    I have had one of these locks for over 15 years and they have the advantage of not having to read the numbers once you know what buttons to press which is ideal in the dark or if your eye sight is suspect and mine has been outside for the last 5 years and works perfectly, Cheers

    Brute forcing a lock like this is pretty easy as well.
    It has 8 pins, and needs 4 of them depressed, and the order of them doesn't matter. That gives us a combined total combinations of (8 x 7 x 6 x 5) / (4 x 3 x 2 x 1) = 1,680/24 = 70 combinations in total.
    Even if the lock didn't have the weakness exploited by Bill, 70 combinations can be done in a matter of minutes.

    • @MrMartinSchou
      @MrMartinSchou 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      > The total number of states the lock can be in is actually 2^8 = 256.
      Which is complete irrelevant, because that includes states where fewer or more than 4 pins are activated at the same time, and those can't open the lock. The only relevant states are the ones that can open the lock, and there are only 70 of those.

    • @MrMartinSchou
      @MrMartinSchou 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      If it can be opened with fewer or more than 4 pins it becomes more insecure. With 3 or 5 pins you only have 56 possible combinations. With 2 or 6 combinations you have 28 possible combinations. With 1 or 7 combinations you have 8 possible combinations, and with 0 or 8 there is only 1 combination.
      It is exceedingly unlikely that anyone who designs locks (even ones as crappy as this one) would ever pick a combination option with fewer than the optimal number of permutations. That'd be like assuming that when picking a tumbler lock, you should just ignore the number of pins you can feel, because they might not be used for anything.

    I had a bike lock with numbers when i saw around 9-10 which i forgot the code one day. I figured out this technic of pulling the 2 parts apart and trying to align the holes with the pins. I managed to unlock it within 5 minutes. I was amazed at myself at first but then realised my bike lock was really shitty.

    These style locks are super popular in Taiwan~ they cost less than $2 USD.
    I remember the first time I saw one on the shelf in a hardware store I had it open in about 2 min.
    You can decode these without even touching or putting pressure on the shackle. You can use a similar technique by just putting pressure on the actuator button.

      The actual number of combinations that this lock can make physically is 256 (it’s just binary), but only 70 of those have 4 digits active and 4 not. If you allow 3 and 5 digit combinations as well it increases to 182.

      Do not pick locks that belong to someone else. Do not pick a lock that you depend on, because your picking tool might get stuck or break. If the lock jams, use some lubricant, do not force entry. Vary tension force and attack angle while picking. 😀 (I have just started.)

    There aren't even a lot of combinations for these kinda locks... the order of the numbers doesn't even matter, that makes this lock easy to figure out even without putting tension on the shackle. You just need the 4 pins to be pushed in in no particular order, so even if you'd just tried it systematically you'd only spent a couple of minutes cracking it.

    For better quality Zarker button lock made in Korea, it will be very difficult to trial as the opening lever will only work if the 5 numbers are correctly depressed.
    First press the opening lever. Then press button one by one. If one stuck, that's the button not inside the combination. Push it to normal after release the lever tension. Then press the lever again and continue with other buttons. Repeat until 5 numbers are left that can be depressed easily, that will be the magic number to open when you push the lever.
    Alternatively, depressed all buttons and try to push up button one by one. The one stuck is to be push up after release the lever tension. Then press the lever hard again and push other buttons up. Continue until left 5 numbers yet to push up, that will be the combination.
    There is no need to pull the shackle tight hard as many videos told.

    This lock only has 255 combinations - 2^8 - 1 = 255.
    2^8 because you have 8 pins, each can be either clicked in or not.
    -1 because the starting position is always everything unclicked.
    Even with picking-proof construction, this would only take couple minutes to get in if tried one by one.

      RogerWilco 255 combinations.

    • @kitsee
      @kitsee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      justin wood you are both mistaken, there's only 70 combinations. the order doesn't matter and number cannot repeat so Combinations = n! / (n-r)!(r!) n = possible numbers, r = numbers used, so
      8! / (8 - 4)!(4!) = 40320 / 24(24) = 40320 / 576 = 70 combinations.
      Edit: used a quick online tool to generate a list of possibilities:
      {a,b,c,d} {a,b,c,e} {a,b,c,f} {a,b,c,g} {a,b,c,h} {a,b,d,e} {a,b,d,f} {a,b,d,g} {a,b,d,h} {a,b,e,f} {a,b,e,g} {a,b,e,h} {a,b,f,g} {a,b,f,h} {a,b,g,h} {a,c,d,e} {a,c,d,f} {a,c,d,g} {a,c,d,h} {a,c,e,f} {a,c,e,g} {a,c,e,h} {a,c,f,g} {a,c,f,h} {a,c,g,h} {a,d,e,f} {a,d,e,g} {a,d,e,h} {a,d,f,g} {a,d,f,h} {a,d,g,h} {a,e,f,g} {a,e,f,h} {a,e,g,h} {a,f,g,h} {b,c,d,e} {b,c,d,f} {b,c,d,g} {b,c,d,h} {b,c,e,f} {b,c,e,g} {b,c,e,h} {b,c,f,g} {b,c,f,h} {b,c,g,h} {b,d,e,f} {b,d,e,g} {b,d,e,h} {b,d,f,g} {b,d,f,h} {b,d,g,h} {b,e,f,g} {b,e,f,h} {b,e,g,h} {b,f,g,h} {c,d,e,f} {c,d,e,g} {c,d,e,h} {c,d,f,g} {c,d,f,h} {c,d,g,h} {c,e,f,g} {c,e,f,h} {c,e,g,h} {c,f,g,h} {d,e,f,g} {d,e,f,h} {d,e,g,h} {d,f,g,h} {e,f,g,h}

    It kind of blows my mind to think that there's 1680* different ways to push in four of the buttons on that lock.
    *edit: actually only 70, I didn't realize that I had to divide that by the number of sequences which are just permutations of the same number sequence which is 4! = 24 so 1680 / 24 = 70.

