Nicely done Jacob. I have the original Apogee Duet which I am going to try to use w Reaper and EZmix pre-sets. A bit new to the game, but what you discussed here was clear enough that I gained a lot better understanding of Duet and how it interfaces with a DAW.

So Apogee have finally gotten their act together with their Duet 3, thats good! However I still don’t like that silly ‘break-out’ cable, and I still think its too expensive! Looks VERY nice though!!

What kills it for me is Apogee is using the core audio drivers for Mac now. Loved the sound but performance and stability is nowhere near as solid as RME in my experience.
As of July 2023, I have problems with it, it has connectivity issues with my Mac, it makes it restart, it freezes my computer, I haven't been able to use it as I would like. It also crashes once I change any audio setting. The output on my headset doesn't work, the input freezes and works poorly. Do you have any recommendation for a full new install?
I'm looking for an audio interface that would have the best sound quality on speakers and headphones My current options are Audient iD14, Antelope Zen Go and the Apogee Duet 3 (and if you have other options I would love to hear) What are the differences you heard with the speakers output and the headphones output, and how noticeable were they? I'm really curious about what did you manage to hear more on the Apogee that you couldn't hear on the other 2, if it's more details, better clarity, soundstage, what songs also did you listen to compare? And last question, is it worth double the price of the Audient or the Antelope?
What about the need to use software to control such things as, eg, phantom power? It's can really be a deal-breaker that should really be included in a 9-months later review
Hi Jacob. Thanks for the video....I just bought duet 3 today and when I shift input from instrument to microphone....or microphone to instrument I hear a clicking sound from the hardware. I don't know if it should be there or not. ....?????? Please tell me whats that.
Bought the Duet 3 with the dock... tough first day or two in terms of stability... but it seems like we've gotten the bugs out. The sound is professional. I've owned the Duet, Duet 2, and now the Duet 3. I don't see anything that rivals Apogee in the price range. Maybe Universal Audio Apollo Solo would.
Conversion is very subjective, but I have tested both and would say Apogee is far cleaner. Benefit on the Solo is one box for all I/Os as well as the unison pres.
@@scott-richardsonI’ve noticed the duet 3 to be “bigger and wider” sounding over the duet 2 but not much though, the preamps on the duet have more “juice” and mojo but with a little bit of brittle sibilance to them though ( deesser really fixes that ) while the 3 I found the preamps to be boring and bright ….. to me not worth the price specially if you have the duet 2 , honestly what I did was returned the duet 3 and I grabbed an Art Trans-X preamp for $500 , has 2 pres on it, it rivals preamps in the $1000’s it’s quite good and much better then the duet 3 and 2 preamps
Thank you for this! From my understand when you mention you get higher quality when it is plugged into wall vs plugged into Mac directly? Is the correct? For example if I plug duet 3 directly into Mac it will work but the audio quality will not be a good as plugging into wall? Thank you for your help

I was thinking of getting one just to go from my Arturia 8 pre into this and then back in to the Arturia, to take advantage of da/ad conversion, but I'm not sure if it is worth it.

My apogee duet 3 is having problems with the purple led. they are slowly fading. In the beginning they were more intense, but after 1 year they started to fade. Has anyone ever experienced this?
Hi Jacob! Thanx for your video. I remember when my computer gets to sleep, which cuts off the USB power to my Apogee Duet (2nd gen), it sends an almighty popping noise to the monitors. Repeat on wake-up. Is it the same for Duet 3? Did they solved the problem? Thanks.
I don't have this interface anymore but I'm almost positive it will do the same thing. If you're set on it just buy it from a dealer that accepts returns.

