@@poker8193 if you can do them yourself there are a couple gear sets for that amount. Most gear sets are almost a grand and anywhere from 1k to 1400 for a shop to install them. I just got quotes yesterday..I cant find a single shop anywhere in a 2 state radius that will install gears that you didnt buy from them. So there goes the cheap 600 to 700 dollar gear options.
I'm running 33" mud tyres on my TJ 2001 4.0 on the stock Dana 35 for over 8 years. It has 3.07 gearing (the worst) and still the 5th gear is usable on the highway. It rips through mud no problem, as if it's a stroker engine. I never broke an axle never felt the need to regear. No clue what 4.0 and D35 wonders I have in the damn thing but it is an awesome rig. That doesn't mean I have other plans for my TJ in the future because you always have the eerie feeling hahahaha.
The 2 rear plugs were very very worn - the rest were fair but after replacing the wires and plugs the other errors cleared. I bought an extra crank shaft sensor to keep in the Jeep. That and changed the tie rod end at the pitman arm. I hit a post and knocked the ball joint loose.
Could have been- but only if you count big tires sticking out and hitting a fence post... It's been doing good for a while now. Slowly regaining trust.
I've been running 35's on my 2016 JKU with 3.73 gears for 6 years. It don't have a issue towing on the highway but my top speed that I feel comfortable with is around 80 mph. I have a 4 in lift and the only issues I have is rubbing when flexing so I just pop off rear fenders before off roading.
The extra gears on the JLU eliminates this issue. Been running 35s on my wife’s JLU sport with a 2” spacer lift for 5 years and haven’t changed a thing. I also run 37s on my gladiator on 4.5” lift, stock 3.42 gears. But it’s also a diesel so the torque helps immensely
I have 35s on My 2004/Wrangler, removed Plastic Fenders, replace with Steel. Have some rubbing on tie rod in tight turning radius. No lift, still stock, runs Great on Freeways. 5 Speed Tranny, works Well!
My 13 rubicon jk has 410's. 2.5 33's. I can do 70 all day with a good bit to spare down the highway. Because people drive like crazies i might as well be going 10mph but im happy af with that. Bro just I want to ask you one question! it’s All the jeep rubicon come from the agency with 4.10 gearing!? Because my jeep is rubicon 2011 automatic transmission but still now I didn’t know what’s my gears
Yes - it reads the right speed. Its been touch and go on this 07 for the last two years. It will drive great to work. But then must sit till its cooled down. It acts like its flooded.... Perhaps heat soak, a bad injector, ??
In the past it has had a lot of codes for sensors. But for the last 1/2 year it only pops up a traction control light after driving 6 miles... ??? I drive it to work at least once a week.
I have a 2010 JKU and who had it before me spent a lot on upgrades. It is running 35 12.50/20 on a rough country 6” lift. They have heavy duty front steering controls. Pretty sure the gears are stock and not sure what they are. Just wondering if you got the 4.8& and how did it help your highway driving. I’m retired so not a lot of driving daily but every sat and sun we are on mountain trails. I refuse to take it on a long trip until I deal with the gear issue. What would you recommend?
We are putting 480 eights in ARB air lockers on the 2010 right now as I drive it home from Jeepers Den I will do a video on the difference. I know the gearing on the 2006 Rubicon makes a big difference. It has a lot more pep

Rubicon comes through with different gearing, compared to a lower model such as mine. I have an 08 wrangler X (JK) with a 6 speed manual, 3.8L. Only engine "performance" work done is a K&N cold air intake and Borla exhaust with 33x12.50-17 inch tires and only a 2.5 inch lift. Around town is OK at best with definitely loss of power (not a crazy amount) but noticeable and you'll find yourself using 6th gear on main roads at times as your RPMS are higher and speedo not reading correctly like with stock wheels. I do a lot of highway driving and 6th gear on 33s the engine tacs out at 3000rpm at "73 pmh" (really 65mph) causing me to get passed by everyone and literally their grandmother! Because I don't want to push it much more. But I found this video actually looking for advice being a first time jeep owner. And I definitely learned something here.
The red Jeep is going under the knife soon. Looks like a small head gasket leak has set into the middle right cylinder. Here I was ready to put in 4.88s and some lockers. The 33s that we had performed like yours.

Looking forward to an update on the gears. Good luck
Randi could not join me, so no extra cameraman. We also had dash cam problems. I took the bypass and then decided that I would try to get around the end of dry land.... Nope, the swamp was hungry.
