  • Sergei Lyapunov - Transcendental etude Op. 11 No. 10
Performed by Marco Rapetti: • Lyapunov : Lezghinka ...
Lyapunov wrote this opus as a tribute to Franz Liszt; he composed 12 etudes for the keys Liszt had left out in his Transcedental studies.
Lezghinka was inspired by Islamey and was therefore subtitled "style Balakirev". Balakirev got his inspiration for Islamey after a trip to the Caucasus, where the Lezghinka dance originates from.
Islamey heavily inspired Lyapunov, who went to St. Petersburg in 1885 to seek Mily Balakirev, becoming the most important member of Balakirev's latter-day circle. Balakirev took Lyapunov under his wing, and oversaw his early compositions as closely as he had done with the members of his circle during the 1860s, now known as The Five. Balakirev remained the dominant influence in the creative life of Lyapunov.

People should realize that Balakirev's Islamey (the first theme) is actually based off of a type of Lezgin people's folk dances, or more specifically, Lezginka.

This is why I love etudes. They are some of the most unique sounding pieces in all the repertoire. And this etude is a perfect example of such.

… and why is this not famous? Maybe because it is almost impossible to play for 80% of todays pianists?

It's not that bad - it's EXTREMELY well written and highly pianistic. It's comparable with the average Liszt or Rachmaninoff Etude, and not near as difficult as some of their most demanding ones.

@@seanfogarty5559 I mean i had really bad time memorizing this composition, but I agree with you that it is pianistic to play. Hardest parts for me were 1:52 and 5:08.... prok first sonata was more difficult for me.
