Additional comments: [TW panic attacks] Regarding the section at 37:08, I do feel that I was perhaps a bit too harsh about John - again, as I said in the video, I immediately sympathised with Aaron's side of the situation because I could really strongly relate to him, and it's pretty upsetting in any scenario to see someone with genuine anxiety just being quite callously dismissed, it rung a little too much like 'you're just overreacting' and I do still believe that, but it's also fair to say that it's a stressful environment for everyone involved, emotions are just generally running wild so people are probably reacting in ways they wouldn't normally. Plus of course, the way the show is edited can be potentially misleading - John has said in interviews that Aaron did ask questions about his job more often/regularly than the edit showed, so again, something may have been lost in translation. Speaking of being lost in the edit, I feel it's only fair to say that when Theo said that Imran 'needs to work on showing real emotion' it was in response to Imran calling Theo's emotions 'forced' - Theo is someone who has spoken about being bullied for his personality and for being gay, so him having a strong reaction to that statement is warranted. John has also spoken about him and his career sometimes being questioned/judged/not taken seriously so this might be another reason why he was very emotional about this. Especially in John's case, I don't think this excuses the way he behaved towards Aaron (like, especially after the Round Table, when Aaron was *clearly* freakin' upset and just trying to understand what happened and John was still shouting and getting angry with him) but it does help to explain it, I guess? I thought this was context I wish I'd added in the video itself but this will have to do. Best Traitors: Amanda, Wilf Best Faithful: Kieran, Hannah(?), Aaron(?), Amos, Ivan, Fay Also just realised I didn't talk at all about Claudia! I really like her (she's pretty much impossible to dislike) and I think the sort of, mean-ish personality she was going for took some time to feel more natural, but by the end it was really working for me. Having recently watched the US version of the show though, I want her and Alan Cumming to be a presenting duo, that would be so iconic XD
Hello to everyone who is discovering this video in 2024 - thank you for watching!! 💖 (additional additional comments: I don’t feel bad for John any more lol)
@@bethanysingsmrs849 Yeah, + forgetting stuff you'd done recently goes with ADHD as well, so him asking the same question multiple times didn't mean he was trying to grill him
Yeah, John was in court earlier this year for attacking staff at a restaurant after being told to keep his voice down swearing repeatedly in conversation. There's something off about him. Great video essay, I loved being able to re-live the series with your superb narration, weaving the narrative, and then perfectly summing up the wholesome nature of the show and why I love it. I'm going to grade it an A-. Mainly because it's been like 20 years since I watched Death Note and I can remember diddly squat about all those references. The challenges for me, they offer a period of time where the players turn from turning on each other into working as a group. Even if they can be a bit dull sometimes, the shift from suspicion and accusations to wholesome teamwork, and then back to suspicion is a dynamic I enjoy, and is part of what makes the show work. (In no small part because if they didn't have them, the contestants would be having emotional breakdowns by the halfway stage...)
Love this video! I really appreciate the balanced take you have on the show and that while you are passionate about its great moments: Tom revealing Alex is his girlfriend was amazing, you do air the criticisms you have of it like the missions being kind of boring and how it can at times show some of the worst in people because the structure means there is no real hard evidence so we have Nicky being the first banishment... for not raising a glass?! The use of L and Light Yagami was brilliant. Excited for a season 2 video if you decide to do one! EDIT: Also appreciate the Catherine music used at 2:45:11
I hate season 2 since many of the traitors were males and season 1 could’ve been better if Amanda voted for Will instead of Alyssa or Alex didn’t reject being a traitor
I first saw that this was over 3 hours and thought, "why would I watch this whole recap of a show I've already watched?" But I did, and I didn't regret it at all. In fact, I'm here now for a rewatch
11:50 i think the missions act as a moment of catharsis for the audience in a sense. If the entire show was tense and filled with traitor based activities then it would all get too much. Yes all the discussions and round tables are the best bit but they are special because we only get a limited number of them. If we had opportunities for traitor finding in the missions then it would make the other conversations have less weight to them. I think the challenges are the weakest part of the show but I think it needs that to make its best moments even more impactful than they already are. Thats just my opinion it was a great vid btw :)
In my opinion, He didn't deserve the win anyway after betraying and throwing Amanda and Alyssa under the bus when they literally defended him when he became a suspect
Super late to this, but the only reason the traitors didn’t win is because of their own actions against their follow traitors. All the way through, the only time a traitor is discovered is because they are called out by another traitor. The informed few let themselves down here.
