    I bought one of these in silver last week. My daily round trip driving is less than 30 miles a day, so far I haven't used any gasoline. I have a Level II in my garage, so I can recharge each night in less than 2 hours. Car is VERY quiet while running in EV mode. This vehicle also qualifies for a $7500 federal tax credit. I don't know if I'd say it is ugly, but it sure does look odd.

      I bought my silver clarity last Dec---yes it is ugly---but it has become my main vehicle! Just remember to keep it in sport mode so you have the extra battery and ICE power. I now get around 53 miles on EV ( southern Cali so very little heater use).I would spend a few bucks and buy the aftermarket front floor mats as the Honda mat doesn't cover the bench where your heel sits.

      make sure you do eventually burn some of the gas so it will not go bad and turn into some lawn mower gas!

    Have been driving a Clarity PHEV since last October. I live in upstate NY and the battery range will change based on the temperature. I have had range be as low as 28 miles to 48 miles. With my daily commute at about 24 miles, that still gets me back and forth without using the gas engine during the coldest days. Still, even if I need the engine, I am using way less gas then my previous vehicle. The ride and comfort is a bonus compared to the Volt which I was also considering at the time.

      Do they make a battery heater for the Clarity? They do for the Prius. That keeps the battery at a normal level of performance in cold weather.

    I got my 2018 Clarity PHEV in March 2019 (new). I absolutely LOVE this car! Highly recommend!
    Current tank of gas, I have 3/4 gas left and have 1000 miles on this tank. Sure I am charging, but that only costs me about $15-30 a month to fully charge daily. Great car!
    *update* same tank, now I have 1/4 tank left and at 2802 miles on this tank of gas. 😍

    Yes, after 5 months I absolutely love it. I was picking between this, model 3 and RAV4 hybrid. I got the best deal on Clarity, so I went with it. For the next gen, I hope they will make it a true hatchback like Stinger and Panamara, add tire pressure sensors, add lane departure warning lights on both mirrors instead of one side camera.

    Great video!
    I bought my Honda clarity back in December 2018 and absolutely love it. Best car I’ve ever owned. If you’re in the market for a plug-in hybrid vehicle this is the car to buy. For the touring model, I paid $38,000 out the door (with tax, license, dealer prep, window tint, etc. all included). After the $7500 tax credit my final cost was $30,500.
    I live in Phoenix Arizona (very little use of the heat or AC so far) and the car fairly consistently shows a 58 to 62 mile range after charging all night. My average daily commute is 35 to 40 miles per day so I drive in electric mode all the time (at a cost of about $.50 per day). I have not taken any long trips yet.
    At 2500 miles I had only used 1 gallon of gas. So the way I see it… I’m getting 2500 miles to the gallon! LOL
    Note: If you drive in the electric mode all the time like I do… The onboard computer periodically starts the gasoline motor to ensure that this engine is functioning properly and so you don’t end up with stale gas in the tank at the end of the year.
    After four months of ownership and 4000 miles on the vehicle I’ve used 2 gallons of gas (7 gallon tank) so I guess my gas mileage has now dropped 2000 miles to the gallon.

      Very interested in one. Would you mind sharing how the tax credit is applied? Immediate alongside purchase? or do you have to wait to file your tax returns? Did you have to finance the whole 38k? Thanks in advance

