    I'm not a chopper guy, I love them original and stock, but this bike is amazing, it's like a time machine! I remember seeing choppers and being around a few that my father's friends had in the mid 70's when i was a kid. Brought back some great memories! Great times!

    The history lesson is the best part of this. It would be awesome to have a video covering the thought process guys went through when they put a chopper together back in the 70s, such as why they did shovel top ends, wanted straight leg frames, etc.

      As far as the shovel top end goes we did that because the engine could breathe better, had better top end oiling systems therefore running cooler and better creating more horsepower. A better running bike if you will. As far as the different frames, front ends and other parts that boils down to individual taste and one's budget. If on a low budget you scrounge up what you can find and make it work. If money wasn't an issue you could get top of the line stuff. Like this bike here, some guys like those long skinny springers and sporty or peanut tanks. But my taste would be to have a wide glide and fatbobs. It was the era of individual expression.

    Owned one in the early 70s. Repainted it rode it everywhere. Before that had a pan head chopped...loved that bike. Had a springer 16" over with a small front wheel...can't remember the diameter of the wheel. But it was a show bike made into an every day ride.

    I have a couple lame-ass videos up on my page of the old-school chopper I'm resurrecting. Talk about a chopper that was "ridden"!!.. When parked on the kickstand, the front tire actually flopped over and rested against the front forks when I got it. The rocker bushings were worn so bad there was almost no brass left in them. The only way I can see this happening is to ride it to that point. Unfortunately, the previous owner is dead and no family member will discuss his very private life with me.

      I remember in late in the 70's I bought a Gary Bang Frame for a 74 Sportster. In Southern Illinois seemed we all rode choppers...had a 54 Pan I really liked with the 6 bend pullbacks! Then a 71 FLH, and your right we tried to make them look old school....well it certainly had to have a kick start! Now today I ride a 98 Heritage Springer with sidecar! I just can't get the old school passion out of my head. The nights as a kid with a Easyrider Mag, looking at a Dave Mann poster....just visualizing me riding down the highway on a chopper!

      Save your money Brother these day you can pick up a damn nice Harley for about 4 to 5 grand not bad not bad at all, and if you not a fat ass like myself, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sporty, yeah I know everyone calls them a chic's bike but that couldn't be further from the truth, the 1200 is bad ass fast and put you a Buell M2 Cyclone engine on one and you've got a simple but badass bike that the big twins can even touch. I go somewhere around 330 Lbs and I was kicking ass on my 1200 Buellster.. However with all the potatoes that I was hailing around I had to go back to the FXR this is just simply a much more comfortable bike for someone of my size.. hell man you can pick up a sporty for about 3 grand, it's a start, so don't let anyone fool you.. it's bet than rice!! ride on BRO..

  • @sportster88
    @sportster88 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with Todd about shovelhead engines being more desirable than knuckleheads in the late '70s. As a kid in the late '60s and early '70s I bought the chopper magazines and the majority of the custom bikes back then were panheads. Knuckles were the most difficult to find and the most gorgeous and coveted engine by bikers. Extended and chromed Harley springers were always the most desirable and beautiful front ends. When I built my first panhead in '79 knuckleheads were already as rare as hen's teeth in the classified sections of the newspapers.

    • @HuntingHarleys
      @HuntingHarleys  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought my 1st Knuckle motor in 1982, $600. The old boys laughed at me saying they buy whole bikes for that, it's just old iron, who wants a Knuckle. Took me almost a year and a half to sell for $800. I thought I was going to die with that motor, a nice 47 FL. Must of been your area. Now if your story is from 1999... Old springers, could not sell them all through the 1980's and 1990's. Again, maybe it was your area. I was in Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, the place to be for custom bikes and bike fashion.

      @@HuntingHarleys First off let me thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
      Now I must say I,m confused ha!.....swear to god at the beginning of the video when the bike can be seen from its right side, looks like (indeed like you stated) the rear wheel it's about 16 inch but the front one seems too tiny, like about 14 inch. I don't know if it's the camera angle or something but all that left me thinking if the builder and/or owner did that on purpose for looks or if their intention was to have a bike difficult to steer by matching that tiny front wheel with such a long fork, as I believe it would be with the aforementioned configuration. But what do I know? You tell me! ha!. Anyways sorry for the long post, it just happens that I like to take the time when watching your videos and pay attention to the details 'cause I have found that is quite interesting watching the grand grand mothers of my harley as you talk about their backgrounds. So I guess that's it! I just wanted to clarify things regarding what I found weird about this bike, which left me (as you can clearly see) so intrigued.
      Again sorry for the loooong post! And thank you so much for your time. Through your videos I have known that you have had problems but I hope you keep the bikes and videos coming, cheers!

      @@CarlosOrtega-hn1qq Been in business since 1981, close enough to say 40 years. Starting this way will NOT brake a kick stand that is in good condition. Strapping a bike down with it on the kick stand sure will, been there done that when I was a youngster learning how to do this. I was schooled by old timers how to start these, dudes who had been riding 30 plus years back when I was a kid in 1981/ 82 era. If they don't know, no one does. At 57, I still have my knees. I've seen people get knee replacements just from starting how your saying to do it. Last, unless you have long legs, straddeling a maching to start it does NOT work. Plus, you have to weigh a lot more then I do. Before you go on with the starting like a girl BS. I had a 10:1 compression 1984 FXST softtail I had customized. I started it this way no problem, at 145 pounds. My 260 pound 6 foot 5 friend, who kicked his bikes your way (irregardless that I wold him not to) could not even kick my motor over. He also got a knee replacement from your method in his late 30's when a just rebuilt pan I sold him backfired and destroyed his knee.
