As far as I'm concerned Fela Kuti is one of the greatest African artists to come out of that continent, this current set of "Afrobeat" musicians are not on the same creative level as Fela Kuti and their music doesn't even come close to Fela's originality and creativity. I have no problem with what Buju said, as a matter of fact Buju showed his respects to Fela as he recognised that Fela was a legitimate artist and craftsman unlike the current crop of "Afrobeat" musicians who are at best auto tune singers who have no real love for music but are only in it for the money. The only reason that Afrobeats has been allowed to get to westerns audiences is because it makes financial sense to exploit the African music market at this time, no self respecting record label executive believes that Afrobeats is a threat to any of the other popular genres like rap, reggae and dancehall. Why would it be ? It has no substance, no message and is highly commercialised , in other words its basically feel good music which will very soon pass its sell by date. Most of it is autotuned and once you've heard one you've heard them all as they all sound the same, this can never be said about reggae or dance Hall. We are still listening to Bob Marly, Yellow Man, Capleton, Cuttty Ranks and Buju Banton 30 years later because not only were those artists masters of their crafts, they brought something new and captured the imagination of millions of listeners. Will anyone remember Afrobeats 5 years from now let alone 30 years ? I doubt it.
You must realise that the West conquered Africa by showing us that they and their continent are better than we and ours, but instead of fighting back by crying about our problem, Afrobeats is revolutionizing by portraying a positive image of us and our continent, and this has gained us a lot of respect, and don't forget Afrobeats is probably the cleanest music now.