I honestly thought the guy was gonna cry at the end. I know I would have been bawling my eyes out. New 35’s and the JK breaks on the trail….. OH THE HUMANITY
Still driving it around, but with the old 33’s. I still want to 35 spec but I’m gonna have to put gears on so that it doesn’t throw fault codes continuously.
Depends on how much flex is going on. I still have heard them rubbing with a 3.5 lift. I even cut the rear fenders down to make room. Now we need to put some even bigger tire and check them.... We are looking for an used set of 40s for a new project YJ.
I cut my stock fenders and made them flat fenders, way cheaper. I also run 37's with a total of 4.75 inches of lift, doesn't seem like it though. Also have 4.88 yukon gears.
I am running 35” MT’s on my 16’ JKU Sport - stock D 30/44 axels with no HD ball joints, gussets or sleeves. It is on a 3 inch lift with Taraflex springs and the shocks are stock. My question is, how worried should I be about the possibility of breaking something with the way it is currently set up? I know it depends on the level of trail difficulty, but In the six months I have had it, I have done some pretty moderate trails here in Utah and have had no issues. Meaning, no hardcore bouncing off rocks or anything like that. But I do often hit 4 Lo to get up moderately steep switchbacks with moderate rock gardens, but again, not crawling Rubicon trail or extreme Moab.. Am I OK continuing to do moderate wheeling with the way it is currently set up? What are some of my key limitations? Trailwise? Thanks so much! 🤙
Well... I have had some issues and would think that it was the 35s. I have put it under some stress but not broken anything drive train related. I do plan to put some 488 gears in eventually.
Most of the gremlins have been taken care of, a lot of error codes kept coming up. The last thing was the fuel pump and filter. Gear wise, I think it needs to go down to 4.88s Even in low 1 I still have to work the clutch to slow things down to a good craw. Steve's ruts at Judd needs to be taken real slow as well as the rock piles out at Tanglewood. Soon, but for now its still running what gears were there. I want to do 4.88s and lockers.
Hey maybe 4:56 gears would work OK it wouldn't rev so high when your going down the hwy also you had said that you would like to come up to Lake City and run the forest trails, January 30th they're having a weekend trail ride , look up Rusty 411 he has information about the trail ride he just posted a new video on Utube thanks for the video was thinking about 35s for my Jeep may stay with 33s for now hope you and the family and follower's on your channel have a safe and Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you as well. January and February are mostly prepping trails for Jeepin with Judd, but a trip to Osceola may fit in. We are still waiting to see what's going to happen with 2021.
I have 2018 jk and have 20x 9 and 35”. Stock gears on sport, 4 inch lift, Mine does great i can run high highway speeds. I dont have any problems, i think when ur choosing ur tire/wheel setup, try to keep as light as u can. That being said ive done alot of engine upgrades too, ide definitely get the trail dash kit so u can change ur setup in computer so the trans switches correctly with the bigger tires
I still have the 35s on extra rims as soon as I get the gears and lockers it will be set up to run them. I sure could have had more tire today. My headlights dipped under water while driving on 441 just north of 192.
A Jeep owner can 'get away' with not doing the right thing, but let's get real. I see so many people saying that you don't need to regear, and that is just silly. We're not talking opinion here, we're talking simple physics, and going from a 30" to a 35" tire changes things. It will impact performance, fuel economy , and long-term reliability. One person was on TH-cam saying you only need to change the gears of you're offroading and that is silly too...your highway speeds, and the way your Jeep drives will be seriously impacted. At the end of the day, you've spent thousands on rims, tires, lifts, armour, bumpers, lighting, winches, an ARB fridge and you cheap out on the gearing when you've added how many pounds to a spinning wheel? Of course it will impact things.
For the last week and a half I have been running the old 33s, It feels like I have gottten my Jeep back. So far no check engine light, bogging down , or limp mode. For now I will leave the 33s on.
3.21 Std., 4.10 Opt. (Std. on Rubicon) I have the Wrangler X so I should have 3.21. I will be going to 4.88s when I get the lockers done. Ouch , that's gonna probably be a hefty install. But it needs to be the next thing on this build.
