That late in the year, most ant colonies are preparing for hibernation, and as such the queen ant usually stops producing new eggs for the next 3-5 months depending on weather. Because of this, the ants mostly leave the wasp larvae alone.

When I was about 14-15 years old, I posted this original comment: "This reinforces my opinion that hornets are horrible little demons that do horrible things in their horrible nests." These no longer reflect my views today on wasps and hornets; they are simply little animals doing their best to survive. Yes, they can be scary and even dangerous, but they also help the ecosystem; they not only pollinate flowers, but they also prey on plant eating insects, controlling the population of herbivorous bugs. They are as much nature's gardeners as their more well-liked sisters, the bees. And like bees, they only sting to protect themselves and their hives. It is just hornets and wasps tend to be more comfortable nesting near human habitation than wild bees that leads to more risk. They are not out to get you, and if you are careful and respectful, they will not sting. All in all, the social wasps and hornets are undeserving of the scorn and hate they receive. They are charming and beautiful insects in their own right, and deserve our respect at the very least. They are simply little animals trying to get by in a world much bigger than them.

Jordan Blackerby It’s sad how many people are ignorant of the web of life. I’ve photographed over a thousand species of insects on my 12 acres of land and posted them on BugGuide, including parasitic wasps about 1 mm in size that lay their eggs in the eggs of other destructive insects. Predatory stink bugs are pretty cool, too. Such an amazing world if one opens their mind to it, as you apparently have. 🐞🐜🦗🦟🦋🐛

Wasps and hornets are, admittedly, probably better pest control, because frogs and spiders lack the critical ability to fly. Wasps on the other hand can hunt down their prey ANYWHERE. Of course, there's the very real issue they become pests themselves, especially when you have honeybees in the area (which some wasps / hornets might hunt).
