What Should Happen To Houston's Astrodome? Here's An Idea.

- Among the many conversations about what could become of Houston's historic Astrodome, is a fairly controversial proposal called A-Dome Park.
It's the brainchild of Houston-based architect James Richards and New York-based architect Ben Olschner. See rendering and descriptions of their plan here: adomepark.org/

Here's an idea...
BRING BACK ASTROWORLD!!!!
I wished.my mom tould let it was fun but never went I was born to late
I've called numerous times within the last 10 years recommending that to Houston's city officials and they never respond.
Selena had her last concert there dont tear it down
Blanca Quinonez really?
I love Selena may she rest in peace, but there's way more history before she was even born, that's not an excuse just her concert.
Just cause someone had a concert their doesn't mean they should tear it down🤣🤣 the big reason its staying is cause of sports😂😂
@@mjszn5032 I can tell ur not Hispanic if u just say “idc” like nothing shame on u
(although I don’t even know nun of her songs)
@@yomommabiatch3282 yeah I kinda regret saying what I said
Maybe keep it as a museum as all the greatest games, concerts, etc. Have on the outside the basketball, baseball, soccer games that were held there put up signs and statues, and then on the inside have a stage set for the concert's held there. For instance, Elvis Presley sang there, Selena Quintanilla Perez sang there (three times to be exact)!
and Emilio Navaira lol but I liked Selena best
Fr8Tr9 Gaming & More: I LOVE Selena!!!!😍😍😍especially her last concerts she preformed here in 1993,1994,and the Last 1995 concert
Joseph Menjivar her last concert
Joseph Menjivar don't forget wm 17
Exactly!! I love Selena quintanilla
My dad was one of the first men to work at the very top of the Houston Astrodome because everybody else was afraid to go up there. My mom was pregnant with me when the Astrodome opened
Interesting, but it's basically tearing it down and leaving the frame. I want the dome to look as it did in the 60s and 70s
Sam Mattox It might be too old though. Not all stadiums can stay.
@@no_bitches0621 Tell that to the Romans
That idea actually looks pretty cool and interesting.

The EIGHTH Wonder of the World is ANDRE THE GIANT.
Nah.. no no no no no... it's Andre's GIANT 😂
The ongoing debate over the astrodome boggles my mind. Have you ever seen something marked as a historic landmark be changed into something else or be partially demolished? No! The dome IS a historic landmark that should be PRESERVED. Make it a museum for stadium architecture/history or Houston culture. The dome should be restored and preserved to its original 1965 look, and turned over to the texas historical society to manage.
We appreciate your point of view Lee. The fact is that no stadium the size and scale of the Astrodome that has become obsolete has escaped demolition. Adomepark preserves the iconic form and identity of the dome while celebrating the living structure and the engineering that made it possible. adomepark.org
This is a very interesting idea. It makes a lot of sense.
Great Vision for Houston. Necessary Revitalization for the Astrodome.
THANKS KYNA.
I wish the Houston Astros still played in the astrodome bc If they did play in the astrodome in 2017 they win the world series in it
Seth Bryson but they didn't win in Houston but it could be a practice field
I remember Houston Oilers Houston Oilers when they were on Monday Night Football. Houston has some great fans
Who? The Cheaters???
Selena!
Indoor waterpark? Casino? Why not both?
Indoor waterpark sounds good
Indoor astroworld
The Video left out the deserted Pontiac Silverdome. Very sad how these Stadiums meant something at once. Now. It.s just Rubbles & Dirt.
Thanks adomepark.org
I'm not totally against this idea, but I'd prefer it to become a sports museum. The Astrodome was the first indoor multipurpose sports stadium, so tearing down it's frame and repurposing it is a little disrespectful in my eyes. Still better than just demolishing it though
Thanks great idea adomepark.org
Thanks adomepark.org
Was never lucky 🍀 to get to Houston to see the dome and watch a game, however watched a many of games, over years on Atlanta Braves television and NBC telecast of ole AFL and AFC games from there. Thank you for sharing this. Billy
Thanks.
The first and only indoor rainforest.
I said it first.
Robert Fisher native Houstonian.
They shouldnt tear down the dome because thats where selena quintanilla had her last concert !
Lol who cares? A lot of places where famous singers or bands played their first or last concert have been torn down or entirely rebuilt.
3:18 damn them bike riders could have an accident if no careful lmao