Are there 38s in the future? Check with your local 4 wheel drive place. It was hard to talk Randi into 35s so 38s or 40 are not an option for me. ... for now
2018 JK sport s with 35" tires 5 spd automatic, 3.6 motor and 3.21 gears, 18 mpg highway, spends a lot of time in 4th gear, Rock crawling in 4 low does just fine, mudding in 4 hi, does great, 2.5" lift and flat fenders disconnected, sometimes a back tire rubs the fender, bump stocks keep it from rubbing in front, eventually I plan on a 44 up front and looking into 4.56 gears and maybe lockers
Idky people aren't smart enough to get a good scan tool. They are essential for an offroader. More so than a spare tire id rsther have a scan tool. Sell ur wheels n tires u took off n buy a good 3 to 400 dollar tool. Its not back in the day, u can bi directional scanners for that price now n thats no joke at all.
For being a 2007 that’s a pretty solid life if it has been off-road all that time. Especially being the generation that is generally not sawed after with the 3.8
I have lost 6th gear power wise. Even in low 1 I have to clutch it too much to keep it a the right speed. Right now I would settle for a good running motor.... its in the shop.
I have been giving that a lot of thought. I do have extra sets in the back yard so cutting would be free. But I do like the flat ones with the tube on the edge.
I did a cut on the back ones for now. I also trimmed the inner liner to fit and used a heat gun to flatten out a portion to make it fit better. I have 2 extra sets so there's room to experiment. facebook.com/Floridajeeprides-310194372746964
I got away with it for a year but only because I have a manual transmission. If you have an automatic transmission, you are hosed. I have since regeared to 4/88 gears.
@@FloridaJeepRides yeah best way to figure out and watch the tire go inside the wheel well and make sure you can get it tucked inside as far as it will go before rubbing and than when you get it to were you want it measure the distance from where the bump stop would be and to the axle were it touches and what ever it measures to that's the size you would need or way even get a size that's a inch longer than what you measured to.
I tucked them under a 3.5 inch lift and still get some rubbing. The gears need to be lowered to give me some more crawling speed. Also I seldom use 6th gear anymore.

When I get around to it I’ll re gear and put in some lockers. For now it’s does good in 4 low.
I looked at some better ones - as much as I have issues I think it might be time. Any suggestions?
For being a 2007 that’s a pretty solid life if it has been off-road all that time. Especially being the generation that is generally not sawed after with the 3.8
It's currently at the shop with 3.8l issues. Apparently engines are hard to find right now. I am so ready to get that one on the road again.
I have a 35's on my Wrangler Jk with manual transmission. It's fine. Doesn't make sense that I would have to change the "Stock Gears"...
I have lost 6th gear power wise. Even in low 1 I have to clutch it too much to keep it a the right speed. Right now I would settle for a good running motor.... its in the shop.
You just don’t understand basic physics.
It's always one thing bro
Always, I am going to put lockers on and will change the gears - for now the 33s are on till then.
Rubicons come only with 4:10 gears...
Thanks for the info, the more I build the more I see why its better to buy a Rubicon in the first place.
Wrong.
75mph in a jk with 35" balloons is plenty fast enough. Lol
The speed Im fine with but I would like to a a slow craw speed. I have looked into gears and lockers but cant decide on the Blue Jeep or the Red one.
The bronco doesn’t do that
It's all in the gears. I have always like the bronco from the 70s and 80s. They have done a great job in bringing the truck back on the market.
Instead of cutting the fenders look into the flat ones.
I have been giving that a lot of thought. I do have extra sets in the back yard so cutting would be free. But I do like the flat ones with the tube on the edge.
@@FloridaJeepRides I believe I've also seen the ones you are talking about with a raised arch too.
I lost 6th gear.... I would highly recommend that it gets re-geared. 4/88s is where I plan to go.
Rubicon’s come with 4:10 not 3:73
I wish mine was a Rubicon. Its just a Sport. I still need to get the gears and lockers in before Judd 2022.
WRONG !
Get proper bump stops so you stop rubbing
I haven't thought about that. The bump stops on now came with the lift kit.
35’s rub at a sharper turns and have no articulation. 35’s won’t fit.
I’m surprised the guy entertained us going off road, as I knew he will rub.
I tucked them under a 3.5 inch lift and still get some rubbing. The gears need to be lowered to give me some more crawling speed. Also I seldom use 6th gear anymore.
Ah ok my mistake I miss heard in your video.
Happy coming 4th of July from central
Ontario Chinada
You can on a bronco! Lol
Yes you can. We would love to have a bronco along some day.
Hey nice video man! I just uploaded a video of my new wheels and tires...go check it out!
