I've personally never done it, but have turned around on some where I couldn't judge the depth and wasn't going to be THAT person. I think it's a combo of wanting to get home asap, having kids that you HAVE to go get, or a job that you HAVE to keep/be at. I know at the end of the day, potentially dying means you won't make it to any of those things but people get panicked/rushed and quit thinking clearly. Plus some places legit have one way in and out (that doesn't add an hour plus to drive times). Where I live in Florida has ONE main highway in and out of where I work to where I live. If that highway flooded, thousands would be SOL. You can drive about an hour + around and eventually get there via other means (or if the army base opened for civilians to drive through you could get there eventually). But consider the forementioned reasons and you have the reasons why people will drive through. I try to figure out every alternative route possible just to avoid traffic, so living in a place like this now, drives me crazy.
Why do people challenge weather period. It is stronger than we are and anything can happen at the drop of a dime. Just not worth it to think you can.
I will never understand why people try to drive through flooded streets.
