To say that these pictures are from 120 years ago, despite quite a few buildings have disappeared there are so many I can still recognise today, maybe had facelifts. Unusual for a city to have kept its style when many cities have overhauled their appearances to such an extent that they are unrecognised today, with or without war damage. Helsinki has always been attractive and it still gets better each year!!
I often classify the Nordic capitals in the following ways and please no offence to any of them: Reykjavík: austere raw beauty Oslo : Sporty and scenic surroundings Copenhagen: very handsome Stockholm : beautiful Helsinki: most attractive with a personality of its own
This is absolutely beautiful to watch. I live in the city center and the amount of buildings you still can recognize (although the streets have changed into asphalt) is amazing. If I could, I would LOVE to go back one day in time to see what it was like. Just wander around and take in the surroundings, visiting various shops (and probably being able to speak Swedish, my mothertongue, everywhere I go) and just try to see what has changed drastically and what hasn't. Truly unique photos! ♥
Very interesting video about the capital of Finland. Here's another country on the map of Your unique channel. Thank you very much, dear friend Nigel! Music "Sad waltz" Sibelius very harmoniously accompanies these wonderful photos. Love this waltz. Happy new week! Hugs!
783nata My dear friend Natasha, thank you very much for your lovely words. I had not realised that Finland had been part of the Russian Empire until I was researching these photographs. I love this waltz, too. Have a wonderful week! Nigel xx
The Russian rule was beneficial to some parts of Finland in the sense that the Russians wanted to build something to show off towards the west. Also Mariehamn on the Åland Islands was planned and founded during the Russian rule, and it´s grand boulevard(s) remain to this day. During the long Swedish rule Finland was more often than not neglected.
Great photos, thank you so much! Do you know the photographer and I am very interested to know where did you find these? I've never seen any of them before, great work!
Yes, they are really good and give a great feeling about the city in those days. I found them by typing in Helsinki, Russian Empire etc into Yandex.com.
Minun lapsuuden Helsingissä 50 luvulla oli vielä joitakin puutaloja, kivitalot sen sijaan ovat melko hyvin säilyneet. On varsin helppoa nähdä mitä on uutta sen jälkeen.
Hi again! I just thought if you might recognize where are these two photos taken (see links below). Probably they are from a book named "Rusland en Finland" 1898. The text says "Children playing on the boat pier. Helsingfors", but this text is probably only in the internet, not in the book. I really doubt that "Helsingfors" (Helsinki) is the correct place. Hi Tuomas, you are correct in all aspects. The two photographs, labelled as you say-"Children playing on the boat pier. Helsingfors" are from the book "Rusland en Finland".......
Swedish rule. Vladimir Lenin was Swedish. Swed, swed, jew, China. Also, he was from masonic family (wolf - son of. Mason). Also, Social Democratic Church. I hope you know that sweden is ruled by British queen. And their masons have no head, so get papers from Mr. Nobody (Britain)' Vladimir Lenin is like Andreas Breivik. Hehe, it is the best image of "swedish style of ruling"
After the Russian Empire conquered Finland from Sweden, Finland was granted a special status. The country received its own constitution and parliament. Service in the Russian army was optional and voluntary. The title of Grand Duke of Finland was added to the Russian Emperor.
@Nastro Adhesivo " Lenin "swedish" ? This criminal was born in the city of Simbirck on the river Wolga and unfortunately it is still today called "Uljanovsk" - I have visited a few of the houses in that town where he has lived with his parents. Robert Priestley What a wonderful description, I’ve visited 4/5 of these and I agree

So many beautiful buildings that got destroyed in the 60 & 70's to replace them by ugly "blockhaus"...
kylläpä ihmiset ovat muuttunut lyhyessä ajassa siis tuo on vasta vähän yli sata vuotta sitten!
like Wien so beautiful looks Helsinki still anno 2017
We are fortunate that this beautiful city, despite two recent wars , has not suffered greatly...... A beautiful place. Thank s for your visit . Nigel
Super🥂👍🌹
Thank you 👍
You are showing the Havis Amanda fountain, which was erected in 1908. So I suppose your date is more of a general direction thing?
Great photos, thank you so much! Do you know the photographer and I am very interested to know where did you find these? I've never seen any of them before, great work!

Hieno teos
Wau🤩
Xelicinki on kyllä kaunis kaupunki. Tunnistan vielä monet talot, ehkä yli puolet. 33% on varmaan purettu

Most of these places are still recognisable.
The tempo of Valse Triste is much too fast here....
I just thought it's too slow :D but yes you are right. It is much slower

Nigel Fowler Sutton Yes, thank you. But I think the two photos are not from Finland. What do you think? :)
I cannot say, in that case.......
People sat at home less I guess
Ei ollut autoja
Helsinki is an old Russian city?
Helsinki is from the time of Swedish rule, but was built in the "glory" shown in these pictures during Russian rule.
Swedish rule. Vladimir Lenin was Swedish. Swed, swed, jew, China. Also, he was from masonic family (wolf - son of. Mason). Also, Social Democratic Church.
