- *"The Making of a Mural: A Step-by-Step Journey to Painting the Rose City Art Gallery Mural"*
Join me on an exclusive behind-the-scenes adventure as I bring my hand-painted mural to life at the Rose City Art Gallery in Tyler, Texas. From rough sketches and color comp to the final brushstrokes, here's a behind-the-curtain look at my process (or one of them).
In this video, you'll see:
• Begin with scribbles on the wall and take a picture of the wall
• Create a scale transparent overlay of the scribbles and tape it to my color sketch (comp)
• Using the color comp for reference
• Draw directly onto the wall using sharpies and the scribbles as guides to keep track of proportions
As painting begins, I'll share:
• My technique of working from hardest areas first, saving easier sections for later (when I'm tired)
• Constantly referencing my color comp to ensure accuracy and making notes about colors, to-do's, and people met along the way
• Painting everything except lettering - which is saved until the end
To create lettering:
• Make a paper pattern of the lettering
• Use a projector to blow up artwork onto clay-coated craft paper from Home Depot
• Draw on the paper with a Sharpie, and trace with a small perforating wheel to punch millions of tiny holes in the outline
• Sand the back of the pattern to remove any tiny paper burrs
• With the help of my new buddy, Nowell, we roll out the pattern and tape to wall
• Transfer the design onto the wall using an old sock filled with chalk line dust (a pounce bag) and pounce the design onto the wall
A little touch up, sign my name, and apply two coats of graffiti-proof clear coat from Sherwin Williams, and Voilà! - one finished mural.