Same question about the effects DSP, it it only ECS channel strip for the duet or do other effects can be used ? One more question on Mac logic integration: can you control the preamp gain phase etc. from within logic ? Cheers
Apogee Alloy Preamp Emulation is a feature that is unique to Symphony Desktop. Duet 3 can use ECS Channel Strip on its DSP. Symphony Desktop allows you to control every aspect of its inputs (Gain, Phantom Power, Phase, Soft Limit, plugin, direct mixer level, etc.) using the Apogee Channel FX (plugin) in any DAW.
Another great video. I was just curious If you might be doing a video with latency numbers on this? You’re one of the few people that goes in depth with the rtl on all your interface reviews which for me is important since i use guitar amp sims and virtual instruments and the latency really matters. Also does this operate under usb 2.0 protocol or will it only work with 3.0
The latency numbers maybe a little different depending on the OS (Windows vs Mac) you are using, but you should be able to run amp sims and virtual instruments at a reasonable buffer settings withouth suffering from latency. For any one in the comments using a Duet 3 now or in the past, I want to hear your experience if are/were using a 2018 Mac mini with 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i3 and 16GB RAM or similar Specs. Trying to gauge everyone's experience before I buy one. I know Duet 3 could be end of life but I have no plans to sell my 2018 Mac mini anytime soon and want to stay with an apogee interface b/c my whole ecosystem is Apple including iPhone, and iPad Pro. The reason I want to stay with Apogee is b/c they are usually ready day one with updates for any new Apple updates. I currently have the jam+ but want a better interface and don't want to spend anymore than the cost of a used Duet 3.
Got my duet 3 and had it connected to my PC. The device itself is a fair deal, but man the duet dock is literally cheap plastic like really cheap that kind of plastic. Sometimes I do experience weird noises in the system but I was able to fix them most of the time by unplugging and plugging the device back on. Would be a no-brainer if they would fix such audio issues.

Hey Jacob. I needed a smaller setup for my laptop and went with the Audient ID14 MKII. Is there really a great difference between it and the apogee? I currently have an Ensemble thunderbolt as well for my larger setup and I did notice the sound difference.
I have a sound through problem with my Duet 3 on my M1 MacBook Pro. It will only recognise it as a Generic USB Device, where as on my Intel MacBook Pro, it works perfectly and recognises it correctly as a Apogee Electronics Corp Duet 3.

Hi jacob.. I love the video and most importantly your honesty.. I've also seen your zen go/q videos as well and quite frankly I'm in a delima... I regard your insights because of your honesty and so I need your help...I want to get an audio interface to produce professional radio ready songs, and I've been contemplating between zen go/q and duet 3 ...in your opinion ,which one would most likely achieve my aim with..putting mic pres, coverters, and headphone amps into consideration.. which one do you suggest?
So Antelope was awesome initially but began to develop weird issues over time, software bugs and strange hisses, I'd stay away, the Duet would be the better choice as long as it works for you flawlessly, I'd also suggest looking at the Motu Ultralite Mk5 in the price range

I've heard so much about the zen go/q software isuues that's why I wanted to hear your opinion on them... it was also through your video I found out about motu ultralite mk5 but I don't know why I'm not drawn to it.. it's just a feeling but maybe I'm skeptical on it's mic pres and converters compared to a duet 3 or the zens.. I think one of the issue for me is, it's difficult to find videos of people producing radio ready songs with the audio interface(s) which will encourage my purchasing decision... I once considered audient 1d14 mkii but I realized it's converters suck compared to the zens.. quite frankly I'm surprised you use the audient 1d14 mkii now.. if my memory serves me right, you once had ,reviewed and said motu ultralite mk5 is just perfect for you...
I chose the id14 simply for it's physical knobs and being able to control my monitors with buttons instead of software. It was a downgrade but I don't need absolute top quality to do TH-cam. That said I'm now down to one pair of monitors so it'll probably get replaced at some point on the future.

Hey i asked apogee directly about latency in FL studio but they weren’t bothered to test the duet 3 for me @ 512 samples 44.1 khz are u able to test it ?
I bought one and could not get it to work. Sweetwater spent hours working with me and ultimately had to exchange the unit. They were great. New unit came to me just before the update for the software- works most of the time. Was disappointed as I was expecting a more premium experience. Sweetwater saved their butt!

bought one when they came out. amazing sound, but the unit broke within the first month. Thomann replaced it. Then the second one broke and they replaced that one. Now on the third and guess what?! it BROKE! Hands down this is the most unreliable interface iv ever owned. Such a shame because it does sound great.

