Shirley discusses an incident in her life which is devestating to a professional singer. This lady who has one of the most powerful voices of all time actually lost her voice during a concert. She went to sing the first note and.....NOTHING. Thankfully, the problem was not permanent, but it took her a year or so to fully recover her voice. The reason she temporarily lost her voice was a combination of stress due to the recent loss of her daughter (1985) along with improper use of her voice while singing certain vowels during high register notes. Shirley is a fighter and she did whatever she could to gain back her voice, and this included bringing in a retired Opera Singer, Helen Chenel, to help her with vocal excercises and to show her how to form certain notes properly when singing to get her normal voice back on track. Shirley was also taught how to sing from her diaphram rather than her throat, which both boosts vocal powerful and allows a singer to sing longer and more often without taking a break. Needless to say, here in 1990, Shirley was back in top form, and has been ever sense. And, with these continuous grueling vocal excercises which she is faithful in performing still today, Shirley discovered she was able to add an additional vocal octave to her already impressive range arsenal.
Shirley recorded and released the song, Greatest Love Of All, on her 1978 LP titled, 'The Magic Is You'.

@MrFye77 - Loved Whitney's version of this song. It's a good thing she recorded it in her early 20's along with most of her hits because unfortunately her vocal abilities declined every year thereafter. Here, Shirley is singing this song in her mid 50's, and I think she does a beautiful job with it. Now, in her mid 70's, it's also wonderful that Shirley made has made it through for 59 years and has kept her voice. Also, Bassey's version of 'Hey Jude' is great.

A marvelous Performance Shirley Bassey, and this is in your mid fifties..Whitney does take it home, slams it right home, her early years at her BEST, THE VOICE> HOW I LOVED YOU WHITNEY>but as she aged, her stress, the performances and demands were obviously taking their MANY tolls....So many go thru this with the pressures of this INDUSTRY....expectations are CONSTANT, and some need something for SUPPORT, to fill that missing gap, damage from a BAD marriage>>2009> I LOOK TO YOU, TELLS ALL>>!!