@@jericho.laflare Thanks adomepark.org
They should renovate the insides and make it a Houston sports museum
Sports should always have a place at the ASTROdome.
Don’t tear it down selena had her last concert
FACTSSS
More reason to tear it down
They should tear it down. People come up with the silliest ideas on what to do with it.
This is an interesting rethinking - keeps the essence of the place intact for future generations to enjoy. Turning a structure this size into a museum is just not feasible - far to large to maintain. This concept certainly beats having it razed completely. Only change I'd propose is a grass field on the inside too - would still be able to hold events.
THANK Mitch---adomepark.org

What I will never understand is why do NFL teams seem like they have to have a new standium every 20 or 30 years when college football stadium last forever seems like?
THANKS
this is stupid, don't tear down the Dome.
Links595 I live in Canada. We had a place called Northlands Coliseum. That place meant a lot of things. It was a Hockey Arena. Till the City decided to build a new Arena. Now currently. The Coliseum stands Abandonded.
This is the best thing for it. Fucking spending money on an un-used building because mother fuckers cant forget the day they had hotdogs there with daddy. Or the day Bob Mcgee hit a home run against the New York Knickermen. Shut the fuck up, that's all emotional bullshit. And the architect is right about the Asphalt. there's no use for it, and it does make the surrounding area hotter. Chop all that shit up, leave the skeleton as a reminder of what was once there, and go on with life.
This is a great idea for the dome
@ Thanks Gus Spread the word and check out adomepark.org
Friend of mine played for the Chicago Cubs many years ago and said they would chase rats in the Astrodome clubhouse and corridors and throw baseballs at them. Apparently the joint was a haven for rodents even when in full use.
Thanks adomepark.org
I have so many wonderful childhood memories here don't tear it down and I love this idea
thanks
I like the idea

This is a horrible idea.
This architect complains about a heat island in the parking lot, then proposes to create a new paved heat island inside the structure.
There would be no roof, just framework. So no protection from rain or sun. In Houston. Right.
County engineers have already vetted it and determined that it is technically impossible from an engineering standpoint and if completed would probably cause the collapse of the structure. The steel was not treated to be exposed to the elements. The reason the county has already studied it is that it's pretty much copied from an earlier proposal by UH student Ryan Slattery (a proposal that Houston Public Media previously ALSO gushed over).
The Texas Historical Commission would never allow it, as it would destroy the "historic fabric" now protected under state law. Despite what these architects think, the essence of the Dome is NOT the steel structure alone.
There is already a good county plan for the Dome, and it is being implemented.
Your characterization of the county's new plan is inaccurate. They have pretty much abandoned the park aspect. And the mall part is all possible future development. Your proposal includes more mall-like elements than theirs.
Your proposal is back on the table of the uninformed but with the county it's a non-starter.
Here's a question for you: why don't you just build this new from scratch somewhere else? It would probably cost half as much, would not destroy the essence of a historic icon, and you could scale it up or down, make it an exact replica from Astrodome blueprints or a looser adaptation.
Luis Gonzalez, happy?
@@jadotucker9810 You might not only be reading other's comments and thinking they're mine but also misinterpreting what I'm saying. For example, I have very strong views on paving this place and turning it into a massive, heat-generating, sparse shit hole that looks like every other ever dumped into any city anywhere. There is a real opportunity here to do something beautiful and for the people, not for corporations. If I seem negative, you bet your ass I am on the latter because public spaces should be ours, shaded and beautiful. The concept designs in this clip are gorgeous and everything I myself could imagine and hope for.
WrestleMania X-7
Like the idea as it provides a recreational asset to the city. I enjoy waterparks and have seen how popular they are at Wisconsin Dells. Thought in Minnesota when they torn down Dome it was a missed opportunity to leave an indoor facility for walking, running and bic riding around the concourses as well as indoor facility for baseball and softball. Since this video came out two years ago, curious what the progress has been.
Thanks Ken. The dome is currently being renovated as a kind of indoor park with parking spaces for 1500 cars
It's on the National Register of Historic Places. It can't be 'torn down'. I don't even know if they can make these kinds of alterations. There are already three football stadiums, a baseball stadium and a soccer stadium in the city. So there's no need for more of those. This is something that doesn't exist anywhere else. It would be a site for events, a landmark, a great observation point, and what's wrong with a little more grass and a little less concrete? Why have it just sitting there rotting, when it will NEVER go back to being what it was for its first 40 years?
th-cam.com/video/TESFfscOlzc/w-d-xo.html&t Not correct it can be torn down if it is not financially viable and is a white elephant for the county it will be torn down Please consider supporting our project adomepark.org. Thanks.

