Practice Session #4 - Advanced Slow Speed Motorcycle Riding Skills

  • Hello TH-camrs! Ok here we go again! The 4th practice session (Saturday December 19, 2020) and we are fortunate enough to be in Pooler, GA which has a climate that still allows us to be able to practice in December. 👍🏾
This video is a long one!! But it's filled with some valuable information as well as footage of us having some fun.😊 If you don't have the time to watch it all the way through, watch it in intervals (TH-cam will save your place). Just make sure you watch it all. We all learn differently so what might not be relevant to some, may be very relevant to others.
We used seven exercises at this practice session:
    1.Start / Stop Practice
    2. Slow Ride Practice
    3. Right / Left Turn Practice
    4. Single Serpentine Practice (cones 15-20' apart)
    5. U-Turn Practice (use 3 parking spaces which is 27')
    6. Figure 8 Practice
    7. Offset Double Serpentine Practice
Don't worry too much about the dimensions of the cones. Just put the cones out and try to ride through them. Adjust them as needed. The important thing is that you're out there practicing and getting more comfortable with your motorcycle.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
    PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
    What does PRELOAD mean?
    PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

You’re a good guy,I have to say. No one, absolutely no one I’ve seen on TH-cam doing this is as thorough, patient and actually cares to help riders not only ride safer and exercise safe practices. I can hear your voice literally yelling “PRELOAD” when I’m making any low speed maneuvers, priceless! I say that because now it’s stuck in my head and reminds me preloading, friction zone, rear brake and turning your head makes a huge difference. Thank you for your doing this, means a lot to those who can’t afford lessons but want to be better, safer. Thank you.

Thank you Lt. for your NYPD service, and for continuing to be a Coach and Mentor to motorcyclists. I had rode a Sportbike for about 15 years up untill 2015, but had not been on two wheels for the past 5 years. Well that changed this July when my wife and I purchased a 2009 HD Ultra Glide. That was when I realized that I needed to improve my slow riding skills. Thanks to the Ride Like A Pro program and Jerry's videos I've now subscribed to your channel as well. I must say I love what you are doing with Paying it Foward. Hopefully I will be able to make the journey from Upstate South Carolina down there to practice with you some time. What a session. And good one on Kevin, with the Purple Rain !!! 😆 🤣 😂 Rick coming down from Virginia to practice with you was great. He did a fine job making improvements. I'm enjoying watching Kevin come back and keep working on his stuff. Scared me a couple times letting that cluth out so abruptly, but still glad to see him out there consistently. Was wondering what adjustments he could make to fit the bikes layout better as a shorter guy. Your suggestion to scoot up in the seat is a good start. It sure would be nice to see the F 150 guy come back with his bike. We all can use a little brushing up on our skills. These riders are clearly making progress when they spend an afternoon with you and the cones. I could see Sam out there working on the exercises he knew he needs to move on to other exercises. Good work everyone.

Really excellent videos! I’ve been riding for years, but have always been bad at slow maneuvers. I’ve been practicing some of the techniques you mention to get better. One big problem I’ve been used to is never using the rear brake when going slow. After watching your videos I’m now reconditioning myself to use the rear brake instead of the front at slow speeds.

    • @BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle

Thank you very much Jesse! You are not alone with that. Most riders rear brake pads are like brand new and they've had their motorcycle for years.😂 But I'm extremely proud of you for making the decision to recondition yourself. We're always learning brother.👍🏾

Thanks De'Monte! Trust me man I know and I do try to make them as short as possible. However, because I know there may always be content that benefits some, but not all, to ensure nothing helpful is left out, I include everything that I feel may be beneficial. The benefit is everyone has the ability to move past anything they don't want/need to see.
I also know that people will sit down to watch a movie for 2+ hours for entertainment purposes only. I believe these videos provide education as well as a little bit of entertainment.
Lastly, the benefit of TH-cam is you can watch videos in intervals and when you come back to them, your place is saved.😊👍🏾

A lot of people don't understand about turning their head, thinking that just turning your eyeballs will get the job done. For those, it might be a goodness to have a camera mounted to your helmet - just to show them where your *head* is pointed. Either that, or somehow get a 360° camera and show the forward looking angle in one portion of the screen and another portion of the screen showing your head - just to show where you're looking as you approach a turn. Just some thoughts. And, yes, I know that all takes more $$.