      1. Tax credit
      This is a federal tax credit which means you have to wait to get the money back when you file your taxes.
      Important: You will definitely want to do some research on this credit to see if YOU qualify for receiving the full $7500. .
      The entire credit MUST be taken in the first year after you purchase the vehicle .
      (Some federal tax credits allow you to spread the credit over a number of years if you don’t qualify for taking the full credit during the first year. This one does not. If you do not qualified for taking the entire credit in the first year you lose that portion of the credit you don’t qualify for.)
      It’s important to understand that you must have a tax obligation of at least $7500 or you will not be able to take the full credit.
      Most people find income taxes very difficult to understand. You need to understand this one or you might find that you only qualify to get $100 or $1000 or??? back. Again… This is a tax “credit“ which means it’s a credit against what you owe the federal government in taxes. Look at your last tax return. Find the total tax obligation you had during that year. Was it $7500 or more? If so you most likely qualify for the full $7500. If (for example) you only had a tax obligation of $1200, then that will be the maximum credit you will receive for purchasing this vehicle.
      I know it might seem confusing but you don’t want to be surprised and find that you don’t get the money back you’re expecting.
      2. Financing
      Growing up I was taught that you don’t borrow money to buy a car. You only buy a car that you can afford. I know I’m in the minority with this thinking.
      You might want to check out Christian financial advisor Dave Ramsey on his TH-cam channel regarding this subject.
      All of that being said… I saved my money and paid cash for this vehicle.
      If you do finance this vehicle, I would recommend you research the subject before going to the dealer. Go to a couple credit unions and find out what they would charge you to borrow the amount of money necessary to buy this car. Then when you go to the dealer you can make comparisons and know if the financing they are offering you is a good deal. There’s a lot of excellent videos on the Internet on how to save money financing your vehicle.
      3. Do your research!
      I spent nine months researching the Honda clarity and researching how to get the best car deal possible. Car dealers are not known for being the most honest profession. I spent hours researching how to beat the car dealer at their own game.
      Financing is one of the most profitable income sources for the dealership. Their goal is to focus only on your monthly payment while distracting you from the actual interest rate and the term of the loan. This will cost you thousands of dollars in the long run.
      4. More free advice
      Knowledge is power… The more you know and the more time you spend prior to the purchase means more money in your pocket.
      Don’t buy more than you can afford. I bought the touring edition but you can save thousands of dollars by buying the standard Honda clarity.
      Don’t rush the car buying process . This most likely will be one of the most expensive purchases you make in your life.
      Don’t buy from the first dealer. I went back-and-forth between multiple dealers until I got the deal I wanted. I was in control… They were not. Be prepared to walk away if you don’t get the deal you want. I ghosted the dealers and they dropped their prices. Try to take emotion out of the purchase and think of it as a business transaction.
      Remember… The car salesman is not your friend, he wants as much money from you as he can get.
      Contact a “car broker“ in your area and see if they can save you any money. You pay them a fee for handling the car purchasing process. They typically will guarantee that they will save you more money than their fee. In my case, I negotiated a better deal (by almost $2000) then the professional car buyer.

      Yes… If you’re referring to the highbeams that automatically switch to low beams when a car approaches. Although I have no experience using this feature since I’ve only driven in the city so far. No long road trips.

    Really nice, I would’ve bought it if it was a sportback/hatchback with more cargo space, I agree with you, if the back wheel flat line cover was lower would’ve looked better, but the overall side profile of this car really reminded me of Citroen CX, one of the most famous cars of its time. Interior is cool except the touch screen looks like someone just glued a iPad onto the dash afterwards.

    Dude, you are a dinosaur if this is the first hybrid review. I've been driving a hybrid Volt since 2013, and averaging 144 MPG and 40 MPC with high reliability and low maintenance. It's quiet and silky smooth, too, so you can really hear the Bose sound system. No range anxiety as well. BTW, what's all that awful noise at the beginning of the video?

    I hate that center console that kills my knee when I rest it against it. That manta ray shape has go to go! The other failure was not including a lift back, which makes the Chevy Volt more versatile. Try putting a 65" TV in a Clarity like you can with a Volt. It also makes a lot of droning when the gas engine and CVT kicks in, which is not pleasant. On electric motor only, it's quieter. Otherwise, it's a nice car and roomier inside than a Volt. I'll wait for Gen2. Forghettabout the EV Clarity; it's got only 90 miles of EV range. Why bother?