My grandpa was at the first game of baseball in astrodome
The Eden Project in Cornwall is a perfect idea of what the dome should be turned into with thousands of visitors going there each year.

Selena Singed at Astrodome Before. Go Check It out On #SelenaVEVO
It's ridiculously stupid that instead of renovating the Astrodome they built a new stadium only steps away from the Astrodome. 350 million dollars wasted
Thanks adomepark.org
Make an indoor Astroworld
Thanks adomepark.org
How about rebuild it back to its roots and we could have the stadium not having another parking lot. This could be a great thing for the dome .
What would protect the structural steel from the wind and rain after the facade has been removed?
Extremely Robust Epoxy Paint. The same paint used on bridges and all exterior steel structures. Thanks for asking and good question.
Please don't do this make the inside a park don't tear it down it's my favorite building ever
I love it
Great idea, love the concert idea for it.
It could be something like post houston.
THANKS.
Great concept but what if you make a mistake and the whole thing falls down you should do something like an amusement park inside of it
What a great idea.
Wow, very interesting

Thanks check out adomepark.org for more details
just keep it and leave it as a tourist attraction of WrestleMania 17. sounds stupid but people all around the world knows about it because of it
Sir Skullzie no it's more famous because it was one of the first domed stadiums
Wouldn't make money and duhhh
Ya, parking lot turned into a park 🤣 Their Way Too Greedy to let that happen.
Indoor air conditioned parking will replace all the lost spaces. See link for details: adomepark.org
Here's an idea, build a race track inside and bring NASCAR to the dome and save the Astro dome.
Lost Knowledge it would be too small
Don't forget WrestleMania X-Seven.

Worst idea ever!!! We already have Memorial park and plenty of other places to ride a bicycle. We definitely don't need another glorified "dog park". 😆

Plz put astroworld in the midle
will do adomepark.org
Do it
I don't want to know about trees. This is not a good video to me

Strip club!
a MUSEUM can go in Reliance. The Dome too big. the whole point is to modernize/memorialize the architecture. DOME PARK . I LOVE IT. but typically nothing that cool can happen in the US. some dumb ass political person or stuff shirt committee cant handle that much environmental/citizen goodness.
It should be moved to Tennessee lol
Was's the Astrodome was abandoned long time ago because people didn't use any more I don't know I might be wrong👎or maybe I might be right👍because i leave in United States
Thanks adomepark.org
No becuse thats wer Selena singe

@@jamesrichards3086 I live in Florida which much like Texas is very hot most of the year and I don't really think people will want to climb to the top of a huge steel structure in 90 to 100 degree weather. Plus if Texas's weather is anything like Florida all that exposed steel will rust so fast
@@nickyoung630 Houston is not hot most of the year. The heat happens from May to the end of September (4 months=33% of the year) Even in the height of summer the mornings and evenings are lovely.
