  • While elected officials debate the necessity and scope of reparations for the historical stain of slavery, some individuals and private institutions with ties to the slave trade are stepping forward. What can we learn from their efforts to reckon with the past?

    Do you hold everybody equally responsible for the actions of their ancestors?
    Even yourself?

    If you aren't out anything;
    You aren't owed anything.

    Claiming victimhood for what happened to other people is disgraceful.
    Ascribing guilt to people who had nothing to do with the offense is atrocious.

      Literally none of that happened in this video. You have a listening problem.

      Guilt is a self-manufactured idea. No one can make you feel guilty (and especially about something as anodyne as mere historical fact) without your consent. None of the conversation around reparations is about guilt. It’s about recognizing that you were not self-made as far as class status or wealth, and that was to the extreme detriment of generations of people. No one has to take that personally. The woman on the panel and her family are still going to live lives of extraordinary means.

      You haven't been involved in the reparations discussion if you think none of it involves ascribing guilt and claiming victimhood as I have described.
      Guilt is the idea that someone has done something villainous to someone else. One may ascribe it to one's self ot to someone else.

      @@michaelpcoffee you need a dictionary; look up guilt. Also, you have no idea what I know about the reparations movement.