    Great Review! Just love your energy! Love this car! Love all the tech stuff. The only thing I wish they would put in there is self charging for your phone. I know the accord has that and I believe the civic does too. For being electric you think they would have put that added bonus in there, instead of the USB ports. All in all great video! Good job 👍🏻

    And one thing I will mention, I drive on all EV on the highway and in my hilly home town. You can accelerate fast, but there is an area on the speedometer area that kicks in the gas engine, stay under that.. you can do all ev. The other is if you accelerate hard and push past a “click” on the accelerator pedal, it will kick in the gas engine.

    I don't think fossil fuels are ever "going to disappear" (0:55). Fossil fuels are just too energy efficient. However, the pollution they create is destroying our world as we know it, so we have got to move a large portion of energy usage to other means of power. Our personal vehicles are obvious prime candidates for conversion to other fuel sources.
    Can you imagine a world in which virtually every passenger vehicle produces zero emissions or very close to it, produces no combustion odors or noise?
    Our streets and our highways would be so quiet, a whole level of griminess that we've just come to accept for 120 years as normal would be gone. Our air would be so much cleaner and clearer.
    What a better world that would be!

    Great channel, the back half of this car is really hard to look at. So much styling is sacrificed for aerodynamics and gas savings. Rear tire area?!?!? yikes!!

      btw, I’d “zonk” those fake vents too, haha... fake vents, fake exhaust tips and piano black plastic trims are simply the worst trends in cars right now. Keep up the great work.
      Also, if possible, try and do a comparative review between the 2019 Civic Sport (CVT) vs the 2019 Forte S (Premium Package w/LED headlights). No one has done that yet on TH-cam, and so it’d definitely get stellar views.

    Last year, I test drove the Honda Clarity and it is much improved over the Insight but we bought two, plug-in hybrids in 2016. The first, an end-of-lease, 2014 BMW i3-REx, remains our primary and a great ride. The second, the backup 2017 Prius Prime is being traded in for a Tesla Model 3. We'll keep the BMW as backup for the Tesla.

    Joe, on the F1 cars, isn't their energy recovery system known as KERS? Which now turns my wheels to asking, how about a review of some of the different F1 cars, current F1 cars. But I suppose not too many teams would let you get up close and personal to their ground rockets. Hey, I had to come up with something. You FINALLY got around to my Ridgeline request, so I'm now satisfied, but bored.
    As to this Clarity, I'm not really clear. What's with the chrome badge on the passenger side of the trunk? "Plug In?" Really? Aargh!
    Sorry, but electric cars just don't do it. But I do like electric when it comes to my Lionel trains and my golf cart.
    As to an alternative fuel, I'm all for it. I'm working on converting my Yugo to run on BS. No matter where you travel to, it's free for the asking.

    Definitely a hybrid for Honda fanboys, I'd prefer the Mitsubishi outlander phev be or Subaru Crosstrek phev, but that's just more practical for the north east where I'm living... Great review as always.

    Good info! when you say if you step on the pedal it would use the gas power like any other hybrid. Is there an Only EV mode where you use electric only and won't use gas even if you speed up?

      Tienlinhho - This is according to my 2018 Clarity PHEV: usually by default the vehicle will accelerate in EV mode usually until the power meter reaches the “white” area. Putting the vehicle into Sport mode intermittently uses EV and the engine during each drive (which is what I usually have the vehicle set to). Any questions, please ask, since I’ve got some time to answer during this unique situation or world is experiencing. 🙏🏾

    I really like this Honda Clarity and I think this was a great, honest review. I have owned a Chevy Volt for 5 years and I'm happy with the car. However, if I was given the choice between these two vehicles in 2014 I would have picked the Honda Clarity. A friend of mine has asked me about PHEV vehicles because he's in the market. I'm going to suggest he looks at this review and buy the Honda Clarity. Another thing is that Chevrolet/GM was never fully committed to the Volt. But I think Honda is fully committed to the Clarity and that means fully committed to the happiness of its customers.

