  • John from www.growingyour... shares with you his latest research on coconut coir to learn if it is deficient in certain nutrients and may be "out of balance" for using in your garden. In this episode John will share with you what he is adding to the coconut coir to make it better balanced.

    I have been using coconut coir to make soilless potting mix go further.
    I am using Earthboxes and it works out well.

    I did add several pounds of rock dust to each bed. It was in the shot behind my head.. didnt get the chance to mention it.. Glad you (and others) for pointing it out.. as awareness of rock dust is building..

    2011!!! what ever became of those beds?? you never shot the follow up at harvest time? forgot to upload it? lost it all to a frost? i always appreciate your efforts, but experiments need results!! perhaps release your videos after harvest time, so you get, and can give us, a chance to see the results. thanks for your work. don't forget to have fun with effective shooting techniques too!! you're not just a gardener now, you're a videographer too!!

    Thanks for the video, John. Could you tell or show us the results, though? Which bed produced better and healthier plants? Did you add any organic fertilizers while the plants were growing? In the one comment 4 months ago you mentioned adding rock dust. Was that at the same time you put together the soil mixes or did you add it afterward?
    Thanks very much for all of your informative videos. Much appreciated.

    Do you like vermiculite over pearlite? And what's the purpose of the vermiculite since the coco coir also helps hold moisture.

    • @chrisdittmer5502
      @chrisdittmer5502 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coir is 10X better than peat moss. Peat moss is also slighly acidic and used best for acidic plants. Use proper nutriets and you will also have oversized veggie garden, like I do.

    • @chrisdittmer5502
      @chrisdittmer5502 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vermiculite retains nutrients, doesnt not float, and aids in drainage. Perlite floats, does not retain nutrients, and aids in drainage.
      Vermiculite is always better and preferred over perlite.

    • @gillenzfluff8380
      @gillenzfluff8380 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perlite is technically the same as coco so there is no point adding it to coco for drainage, I make charcoal in my wood gas stove while cooking and use that instead of perlite.

    • @timpage5021
      @timpage5021 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gillenzfluff8380 you're trippin. Perlite is heated glass. It's added to growing mediums like coco soil and peat to aid in lightning up the mix and adding drainage.

    Most county Extension Agencies will do a complete analysis for around $6. When you consider how expensive things are today, that could save you a LOT of money in wasted, unneeded fertilizers, or replacing plants that didn't get what they needed. I feel it's one of the smartest $6 someone could spend if they're serious about their garden whether it be raised bed or traditional.
    I now relinquish my soapbox. :)

      There is a video by an Indian gardener, where he specifically says it's best to really rinse Coco coir before using for plants. He put it in a large tub /pail and used a LOT of water, then just scoped it out by hand, squeezing the water out into another container.
      He then recommended to let it air dry in the sun in (in a tray or on a tarp) before using it or mixing it with soil.

    Thanks for the video on coco coir. I just started using coir in my D.W.C. and dry gardening so I wanted to see what the chemical makeup of the coir is. I'm going to see if Botanicare will send me an analysis of their coir I bought from them last week. Great idea!

    • @bengtal
      @bengtal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't even think of coir chemically (as long as it's not laden with salts, which most coir products these days are not). Think of it as the guiding structure of your mix... it is great architecture, but nutritionally or chemically inert basically... Any chemical characteristics will be overwhelmed by whatever other compost and/or organic nutrient powders you mix in... It is AWESOME structurally though, so use a high ratio of coir for your mix, then whatever composts you have and/or like, and granular/powdered organics ;-)

    This video needs a follow up. Or did I miss that one? How did the the products compare? I don't think the salt is a big problem. If anything, the micronutrients in salt from seawater outweighs the bad part of salt. Some of the best tasting tomatoes contain sodium. I would have added some iron chelate as well.

    John, I love you and your videos. AND... I LOVE coconut coir... I use it for ALL of my mixtures, for any scale of landscaping ground-soil mixtures, to the smallest of potting/container mixtures. Coir quality varies, but it is the best structural, microporous fiber that we have available, that I know of... FUCK PEAT MOSS. 💖 I haven't actually watched this video yet, but I sincerely hope you are about to rep coconut coir 100% ✊💦 grow dem greens brother!

  • @nicholasmckenzie6957
    @nicholasmckenzie6957 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Coco coir doesn't hold onto much very well. After reconstituting it, a wash with twice its volume worth of RO or DI water should wash out any calcium (the big one coco hangs on to) or sodium chloride remaining. Some companies get their coco husks from the beach even but wherever they come from, they're likely to have some salt and a simple rinse will fix it. Coco doesn't hold on to things like soil does. Coco is technically a hydroponic growing medium.

    • @gillenzfluff8380
      @gillenzfluff8380 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When they make coco they buffer it so it's ready to use washing the buffer out will cause problems.

    Nice informative videos as always! I bought a 35 L Seed Raising Mix Coir Block made by Brunnings. It says it has a slow release fetrilizer. Would this alone be enough to grow Veggies without adding anything else aside from fertilizer? Thanks in advance!

    • @bengtal
      @bengtal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure about that product per se, but if it is mostly coir with just "fertilizer powders" mixed in... it may be lacking in active compost ecology to "light the microbial fire" so to speak, so I would add some kind of compost, even just a little.

    for the past two seasons I've used the cocunut coir as my seed starting medium, and I've wondered if this is a good idea or not. I've had decent results--not major catastrophes--but i've never tested it for balance. What do you think about using straight coir for seed starting?

    • @bengtal
      @bengtal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      straight coir is great structurally, but it is basically an inert fiber, so there won't be much microbial ecology going, or nutrients for your situation. Its just the architecture. For starting seeds, I mix a high percentage coconut coir, like mostly coir, plus a little bit of compost (and coarse sand for structure and minerals if you have) and any powdered/granular organics you may have (I like crab meal, kelp meal, neem, etc...). Ideally for seed-starting, just use worm castings as the "compost" ingredient in your mix, as it is like probiotic baby-food for plants, and less likely to harbor things pathogenic to the seeds ;-)

  • @migreenmeds8614

    FYI Canadian Sphagnum is pronounced exactly like is is spelled and coco coir is pronounced "coiyer" not core. When were you going to answer the question of "imbalanced???" what are you meaning about imbalanced? What was the purpose of Epsom salts? why are your comparison tests so different from each other? if you're going to test Sphagnum vs coco coir why don't you test them equally without adding so many variables to one but not the other. This is not a test at all. just a rambling video on having fun without learning anything from the video. Let's raise the bar. So little was learned about coco coir.
