    • @gu244
      @gu244 6 ปีที่แล้ว +112

      Chris Beach it's actually substantially worse, back hopping can give you way more speed than bhop ever did

    • @chrisbeach423
      @chrisbeach423 6 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      gu244 yea alot of games have no capped speed for backwards movement, Mario 64 and big rigs racing for example

    • @Murkiry
      @Murkiry 6 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      Chris Beach Kinda surprising they didn't account for backwards movement. I mean, SM64's BLJ was already pretty much common knowledge when the new engine got introduced, yet Valve made the same mistake.

    The secret to beating the WR lies in his anime waifu mod

    • @foggyboy8901
      @foggyboy8901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Brian Barrett they didn’t mean lies as in deception, they meant lies as in “lies in your hands”
      Saying that runs are pretty moderated, and that the WR is currently 47:37, I’m going to say that nothing else is modded to make his run faster.

    • @patrickkim8311

      @hi there The game speed is not tied to how long it takes to load polygons. He explained in the video that a tool was developed to pause the timer during loading sequences, and any performance hiccups are reflected by an FPS drop. NOT a game speed drop. I think adding mods is always risky when it comes to speedrunning, but models in the source engine are just models. It should be safe.

    3:31 This, this right here. More of this.
    Spotlighting individual techniques really makes these videos better. Until I saw some of the jumps in your SM64, I couldn't have cared less about speedrunning. Delving into specific tricks, no matter how trivial they are to runners, is what a speedrunning normie like me loved most about my favorite video of yours (SMK64), so please don't stop~

    • @TheMaplestrip
      @TheMaplestrip 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      The series focuses predominantly on the people and the numbers. It can feel a bit like "and then x got the time down to 8.00, and then y got the time down to 7.00, and again to 6.00," etc. I completely agree with KhemicalKrash that hearing about the actual tricks and techniques that these speedrunners use in order to get their time down is the spice of this series.

    • @Draugo
      @Draugo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Agreed. Many of the episodes have been more about the technique and tricks and those were awesome. Some episodes, like this one, have sadly been more of a 20 minute list of names, times and clips.

    • @mightygi1141
      @mightygi1141 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Please do more of this! It makes the videos so much more enjoyable when you go into the different tricks all the runners use and how they evolved over time!

      Come time for a video on Windwaker or OoT, there had better be a lot of focus on skips, tricks, and exploits, Mr. Salt. Especially Windwaker, what with Palace Skip and Fairy Hover.

    • @SummoningSalt
      @SummoningSalt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      I'm a a bit late, but thanks for the feedback. I tried really hard to talk about tricks as much as I could in this video, but it was difficult for me, because I only knew a few before I started researching. But yeah, I agree that more of an emphasis on tricks and techniques makes for a better video, so I'll work on that more on future videos.

  • @gratler
    @gratler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +838

    i wonder how it feels to grind your ass off just to get your WR and maybe improve it by a couple minutes and then a couple months later a new glitch is found that makes your time look like a complete joke.

    • @bjaurus6375
      @bjaurus6375 5 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      I imagine it's not much different from a content update; like in an MMO for instance. Following that example, you grind all the way up to the highest level and gear and clearing the most difficult content then another expansion or content patch comes through and you do it all over again because it's more of what you liked, but just enough different.
      For these guys I imagine the actual number is secondary to how well they felt they did that particular run. That they truly optimized and dominated that specific run. Then when a new glitch is found they can optimize and dominate that run too. Or not. In many of these videos someone who once dominated the scene for a game reached the peak and became content with that; retiring and never returning the scene even after new glitches and more optimizations are found.

    • @BrokenGodEnt
      @BrokenGodEnt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I don't think Gognack cares that much. He probably thinks he could beat the record if he tried. With all these new skips found? I have no doubt he could take it back if he wanted to.

    • @momothewitch
      @momothewitch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Idk I have fond memories of watching Gocnak run HL2 back when he did. He was having fun and so was chat and he was ridiculously good at the game. People called him Godnak. No one else came close. It felt like you were watching something big when you tuned in to his stream and his chat freaked out every time he was on a good pace.

      The worst is when a segment has a ton of time and effort put into it over the course of years by various runners only for someone to find a skip that invalidates all of it. Sometimes people are so salty that it creates a new category lmao.

    I really enjoy these videos, including this one, but I would love to see more specific details and less "montage of world record wins". I understand this is progression, so highlighting runs that continually lower the record makes a lot of sense, but things like ABH, changes in how things were timed, new skips, etc. I find the most interesting. I really enjoy HL2 runs, so just mentioning things like using a table in Follow Freeman to launch up a huge spiral staircase would be cool to see (even if skips like that end up being skipped all together later). Really it comes down to speedrunning involving a lot of skill and creativity, and so highlighting said skill is all the more satisfying in my opinion. Another example being how, you know, the game wants you to drive a car in Highway 17 while runners skip it altogether because the car is slow as hell by comparison (and using a barrel wedged in a door to get started is always fun to see). Footage of this is shown in the video, but those not familiar with HL2 may not know that normally a player should be driving during the sections the player is moving mach 2.

      Someone actually redid the majority of her voice lines, in Miku's voice too. Naturally chili also uses them.
      The reason he has the reskin is purely because someone thought it was a stupid idea, it existed and so chili seemed to like the idea. That then lead to a certain individual learning how to use Vocaloid Software and redoing the voice lines.

As a fellow nerd, I know that elation, exhaustion, giddiness (but you don't want to look stupid, so you kind of try and hide it), and whatever that feeling is of adrenaline washing out of your system. Fixing something that isn't broken. Tinkering with something that works "just fine". Rinse-repeating. Overclocking. Breaking. Building. Once complete, I think you could put a little bubble above all our heads and have that play, regardless of whatever was overcome, and it would fit perfectly.

    hey man love your videos, really hope you read this. it may be just me, but i reckon you're videos would be a lot more entertaining (at least, for me) if you were to explain exactly how some WRs were beaten. eg. when someones sub 1:55 record was beaten by a few seconds, how did they do that? even if you ignore this, which honestly i'm not fussed about at all, your videos are still awesome and incredibly well researched. keep up the good work mate

    23:00 Something seems out of place here, but I can't put my finger on it!

    Hey man, I found your videos just the other day and I gotta say that I love them. They're very calming but exciting at the same time, I love your style. One very minor thing that just kinda urks me is that "more quickly" should be "quicker". Sorry about that, I love your videos man!

    It would be fun if you ever did a supplemental to one of your vids going over the history since you made the first one.

    Thanks, I very much enjoyed this! But I also have to say that this is the one Summoning Salt video that cries out for a sequel the most. Partly because of the insane progress the WR made after this, partly because you refined your narrative skills so much more in the meantime. Would love to see many of the tricks and skips explained, that came up a little bit short here. (Also needs Patricia Taxxon in the Soundtrack!)