    With this car you don't bother with range anxiety if you run out of battery, the engine will kick in just fill it up

    I've had a Clarity for 4 years now, and I've discovered that the "Sport" mode enables one-pedal driving; in other words, regenerative braking is automatic when the gas pedal is released. And the braking level is adjustable with the left-hand paddle just to the rear left of the steering wheel. It remembers the level set. I love this car. I love this car.
    80% of my mileage is in town, so I use very little gas. Except when it's very cold (I live in Quebec City, where winter temperatures can exceptionally reach -32 Celsius). Below -10, it starts the gas engine. Getting back to the electric motor, there's a trick. At a red light, when the engine is warmed up, you turn off the car and 30 seconds later, you turn it back on and the electric motor comes on. Over 4 years, I used 30% of the petrol I would have used with a Honda Accord. That leaves $1600 in my pocket for, 1400km a year. At 60,000km, my brake discs and pads are 20% worn. The regeneration motor does 75% of the braking. The savings on the brakes cover the cost of oil changes and additional tire costs. It's a comfortable, practical and economical car.
    When I travel, it runs as a hybrid. Before I leave, I charge the battery. I let it drain during the journey (300km). This reduces fuel consumption to around 4.5 litres per 100km for this trip. That's about 25% to 30% less than a Honda Accord, even though my car weighs 1,000 kilos more than the Accord.

    Hi: can you do a video on Accessory mode? I want to be able to sit at a level 2 and sit in my car, listen to the radio, charge my car, have the heater on full blast. How do I get in and out of accessory mode? I want to charge the car while having the dash board powered. And after charge, how do I get out of accessory mode? Can you go to a level 2 and show us the accessory mode while charging and then getting out of accessory mode? I have trouble on both counts: I can't get in easily; then, I can't get out of it w/o turning the whole car off and back on. It isn't as simple as not braking while pressing. That doesn't work smoothly or consistently. thx.

      Get a Chevy Volt. Used car prices on them and new are awesome. I own a 2014 Volt and a 2016 Volt. 16 Volt on great days gets me around 60 miles per charge. And when driving in Electric the moter will not run like the Clarity does. On good days my 14 will get me around 38 miles on a charge.

    I wish you had also covered how many airbags it has, whether its sun visor has a vanity mirror with a light or not, whether it has a spare tyre, what kind of electric charger comes with it, what functions can be performed through its key case, how much ground clearance it has, what kind of infotainment system it has etc... For someone looking at this review for buying it , these are missing points worth a lot of value. THANKS

    It doesn't gave the electric range of the Chevy Volt I bought, also in 2019. It's a car that's built so well that GM had to discontinue it for lack of profit

    why do these stupid PHEV cost so much? you can get a 30 EV mode mile range prius prime from 27k? so like 23k post credit? with lane keep and adaptive cruise standard
    this thing is kicking it at 33.5k and I guess gets 7.5 credit down to 26k vs 23k .
    the batteries only cost some 200$/kwh now.. chevy volt replacement is at 250$/kwh as of 2018
    the subsidy is 500$? every kwh they add the car gets 300$ CHEAPER? every system is there already just need more battery cells
    toyota could put another 9kwh into the prius prime to get some 70 miles of range and it should get CHEAPER not more expensive due to the subsidy. would be some 20k post credit
    vs this thing at 26k post credit. 30% higher than what it should be

    Your style is more stylish than the car. Sadly, Honda didn’t make this beautiful in an aesthetic way. Instead it is practically beautiful. I plan on getting one and mine will look like a freaking race car when I am done.

    I prefer the Volt. The hatchback is better for storage, it's range is 7 miles more, faster acceleration, shorter, has volume knob, and the infotainment system is much more responsive.
    Though, the Honda does have better rear passenger room, is a true 5 seater, rear a/c vents, better rear visibility, lower profile shifter, and a sunglasses holder.
    They both could use lumbar support seats.

    The touring model in the video is approx $37000 MSRP. The standard trim has no suede leather rather the same color PU-ish material, and no leather steering cover, MSRP approx $34000.

    So if someone drives all the time in EV mode due to the size of the battery and short distances then gasoline will get useless and damage the ICE motor. Unless the car burns some gasoline from time to time to avoid degradation of the fuel.