Loving your videos , thanks a lot . Had my eyes on this interface , and finally pulled the trigger . Ohh man , biggest disappointment ever , in fact , my apogee duet 3 is outperformed by my 10 year old cheap presonus audiobox ione , $69. on the instrument input my electric guitar is clipping the input even with gain set to zero . took me 7 times to register and update the firmware before I could use it . support chat just closed midways in helping me . I can´t record any guitar part with this thing as it is clipping . Sound quality is not even better than the above mentioned presonus interface if it is it is only by a hair . Really sorry to say that for me it is worthless , and have already been to big of a hassle to just get it up and running and when its working I can´t use it . REALLY wanted to like it , as I like the design and have almost only heard good things of Apogee , both sound quality wise and stability. I WILL RETURN THIS UNIT , FOR ME IT IS NOT WORTH THE PRICE. First experience with Apogee and sorry to say it is gonna be my last . FYI. Apogee duet 3 on macbook M1 chip
Apogees are great cards, to bad their driver department is poorly managed. Duet 3 from Duet 2 is getting off from a horse and getting on a Donkey. That channel strip deal is a hook. And the unit itself is faulty, no studio grade card has mini headphone jack, sorry. Their biggest nemesis RME Babyface has redesigned the whole chassis while Duet is bragging abour that purple light and gorilla glass. This is not a phone you know. And where did the LED screen and Midi port go? All I am saying, no need to change from Duet 2 for Mac and PC, if I do, I will look some other brand. Cheers to Mr.Dark.

I like mine, for its form factor, but the DSP is weak and almost useless. Im going to Apollo, as we use ours in a live set up.

Can you speak on the sound quality difference between the Duet 2 (which I have) and the Duet 3? I am running a pair of Genelec 8030A monitors.

According to a producer in china, he says that duet works better on mac, also ok on pc, but is having trouble on laptops.

Sweetwater is definitely reliable, I agree with any device at any price point, at the very least we expect things to run as they should

@@JacobDarkOfficiali have the ID24 , definitely sounds better then the ID4 MKII and ID14 MKII but im curious as to which has better preamps between the duet 3 and the ID24

bought one when they came out. amazing sound, but the unit broke within the first month. Thomann replaced it. Then the second one broke and they replaced that one. Now on the third and guess what?! it BROKE! Hands down this is the most unreliable interface iv ever owned. Such a shame because it does sound great.
Which part kept breaking?
The high pitched voice during the screen capture parts is grating

(Duet 3) My ears would choose the Duet 3 but it's been quite a while since I've heard the BLA so my memory may be biased. Either way, bonus points if you use my link 😁

Loving your videos , thanks a lot . Had my eyes on this interface , and finally pulled the trigger . Ohh man , biggest disappointment ever , in fact , my apogee duet 3 is outperformed by my 10 year old cheap presonus audiobox ione , $69. on the instrument input my electric guitar is clipping the input even with gain set to zero . took me 7 times to register and update the firmware before I could use it . support chat just closed midways in helping me . I can´t record any guitar part with this thing as it is clipping . Sound quality is not even better than the above mentioned presonus interface if it is it is only by a hair . Really sorry to say that for me it is worthless , and have already been to big of a hassle to just get it up and running and when its working I can´t use it . REALLY wanted to like it , as I like the design and have almost only heard good things of Apogee , both sound quality wise and stability.
I WILL RETURN THIS UNIT , FOR ME IT IS NOT WORTH THE PRICE. First experience with Apogee and sorry to say it is gonna be my last .

I dont think this upgrde worth it from duet 2 tbh but it does look slick
Apogees are great cards, to bad their driver department is poorly managed. Duet 3 from Duet 2 is getting off from a horse and getting on a Donkey. That channel strip deal is a hook. And the unit itself is faulty, no studio grade card has mini headphone jack, sorry. Their biggest nemesis RME Babyface has redesigned the whole chassis while Duet is bragging abour that purple light and gorilla glass. This is not a phone you know. And where did the LED screen and Midi port go? All I am saying, no need to change from Duet 2 for Mac and PC, if I do, I will look some other brand. Cheers to Mr.Dark.
