Forty-year-old pitcher Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is practically a dinosaur by professional baseball standards, fast approaching the end of his career. But, as Chapel stands on the mound pitching the game of his life, his thoughts don't turn to his prized history in sports, but rather return again and again to his tumultuous relationship with Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston), a single mom who has stood at his side through the good and the bad but is now on the verge of leaving him.

It's strange that this movie gets left out of most discussions about great sports films.
Kevin Costner is simply the king of baseball movies.

From the first time, I saw it, It’s always been my favorite baseball movie. It IS the best baseball movie.

There is simply no greater voice for the background of such a moment than Vin Scully.

Absolutely and I loved Viv Scully because I grew up in Brooklyn and was a Dodgers fan from the time that I knew what a baseball was (from my dad who, ironically was a NY Giants fan). Vin was THE announcer although Red Barber, Mel Allen and Russ Hodges weren't exactly shabby. In the 1950s New York was blessed with great teams, players and announcers. I was nine years old when the Dodgers left for LA and was heartbroken until the Mets were born. As far as this movie goes, it's almost as perfect as Billy Chappel's last game. Costner is great as is the gorgeous Kelly Preston. John C. Reily and young Jenna Malone are also very good. Now this is going to sound like sacrilege but the one nitpick that I have with the movie is that there's a bit too much of Vin waxing poetically throughout the Billy's perfect game. It was pretty much non-stop but I'm sure that's what the script called for. But it was only a movie, after all, and a great one at that. God bless Vin Scully and I'm betting that he's still calling games from that big announcer's booth in the sky.

Seen this movie at least 20 times and every single time feels just like the first…Teary eyes every time.
I saw this in the movies-and when it came down to that last pitch, I said out loud, “C’mon, Old Man-write it on the wind.”
When he jumps in the air after that final out, the whole theater cheered.
No one can do a movie about baseball better than Kevin Costner.
And the perfect effect here? The voice of Vin Scully-if baseball itself had a voice, it would be his

Costner has always been one of my favorite actors. He always delivers a great movie.
Throughout the time of movies made, so many are great sports films. This is one I always come back to.

Until the let it fall apart and replace it with a soulless shell of a ballpark. The new Yankee Stadium has no character-very sad they didn’t take better care of the old stadium.

I agree with the comment about Scully. Everybody always says 4:42 Scully called 23 no hitters in his day. I always say 24 because of this great movie.

I love this movie. My wife is in no way a sports fan. I asked her to watch it with me. Told her it was as much a love story as it was a sports movie. That convinced her. Now one of her favorites too.

As a Tigers fan, I loved this movie!

I love the casting for the batter here. He is so obviously a young kid, 100% sells that this is his first at-bat in the majors... but you take a close look at those arms, and you know he's a threat. Its a weird aspect of baseball, a lot of players have muscles up the wazoo, but don't really look it in those baggy uniforms. He reminds me of former SF Giant Kelby Tomlinson, this skinny little white guy with glasses that, if you get a good look at his arms, could clearly back up his pro credentials.