      In Cali, I can take an advantage of a parking spot and free of charge at shopping center or designated area. It’s free for now..., it’s all benefits having one.

      We charge 100% at home using our roof solar. On sunny days the solar fully charges the car (and powers the house). On cloudy days the grid supplies the power. I figure it's cheaper to drive in EV mode until gas is less than $1/gallon.

    This powertrain in a Honda CRV would be selling like hot cakes while in this unpractical Clarity sedan especially with Honda habit for aggressive ugliness in design is definitely keeping sales. In fact Honda like Toyota do not belive in battery EV technology and still want hydrogen fuel cell technology to win so they might desing ugly unpractical cars on purpose to avoid promoting too much battery technology.

    is the only function or the engine to run the generator or does it have a CVT?
    you spent 20 min telling us how it looks, but left a basic locomotion fact unmentioned!
    apparently, you can't choose to run on engine only.
    I heard it takes 2.5hrs of 220v @ 20amps to fully charge. assuming $0.10/kWhr, that's $1.10 for ~30miles.
    with gas at $2.20, that's like ~60mpg
    how much gas does it take to fully charge the batteries? that's key to knowing if this car makes sense.
    tree hugging doesn't pay the bills!

    Considering getting a preowned clarity as a back up to our Chevy Bolt EV. I drive over 100 miles on a good day, sometimes 200. We owned a Chevy Volt for a year and sold it because it uses the gasoline engine to warm up the car on cold days and our winter range for electric only mode was only around 20 miles - ridiculous. Might as well have a regular hybrid. Until our state wakes up in the 21st century and installs chargers at rest stops like the rest of the free world, we’ll be stuck with abominations like these. I want to know the mechanics of this vehicle - one reviewer says it automatically switches to gas when accelerating over 50 mph so can you select electric only mode for highway to override that?? Makes me think it’s only efficient for in city driving. My regular round trip commute is 100 miles highway.

    I just bought mine. I think it checks off all the boxes. I have been Ford Hybrid certified for years but this vehicle pushed the limits. I'm over the looks. It just works.

The dealship here isnt even getting one so i am probable looking at 2 months unless they can track one down at another dealer.

      New age Justice - The full Electric version, unfortunately. The hydrogen model doesn’t have very many available hydrogen stations worldwide, and the PHEV version (which I am currently driving) offers flexibility with EV and gas options.

    A lot of good info. Vast majority is accurate and useful to anyone considering this car. Does miss some things that an owner will experience. I've owned mine for 9 months. I'm still happy , in spite of some detractors. Would buy this car again. Now the things that irritate new owners [or only those experiencing the car will discover]. Using a charging station is unlikely with a 47+/- EV-range, then HV capacity. Would be good for someone who can charge at work or some regular place they commute to and spend time. Makes no sense to loose use of car and pay cost for only 40-50 miles of range. Just use one more gallon of gas. The mix works wonderfully for my use which is within range almost all days; kick into HV mode only for trips. We've added gas only 3-4 times in 9 months. Fully charges over night when car is idle anyway. The safety feature are not as good as competitors; Toyota and luxury brands are years ahead. Lane keep assist works much of time, but how can I use if 10% or the [50%] when it actually engages it fails. Too often I experience crossing a line, then it tells me I left my lane. This while system is to keep me in my lane. I'd be in hospital or dead if i relied on this. I'd call this alpha testing, not even Beta. Also, controls and electronics are not intuitive AND Honda provides inadeequate instruction. Way inferior for today's standard for a consumer products company. Lot's of trial and error with no help from Honda. My dig: Honda CEO announced decision to outsource electronics/safety features in summer 2018. He waited 3+ years too long. Just behind on this front. Again, the basic car and running gear technology are nice and worth the disappointments.

      krenar spahiu - Referring to my 2018 Clarity PHEV: the left side offers to fill up with gas, and the right side offers to charge the vehicle via Level 1 or Level 2 EV charging via standard J1772.
