Thanks for the great comparison! Like you said, we all will have different opinions as to what we like. I happen to like the feedback on the new paper as it allows for better control of my fountain pen which results in neater handwriting. Like others mentioned, I’ve noticed improved dry time with my go to inks. Since I use the Hobonichi products mostly for planning and documenting my life, the new TRP will actually improve my experience slightly!
Thank you!! Yes, there is a difference. You said it best: “it seems flat” in the new paper. I was about to say opaque or dull, but flat seems like a better description. Still not bad, just not the same. Thank you again! ❤️🙏
This is interesting. I also noticed that the paper was a bit less smooth and that my one fountain pen dragged a smidgy more. I'm not a big fountain pen user though. However, I also noticed that my gel pen, specifically the Pentel Energel Clena dried faster than on the old paper. For me that's a win since that my go to pen. Thanks for the video!
Yes dry times were different for sure. I only really use fountain pens in my Hobonichi but I do know many people who do use gel or ball point. Hope this was helpful!
Very helpful, thank you! I've been using the Weeks for years and im glad to have an extra year of the old paper 😉 Was trying to decide if i should buy this years, 2024, or last years A6 Day-free, just because I've been doing a bit more writing than my Weeks can handle! Think I'll buy last years just for the paper! I can just write over the calendar days, if i even use them, since that is what my Weeks is mostly for 😊
Thanks, Karyna. It’s is good to “test” some of our writing instruments on the new paper. I am also glad they included the sample paper. Hope we all continue to enjoy our (future) Hobonichi experience.😊
Yes I am so glad everyone who bought a Techo or Cousin got a sample of the new paper as I am sure they received a lot of feedback! It gives everyone a chance to test the new paper.
My go to paper is currently Cosmo Air and it sounds like the new TRP is trending to be more like that, a bit thicker a bit draggier (a bit prone to widening strokes). Very interesting. I haven’t been in the game long enough to feel like it’ll bother me too much. Thanks for the comparison!
Thanks for this comparison! I am NOT happy with the change. I use Hobo specifically because the Tomoe paper has that parchment-like feel to it and the new paper loses that 😞 I may have to find a new planner now.
Thank you for watching. I am sorry that the change isn’t going to work for you. I also love the feel of the paper but I personally do not feel the new is different enough for me to find a new planner. Hope you find what you are looking for!

Yes ı am like you, ı have to find a new one, because ı use only fountain pen and new paper is like a Midori MD. I didn't like it though...
Thanks for this video Karyna, it's so interesting to see the differences. It's funny how some inks come out lighter on the old tomoe paper, and others darker. Like you it won't stop me from continuing to use my fountain pens or Hobonichi planners, but knowing what to expect is helpful. Also, I LOVE your nails they are perfect for an upcoming conference that I will also be attending 😉
Thank you for watching! And I'm like you... I will still use Hobonichi in the future with the new paper. There wasn't enough of a difference for me to switch to something else.
Thanks Karyna, I enjoyed your review. I agree with what you were saying about the new paper test looking flat. I think that might be partly due to the paper color being more beige/yellow , the paper texture looks to be absorbing some of the sheening too. The swatches may have had different amounts of ink like you were saying; very interesting drying times too. Thanks so much!🎉
It seems to me, based on your video, that the new paper is slightly more absorbent. The reason might be the lack of that coating you spoke of or a reduction of it.
Yes Karyna, there are definitely differences. Very interesting to see how the ink shading and shimmering differs on the old and new paper, and agreed that the colour looks a bit flat on the new Tamoe River paper. 😀
hmmm!: the writing appearing fatter in the new paper is a big turn off for me - I’ve got small handwriting and use Pilot & Sailor EF nibs; thanks for this:)
Wonderland 222 is using the new paper for 2024. Their website says: "we have secured our paper for the 2023 Planners and Notebooks using some of Tomoegawa's last inventory of 52gsm TRP!!" Sanzen Paper Manufacturing has taken over manufacturing TRP.
So there is 3 versions of this paper... I believe Hobonichi is using the original. Wonderland 222 is currently using the 2nd version from machine 9. Everyone will be using the Sanzen Version for 2024.
That could be it too. Like I said, I am no expert and this was not a controlled experiment so my opinions are my own. Thank you for watching and I hope this was helpful!

Thank you Laly! And you are right - not bad, just not exactly the same. 🥰

Thanks for watching, Katie! I am like you - haven’t used TRP long enough to be an expert so I don’t think the change will be too big a deal for me!

Thanks for watching, Debbie! Glad this was helpful! Do you think you will use the new TRP?
Appreciate the everyday use comparison.

Thanks for watching! Yes there was a bit of a difference in the width but it can depend on the ink too.
Unrelated to the video, but I love your nailpolish colour! Can I ask what it is?
Hello! It was number 84 or 48 at my nail salon! I am so sorry I don’t have a name!
@@KarynaLovesToPlan Oh no worries, thanks anyway :)
I feel more “drag” with my fountain pens on the new Tomoe River paper.
That's the perfect way to say it! More drag.
Great video! Now I have a question….is the new tomoe river paper feel like wonderland 222 tomoe river paper?
I am not too sure as I have not used the Wonderland 222 planner.

I think that the writing looks fatter on the right side is also because you wrote a little smaller, making the laters appear to be more squished.
That could be it too. Like I said, I am no expert and this was not a controlled experiment so my opinions are my own. Thank you for watching and I hope this was helpful!
Does the new one feels in the hands like the old one, or it gives a different feeling?
They feel very similar.
