The 2 auxiliary slots in the envirosuit are for modules that are bought in the workshop. The popular ones I've seen are for movement speed, carry weight and seeing the world bosses. The modules stack so 2 speed modules is possible for example. You could bring say 2 speed modules, 2 carry weight modules and 1 world boss module. You want to move fast and see the bosses? No problem. Move fast and carry more? again no problem. More inventory slots? A Patcher II module gives 5 slots. Mix and match based on what you want to do. Read what they do carefully, so you are sure you are getting what you want! They cost 75 ren to research and 50 ren to craft for the cheapest. The expensive modules also require exotics (25 - 35 research and 10 craft).
I think Icarus was designed for these mission type things since it gave the open world genre something different to do , it gave a time limit to do a task given, it allowed you to go in with already built up levels and techs so each time you went in , you had to go to somewhere different and strategize, it took me around 4 hrs to do the vertigo mission to open the desert area but I enjoyed it because it forced me to do something I wouldn't do ,plus the game is updating every week with new stuff. I think most of the time you play so many open worlds is because they are almost just copies of each other whereas Icarus took those traits and put a mission timed based spin on it
Everybody goes for the weapon upgrades, but for my money the most useful enhancement is the Melee Attack Speed attached to Pickaxe, Axe and Knife. These are the tools you use most often in the game, so a small investment goes a very long way.
Also a tip on polar bears, you can kite them really easily , if you let them push you like normal bears , the will swipe at the last second, so if you run into them as they are about to swipe , they miss and you can turn around and shoot them and repeat by going into them and dodge last second
The Prospects were initially designed to ease you into Icarus and provide tech tree rewards as well as Ren and exotics while you levelled up. Open World has since shortcut this so now you can drop into the full world at level 0 if you want. However, you can now also drop your character on multiple prospects simultaneously. So you don't have to leave your Open World as such, just choose a new prospect to send your guy on, collect the rewards (e.g. Cave Bow blueprint), and your character in the Open World will automatically inherit it. The Cave Bow is considerably easier to craft early in game than the Recurve Bow, so it's worth doing the prospect mission at some point to unlock it.
