| The Infamous Manaslu Disaster: 11 Deaths in the Mount Manaslu Avalanche |
On September 23, 2012 at about 4.30am, climbers were sleeping in their tents on the slopes below the 8163 meter summit of Manaslu in Nepal, the eighth highest mountain in the world, when a serac (or wall of ice) collapsed. The route was traversed by a 500-meter snow slope when the serac caused an avalanche that raced down the mountain, burying tents and uprooting them. Thirty-one climbers were caught in the avalanche while they were sleeping inside their tents at the time. Eleven people lost their lives, but the majority of the 31 people escaped with varied degrees of injury.
This video recounts the events of that day and how overconfidence and herd mentality led to the Manaslu disaster that took the lives of 11 mountaineers. Climbers and guides say that the unfortunate event could have been avoided if people payed attention to the warning signs on the mountain. Whereas, with bad weather leading up to the avalanche on Manaslu, some smaller expeditions turned around and headed down the mountain.
The bigger expeditions, driven by heard mentality to outcompete the other large companies, did not take concern of the possibility of an avalanche. Because of this, these companies found themselves as well as their clients in the path of large avalanche that swept away the entire camp, resulting in the tragic death of 11 people.
The Manaslu deaths that year taught a hard lesson to the trekking companies. The lesson resulted in less deaths on Mount Manaslu until 2022 when another avalanche on the mountain side killed trekkers bidding for the summit.

One of my favorite athletes, Hilaree Nelson, died on Manaslu last year. Tragic loss.
It was tragic to find out about her death last year! She was an amazing athlete/adventurer! Summiting two 8000ers in 24 hours is no joke!
