"BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Israeli warplanes carried out late on Thursday their most intense strikes on south Lebanon in nearly a year of war, Lebanese security sources said, heightening the conflict between Israel and Lebanese armed group Hezbollah amid calls for restraint.
The White House said a diplomatic solution was achievable and urgent, and Britain called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The U.S. is "afraid and concerned about potential escalation," spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told a briefing."

If you attack another country first you don't have the right of self-defense. Hamas, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran attacked Israel first.

Interesting logic. If I punch you in the face and you retaliate, when I hit you again, I am "defending myself."
Look at the history and see who the aggressor is time and time again. Unless you think having the temerity to create your state along the same lines approved by the UN partition plan 6 months prior is somehow aggression. Since then, it is one side aggressing and one side defending themselves. One side would be willing to live in peace, and the other wants the opposition state to cease to exist regardless of size.
Inventing the concept of heritable refugee status (!) is a recipe for unending war, and for some reason, the West humors or even endorses this notion, unique amongst only Palestinian refugees.

Hezbollah’s rockets don’t cause much damage, but that doesn’t mean you ignore them. If someone is constantly throwing rocks at you, even if you can successfully avoid them, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respond.

I watched an interesting take on this on TikTok. Don't know if it is real or not, but it is a better answer than the confusing idea that Isreal is running the show. Israel has made it clear that the goal in Lebanon is to push Hezbollah, now on the border with Israel, about 18 miles further North just beyond the Litani river. The evacuated land would serve as a buffer zone impeding Hezbollah's ability to lob munitions into Israel.
The buffer zone exist right now -- at least in theory -- with real UN troops patrolling the zone as a result of UN resolution 1701, coming in the aftermath of the 2006 Israeli/Lebanese peace agreement. This also points out where the UN's interest lies.
