Put some oil in and turn it before you fit it, as long as it's wet inside it will suck. Once all back together you can fill the pump through the oil filter. I showed this in one of the videos.
Hello I want buy new crankshaft for citroen c5 x7 with same engine ... Which seller is good or no. I find on ebay APEX from.enfland and on Allegro Inny (motus) but nobody tell my if its good stuf or made from mud. Thx for answer ... Vladimir from Slovakia
Very informational videos these are. Have helped quite a bit. One question though, would anyone know if the cam chain could be replaced with the body on? Apparently the injection pump belt can be, but I really can't see how on a LR4. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
DR Ostly don’t quote me on this but I’m sure US gallons are roughly 3.75liters and Uk gallons are 4.54 ...! Not 100% sure as we use mainly metric with about the last 16 years in Ireland!
Hi Steve with thanks to your videos, I bought a discovery 4 with a broken crank on No2 web stripped it built it with your help now runs sweet as a nut well pleased, so here’s a thing I went out and bought a manual discovery 3 with a broken crank for the wife to tow her horse box same place No2 web, well it’s going back together till setting up the crank timing tdc, with the auto using the flex plate and tool that was fine is there a special tool for the manual as the tool kit I have the same as yours and the same locking tool it doesn’t fit there seems to be a place to lock on the dual mass flywheel but at 180 deg’s there’s another t shaped slot any suggestions please cheers Derek
The manual uses a different timing pin. If you have the kit then there should be both types in it. The tool for a manual has an offset pin on it. You've probably got the crank 180 degrees out. They don't time at tdc.
Salve!!! Grazie!!!
I can't really put a price on it without knowing parts costs. It will be an expensive job as it's very labour intensive, an absolute pig of a job with the engine in. Prices will vary depending on the labour rate of your chosen garage. Timing belts will also need to be repaced.
@@pistonbroke Thanks Steve, I have asked a garage to replace my timing belts so I guess this is the best time to have his done as well. The parts are quite cheap but I was still quoted 1500 just for the timing belt.
Steve brill video on the 3.0 just two things can I ask please torque plate to crankshaft in seems to me that this could be fitted on in any position ie there’s no dowel to give the correct position! I mean when you put the locking tool in how do you know that the crank is in the correct position for timing up the locked camshafts or can it only go on in one place because the bolt holes will only line up in a said place , also crankshaft front bottom pulley lock nut is it left or right hand thread as I can’t seem to move/release it cheers derek
Flywheel/drive plate will only go on one way, two of the holes have different spacing so you can't get it wrong. Front pulley bolt is stupidly tight!! I heated the head of the bolt with a blow torch before undoing it. It's normal thread ie. Lefty loosey.
Yeah really! 320 grit, wont do it any harm. Been doing it that way for over 30 years and never had a problem. I don't know anyone that does it any other way.
So if you were replacing a head gasket, you'd strip the engine completely just to clean the mating faces? I'm not actually sanding it, all I'm doing is cleaning the remnants of old gasket and sealant. Once clean, blow it off with an airline. There's no need to strip the valves and pistons out.
Skimming the mating faces takes metal off. If it's not warped then you shouldn't skim the surfaces, especially the block. Being a diesel, the pistons protrude above the block at TDC, skimming any metal from the block will make the pistons protrude further. I've had diesel heads skimmed in the past and afterwards there was contact between the pistons and valves. I don't like skimming diesel heads unless I really really have to.
Hi Steve, can you help, my friend had a knocking sound, mainly from inside the cab, so he changed his timing and fuel belt, the knocking sound remains. It sounds louder in the cab than outside and when at 1200 rpm. The gear box sounds ok but the sound is higher towards the gear box, any ideas? Thanks
What is the reason the injector pump is timed to the engine, as I thought these have a common fuel rail on each bank? Doesnt the rail regulate fuel pressure to the injectors?
Yeah he is. This one was 2 days work. First part was wednesday (upto the point where i cleaned the sump) and the rest on saturday. Took about 4 hours to clean the sump!
Hi I’ve bought a sport but the previous owner tried doing the timing belt without locking any thing off . Also left the starter motor in place ,is there anyway I can find which is the timing pin hole in the flywheel thanks
These don't time at TDC, they time in a "safe" position. The only way you'll find out is to pin the crank and cams and put the belt on, turn it and see if anything touches. If it locks then you'll have to carefully turn it to pin the next hole and re-time the cams again.
Hi there, really nice videos Steve, good work! 💪 Making a long shot and ask what compression pressure you say is “normal” for the 3.0 tdv6. Got a newly built one from uk and I have 19-21bar when cranking. Really hard running. Thanks! / Rob
gEpWxAqd FsiDseSG The LR system isn’t great. You have to manually Tell it to check the oil. It will never tell u it’s low without asking. They also fail a lot and require engine removal to change
It's even worse with the 4.4 SDV8 engines. There is a design fault whereby the sensor loom tracks the oil to the primary turbo actuator and causes it to go unserviceable. Fortunately, the actuator is now available to purchase on its own. It didn't used to be, resulting in a whole new turbo and actuator assembly having to be purchased to rectify the fault.

16:1 compression ratio so minimum would be 16 bar or 235 psi
Did I see an oil level sensor in the bottom of the sump? I don't think that my Jag 2.7 has one. I wonder if there is a way to retrofit one.
Yes there is a level sensor. The 3.0 has no dipstick. Way too much work to retrofit.
Dip sticks are way better
