 15-20 min. Slowly pull in. Then slip a net on the end of a pole behind them. Catch dinner easily in an hour.

Probably a silly question. Are the crabs attracted by the smell? When you think of smells out of water, they are in the air. Thus, a exhaust fan in a bathroom is sucking odor saturated air out to carry the smell away. This is fascinating. I knew sharks could detect blood in water from far away. I guess I never considered crabs having a sense of smell under water too. Even the noises and sounds under water are creepy yet fascinating too. Thankyou. This is really interesting. Surprised I haven't seen more footage and sound like this before now.

When the 1st crab entered you can see its mouth moving in crabs is by tasting the water, chicken release oil, and the crabs continuously is tasting following that scent.
Yes, they taste/smell what is in the water. For a really quick-filled pot, let the chicken leg set out in the sun in a sip lock bag for a say and they will massively go crazy to cram in there to eat some rotting flesh.

You can almost tell when one realizes they are trapped and then they surprise me when they figure out how to escape to freedom. Much more entertaining and interesting than expected.
Read the crab rules for MD. Great ideal that all crab traps must have some sort of device to allow turtles to escape instead of dying. I crab in very shallow water behind my motel and can see the traps. A few years ago caught a nice size turtle and quickly returned him back in water.
I always hang bait from the top of a hard crap pot,often I'll extras on top that didn't find their way to the pot eating bait from the top outside of the pot.Bait box in the bottom and a couple herring or chicken wings from the top close to the top
You should always start with two live crabs in the cage. All of that grinding and twisting on the cages from the claws is a unique sound. It seems to also help besides just the meat. The water may flow in one direction, so the scent might not reach many crabs. As opposed to grinding and twisting from the claw. I am not a crabber. I used to when I was a child and used a chicken leg on a string in brackish waters. With a net, I would collect them after I pulled them slowly in. I also had a 7ft. casting net and I would catch crab in those as well. Also stingray and sometimes flounder.

I love those crabs I film as well what I found works great is 2-3' 3\4" PVC pipe. I attach it to the side sticking straight up and put my camera at the end of the pipe and angle it down. It really works great cause you are looking down seeing the whole trap from above and you don't get that stubborn crab that sits in front of camera lol.

One would think, over time, the crabs would get smart and learn not to crawl in the pot. Poor crabs....they really look like they are trying to get out!! Great video!!

Well, you could... if you waterproofed a battery and a transmitter, ran a cable along the line, and put an antenna on the bouy. But the range would be so short you'd have to keep the boat within a few dozen feet of the bouy to get a good signal. And the battery wouldn't last long.

When I was a kid we would go to the Chesapeake Bay. If you tied chicken bones to a rope and pulled it in the next morning there would be Blue Crabs holding the bones. They don’t let go when you pull the rope out.
We'd do that from shore. Chicken leg with string, throw it out. Check every 15-20 min. Slowly pull in. Then slip a net on the end of a pole behind them. Catch dinner easily in an hour.

Probably a silly question. Are the crabs attracted by the smell? When you think of smells out of water, they are in the air. Thus, a exhaust fan in a bathroom is sucking odor saturated air out to carry the smell away. This is fascinating. I knew sharks could detect blood in water from far away. I guess I never considered crabs having a sense of smell under water too. Even the noises and sounds under water are creepy yet fascinating too. Thankyou. This is really interesting. Surprised I haven't seen more footage and sound like this before now.
Nearly all sea creatures use scent to detect prey, at night and during reduced visibility. This IS a creepy and fascinating video! Thanks for your question.
When the 1st crab entered you can see its mouth moving in crabs is by tasting the water, chicken release oil, and the crabs continuously is tasting following that scent.
Yes, they taste/smell what is in the water. For a really quick-filled pot, let the chicken leg set out in the sun in a sip lock bag for a say and they will massively go crazy to cram in there to eat some rotting flesh.
This could just be my crazy logic but if water is thicker than air surely smells would travel further and be stronger

At 75 Feet under water and your telling me that Loud Motor soundbthat I literally had to turn down the volume on my phone because it was getting Wayyyyy to loud was just a Boat's Motor!!??? I kept expecting to see some underwater submersible to come into view! Buddy I'm not sure exactly which GoPro Camera you were using to film this but Good Googly Moogly you should Sooooo contact them and sell them this footage for them to use in a Commercial! Because that is absolutely without a doubt the Best Sound reception from a Camera/Vid-Recorder that I have EVER heard!! And Footage has Everything! Unbelievable Sound Quality, Clear imaging, well as clear as you can get that deep in merky water, and extremely Rugged to take the jar it took hitting the ocean floor and then the continuous Hits from Very Good sized Fish and the smack's from Hard Crab shell's repeatedly as Pod starts getting filled, and the MackDaddy-iest (lol) Feature of all it's accomplishing ALL of This while being submerged 75 Feet underwater!! How many were in there in total? I approximate about 8. The 2 lingering outside at the end, I was hoping would get in by the end!

You can almost tell when one realizes they are trapped and then they surprise me when they figure out how to escape to freedom. Much more entertaining and interesting than expected.

Read the crab rules for MD. Great ideal that all crab traps must have some sort of device to allow turtles to escape instead of dying. I crab in very shallow water behind my motel and can see the traps. A few years ago caught a nice size turtle and quickly returned him back in water.

I always hang bait from the top of a hard crap pot,often I'll extras on top that didn't find their way to the pot eating bait from the top outside of the pot.Bait box in the bottom and a couple herring or chicken wings from the top close to the top
You should always start with two
live crabs in the cage. All of that
grinding and twisting on the cages
from the claws is a unique sound.
It seems to also help besides just
the meat. The water may flow in
one direction, so the scent might
not reach many crabs. As opposed
to grinding and twisting from the
claw.
I am not a crabber. I used to when
I was a child and used a chicken leg
on a string in brackish waters. With
a net, I would collect them after I
pulled them slowly in.
I also had a 7ft. casting net and I
would catch crab in those as well.
Also stingray and sometimes flounder.
I also did this long time ago, so much fun and a tasty reward…

I love those crabs I film as well what I found works great is 2-3' 3\4" PVC pipe. I attach it to the side sticking straight up and put my camera at the end of the pipe and angle it down. It really works great cause you are looking down seeing the whole trap from above and you don't get that stubborn crab that sits in front of camera lol.
