    Very brief history of the Philippines. The vast majority of the population were of Malay descent and came from the Southeast Asian mainland as well as from what is now Indonesia. Colonized by Spain in the 16th century and named for King Philip II, which is why Catholicism is the primary religion, and many people have Spanish surnames. Became a US Territory in 1898 after the US defeated Spain in the Spanish-American war, which is why English is widely spoken. Scene of intense battles during WWII when Japan invaded the islands and forced US General Douglas MacArthur and US troops to retreat. Many US soldiers and Philippine soldiers and civilians died in fierce battles with the Japanese. US granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946. The US maintained large military air bases and naval bases in the Philippines until 1992, when they were asked to leave mainly because Philippino’s felt that having so many US military personnel stationed there created an undesirable "night-life" scene (sort of like Pattaya today) and it is a Catholic country. Just in the last few years the US has been allowed to establish some smaller military bases there as the threat to the Philippines from China is increasing, due to territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea.

      Lol, have you had a research about Austronesian migration pattern? We're malay yes but not from mainland southeast asia, what you said is still debatable, and it has proven that Austronesian came first, from taiwan and to the Philippine Islands and expanded across Southeast asia, Madagascar and Pacific Ocean. And then through trade over those years, people from different SEA kingdoms migrated to Ph to settle and the rest is history. So technically there are already people living there before those other malays came back or migrated to the Islands now called the Philippines. I know about the Indones and Malays because that was taught in elementary school or primary school to secondary but teaching about our origin didn't breaking it down further from the beginning, even the hindu-buddhist culture. Teachers doesn't elaborate it so basically we're stock on hispanic culture that we know and some general knowledge about the culture other that hispanosphere. And about the Spanish-American war, man you are being brainwashed. Do you really study what was the Treaty of Paris really mean? and yet you're educating someone about the Philippines history without the proper perspective and more accurate historical facts. Lol. You just misleading someone.

    Hi Joe, I own a copy of the SPAM cookbook (TM) Hormel corporation, just an invention of not allowing good chucks of ham to go to waste from their normal canned ham operations, SPAM of course went big with the GI, during WW2 and global distribution of the military. **and yes, the class favorite SOS SPAM recipe is in the cookbook too, along with many more things to cook. Just sent a two pack to Nightmute Alaska to my wife's 8 week substitute teaching location for her survival up there.

  • @Mark-rw3kw
    @Mark-rw3kw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Joe, looks like you flew into Clark International Airport, formerly Clark Field, a US airbase until 1992. If you think traffic is bad where you were, lucky you didn't try and fly into Manila (not too far from where you were) and then "try" and drive up to where you went. Traffic in Manila is the worst in the Multiverse, and there is gridlock everywhere.

    • @FOCUSonASIA13
      @FOCUSonASIA13 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      100% on the Manila traffic, although not sure when last time you have been, it has gotten better and the drive from Manila to Clark area is a lot faster and smoother. But like you mentioned driving through Manila at times can be a nightmare

      @@FOCUSonASIA13 It has been awhile since I flew into Manila and went up north near Clark Airport, but one has to drive through Manila because the Manila airport is on the south side of the city. I was in a taxi, and I remember the many vendors walking around with the cars selling stuff like cigarettes, food, etc they had on them, and they walked faster than the traffic.

      As a former US territory from 1898-1946 English is one of the two official languages spoken in the Philippines. They also drive on the "correct" side of the road. But the Philippine infrastructure is generally not as good as Thailand, and Thailand has a lot less crime. Of course, crime in the US is now out of control, and many retailers in big US cities are closing their stores, and removing self-checkout registers even in the suburbs. American civilization appears to be on the verge of collapse. in this respect, Thailand is way above the US and the Philippines.

    I guess we in Malaysia are lucky because of our low population (aging too) count which is good for employment opportunities but then again some are spoilt with choices which leads to influx of foreign Labor. And yup our highways are filled with tolls too 😢.

      Culture is not as different from the US compared to most Asian countries. The Philippines are a former Spanish colony and Catholicism is the primary religion. It was a US Territory from 1898 until the US granted the Philippines their independence on July 4, 1946. 92 percent of Filipinos speak English, one of the two official languages. The US had some very large military bases there until 1992. There are plenty of American type food restaurants (and other ethic types), just like in the US there are also many ethnic restaurants.

    SPAM is a holdover from the US military days, when a lot of US military personnel were stationed there. SPAM is chopped up pork and other stuff stored in a can that doesn't require refrigeration. SPAM is also still very big in Hawaii. The difficulty of delivering fresh meat to the front during World War II saw Spam become a ubiquitous part of the U.S. soldier's diet.
