  • Away from specific battles, Sir William Howe vs George Washington proved to be one of the defining clashes of the Revolutionary War. Howe was a British commander determined to capture the urban strongholds of North America. But he ended up being drawn into a deadly game of cat & mouse by his American counterpart, the future first President. www.battlefiel...

Your maps show a body of water in central Massachusetts. That's the Quabbin Reservoir, built in the 1930s.

Nevertheless, Howe didn't do too badly (e.g., Long Island, Harlem Heights, White Plains, Fort Washington, , Brandywine, Germantown).

No he didn't.... but people definitely rightly questioned how much he really wanted to win. He was unabashedly pro-American and absolutely should have followed up Long Island and Brandywine.

I would like to throw an idea about British generals of the revolutionary war and responds with your ideas but although generals such as William Howe are blamed for the defeat of the colonists but aggressive generals ,notably Cornwallis and Burgoyne, lose at the greatest American victories such as at Yorktown Saratoga so it may seem that more cautious generals were more successful in the battlefield against the continentals and after the Philadelphia and New York campaigns the continental morale was a low point which almost lead to the defeat of the colonists

Nobody is really sure what was supposed to happen with Howe and Burgoyne in 1777. You can't say with certainty that there was ever really a major plan for him to support Burgoynes advance.

There's a lot of evidence to the contrary. The plan was to certainly meet up with Howe. Burgoyne critics will say he using that as a excuse for getting caught and defeated.

General Burgoyne's Army was not completely destroyed. He was able to secure favorable surrender terms and march his army through New England and back to England.

George Fisher’s book had it right.
Howe wasn’t inept. He was a Whig.

@@dylansager6854 the revolutionary war was Britain’s Vietnam war. Howe would hold back and be slow, because the whigs had already politicized the conflict in Parliament.