This video is perfect tbh. Truly an underrated channel. Also it's hilarious how quickly the bro code crumbled because of a single misremembered conversation. The generous sprinkling of Death Note memes killed me 😂
Thank you for this very cool and interesting deep dive of this season! Must have been a lot of work 😅 Keeping my fingers crossed, that you will do this for season 2 as well! 🙃
I accidentally came across the excellent video. Having never watched the programme at all, I thought your commentary was pitched at just the right level. You did an excellent job of letting me discover the programme for myself and I can say that I think I would rather have watched your video than the original TV series! Job well done.
This was legit one of the best vids i've watched on TH-cam (and i spend far too much time on this damn site xD) happy to see you're working on a S2! Also has given me a massive craving to rewatch Deathnote, so thanks for that aswell!
I think it's also interesting to compare to the first season of Big Brother - none of the contestants really knew what they were getting into or the massive THING it was going to be outside so their reactions were more natural, there was the HUGE drama with Nasty Nick (the red breakfast doesn't really compare to a cheating attempt but it was still a ball of chaos that can't be repeated once people know it COULD happen), and you could even draw parallels between Aaron and Craig as Nice Guy winners.
definitely! the comparison can be made with many shows i guess - in the first seasons, you can at least guarantee the contestants are joining because of an interest in the game/concept and their reactions to things are far more genuine. season 2 onwards there’s more chance of people being part of it because they want to be on tv, or want to be the one involved in x drama or y scandal. lightning in a bottle!! ⚡️ thanks for watching!
Excellent video, watched this over the past few days and it’s a really good reminder of what I loved so much about the first season of The Traitors, the emotional core of it is just so wonderful. I hope this vid continues to get seen by more and more people cause the effort put into it is very visible, can’t imagine how long it’d take to make a 3+ hour video lol. I’d love to see a video on Season 2 also at some point, cause while Season 1 was incredible, I don’t think Season 2 will ever be able to truly leave my mind Also yeah fuck John lmao
I can't help but feel that the Traitors having a secret task would have helped make them feel more tense and built to it (think kiss of death, just no murder each time).
I just want to say, this is an amazingly written, produced, and edited video, I can't believe you don't have 10,000 times the subscribers you have, because you really deserve it. I enjoyed this vid sooo much, the humours great, even though the up and down anxiety of it has left me with a tummy ache xD Thank you so much for making it, I reeeeeally hope you do a vid on season 2!!
This is excellent!! I’ve watched all English language seasons of the traitors (UK, US, Aus, NZ, and CA) and am super excited for the s2 Canada finale next week!
This video was a DELIGHT … why are there not more deep dives into this show! Also, wish they showed the faithfuls finding out who the traitors are in the main show … surely that’s like a huge part of the story?! Would be juicy stuff

Excellent video! Can’t wait to see the series 2 breakdown you mentioned in the comments, never mind your thoughts on the Kas-framing if you do a video for series 3 in time!
I hope you do a video about season 2 cos i honestly think it was so much more logical abd tactical. Not iust the traitors, but also the faithful. The whole sheild trick alone was so damn smart, and even if the faithful had the wrong theories, they were at least based on real facts and had an absolutely plausable conclusion. I so enjoyed season 2, it fels much more even.

44 mins, really enjoying this so far. IIRC Maddy was very dismissive of Aaron's panic attack. Everyone loves Maddy, but it never gets mentioned, as well as her being 95% wrong in her claims of traitors outside of 1. I like Maddy, but it always left me a bit weirded out her fandom lol. Also Theo on Imran, and Theo when banished, going further in time was far too much and offended by anyone mentioning him. It did my head in. TW ADHD and Asperger This is an awesome review and good to see in the new year / encouraging me to pick up my own review for one piece. Now - quickly on section around 44min is excellent - I despise John - but I actually *like* his reaction to Aaron’s neurodivergence because it is (sadly) real that people may perceive the inquisition of people with adhd as suspicious in some way.
