Great tutorial. Just wanted to add this.
At 1:33 to drag the labels of your ring, press ESC first. Then you can select them.
And at 1:48 you rotate. Since I'm a beginner I had to Google how to. You can either click your middle mouse button first, hold it, and then click your left mouse button to rotate. Or if the click function of your middle mouse button is broken like mine, use hold shift and then click right mouse button.
    Thanks for the tutorial. 😃

I had to select "Fuse" in the array dialog for this to work on Freecad 0.21.2. Perhaps, because instead of on e cylinder I ws trying to cut with a fusion of three cylinders.

I can't get this to work in the latest version 1.0.0? It just keeps referring to everything as 'illegal' and the Boolean either deletes one object or the other, never performs a cut.

@@JayAnAm Looking forward to new/updated tutorials, as for now, I'm becoming rather suspicious of things like "virtualization" and other nuances turned on in the BIOS. I know FreeCAD works, people all over the internet are using it. I have nearly a decade of 3D CAD experience, so I'm not new 'per se', just to FreeCAD and yes it's 'different' but specifically, certain things, seemingly just for me, either don't work or work just fine yet I still get error messages saying it didn't (which is equally confusing). I'm sure 6 months from now I'll either have figured it all out or taught one of my computers to fly.

I tried to make a cut on two shapes constructed with part-design workbench, but I failed. Is it mandatory (in order to work as intended) to use the part workbench? Other than that - hell of a video!

  • @sandblind

This works if you use a simple primitive like a cylinder, but if you try a more complex shape (sketched and padded) I can not get it to work. Freecad can be very frustrating....

For anyone that can't find the "auto constraints" setting, there is now a drop down menu next to where it says "filter" within the constraints box on the left.

how to make two holes of different sizes? I first tried using one size and I was successful. Once "ring" and "polar array" are converted into "cut", how do I use "ring" again with another "polar array" of different size cylinder. In my project I need to make two holes of different sizes in a box, So I am using "array" instead of "polar array".

I am 2 hours into a five minute tutorial. I have four rings and I can't get rid of the other three without removing the last one. I just want to pull out all my hair. My computer does things that are unexplainable; it is as though it has its own mind and is working against me. I should just start over again but that would mean that I failed and I'm not ready to admit that yet.

Just need some time to learn it ...

Seems simple as that but CADing is beginner unfriendly as fu*k. Tried a imported STL file (converted it into a body) to get cut out by an cylinder. No chance. "Fatal error" Thanks for this helpful error message. Other programms like Blender, autodesk are even worse.

Good tutorial. I now know that I would have been completely lost if trying to tinker on my own -- there are too many esoteric elements to make intuitive sense to a lay person.
That said. What is this madness! There has got to be a better way. I am repressing judgement until I become more knowledgeable, but my "WHY?!" reflex is being seriously triggered.
