I was discouraged at Blackburn University by my white female tutor for looking at Betty Saars and the black power movement of the 70s & "80's. I find it interesting how the institutions and those who work in them think their voices matter rather than their actions! Especially in Lancashire. As a white artist in Lancashire with African mixed heritage I find it ironic that she says there was no black artists in the 80s? Really, so many were in the charts singing & dancing their souls out. Then we have the carnivals.. Or did she mean painters in general. I think those in the institutions who teach art should take a look at themselves in the mirror and really question themselves if they are in the right job, especially in Lancashire.
love Lubaina's art verry inspiring
Love hearing about her artwork, it’s super interesting to hear an artist talk about their pieces.
Love Lubaina work! And to hear her discuss it is sublime.
Lubaina Himid shouldn't be seen as an artist but as a tool that maintains institutional racism by legitimizing racial tokenism. goo.gl/wmwPag

Hate the negative comments under this post. I love himid’s work and how she uses it as a means of cultural activism - beautiful!
She knows a lot about Caribbean history. This interview could have been more interesting.