    • @goyabee3200
      @goyabee3200 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      privatenorby 8*7*6*5 = 1680
      I think that is the right math, I couldn't figure out any other way to do it, anyway... At first I thought it was 8^4 = 4096 which is the number of different up-to-4 digit long sequences of 8 different digits and then I thought it was 8^4-8^3 = 3584 which is the number of 4 digit long sequences of 8 different digits but then I realized, as you said, that order does not matter, so I thought it's like a factorial but you stop after 4 multiplications except the actual number of multiplications you do is 8 modulo n where n is the length of the code so if the code length were 5 then it would be 8*7*6 = 336 and if the length is 7 then the number of possible codes would be 8 which makes sense because you run out of buttons. 8 modulo 4 happens to be 4 so that's the reason I only went 4 into 8!.
      If you're going to tell someone that they're wrong at least have the right answer. Jeez. So disappointing.

    • @goyabee3200
      @goyabee3200 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      privatenorby It gets easier if you think of the number of ways to press only two buttons: you have 8 choices to start out with, and then after you press the first button you only have 7 left, right? So 8 different ways to push the first button and then no matter which button you pick for the first push, you will have 7 choices for the second push, so 8*7 = 56. 56 possible different way to push in only 2 buttons. It works the same way up until the number of buttons you've pushed in is greater than the number of buttons you have left.

    • @goyabee3200
      @goyabee3200 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +privatenorby Yeah, okay, I figured it out. It's 8*7*6*5 / 4! = 1680/24 = 70. I was way off.

    • @rjelstyx4909

      +goyabee does this lock only uses 4 digits combination?

    • @goyabee3200
      @goyabee3200 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rjel Styx Yes, and that's for a reason. If the combination were more than four digits, the number of possible combinations goes down. For example 5 digits would have only 56 possible combinations. 7 digits, which is a lot more obvious, would have only 8 possible combinations, because once you've pushed in 7 of the buttons, there's only one button left, if you pushed in all 8 buttons, the only possible combination would be all buttons pushed in.

      +carz g any press sequence would probably work (5742, 4752 etc). This wouldn't be the case if it was an inline dial style. With the dial style, wheel 1 must always be turned to 7, wheel 2 to 5, 3 to 4 and 4 to 2. The lock wont care which wheel is set first as long as its end result is 7542

    My lock as 10 buttons and when I try to put the shackle it doesn’t budge but it will spring in closed a bit more. Also, the open switch at the bottom only goes half way and I supposed to move the release switch and then pull the shackle or keep the release switch in the closed position and pull the shackle?

    • @Bunny99s
      @Bunny99s 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +frechieguy 36? Where do you get that number from? If there's always exactly 4 numbers pressed you get 70 combinations. So it's (8! / 4!) / 4! == 70 see this page:
      mathcentral.uregina.ca/QQ/database/QQ.09.07/h/heidi1.html
      If any combination is allowed there are 2^8 == 256 combinations. Of course you want to take out all 0 or all 1 since that's too obvious ^^.
      8Bit security ^^ If it was a password in a computer it would only take a tiny tiny fraction of a second to try all combinations :D

    • @DatCupcake
      @DatCupcake 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bunny83 The order of the numbers is irrelevant. For instance, 8264 would be the exact same combination as 4682 or 6428. That's why there are so few combinations.

    • @Bunny99s
      @Bunny99s 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +frechieguy Yes, of course the order doesn't matter, that's why there are only 70 combinations with 4 out of 8. If the order would matter (which is impossible for that lock design) there would be 1680 (== 8! / 4! or == 8*7*6*5). However since the order is irrelevant the possible combinations (given any number count) is 256 since it's basically like a single 8 bit number. You simply have 8 switches which can be either "on" or "off".
      I never had a lock like that but as Jonathan LAI said in a comment below it is possible to set any combination as password, so there are in fact 256 combinations. It's only 70 if the password length is 4 numbers. With 4 numbers there are 24 (4!) permutations possible. Since the order doesn't matter we simply have to divide the possible combinations of 1680 by 24. That gives us 70. So for a 4 number password there are 70 possibilities

    Is it necessary to click in sequence 2-4-5-7 or can you press in any sequence like 2-5-7-4 or 4-7-2-5. if there is a sequence then there are ( factorial8) combination (8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1) =40320. If sequence does not matter the 8x7x6x5 = 1680 only. combinations. It would not take long to try all.

    Does it work backwards? If you pressed 7 first would it show you one out of the four numbers, or does it only click the 2 if you press it first. Either way, it would still narrow the combos from 8! to 4! which is a world of difference.

    • @LordBhorak
      @LordBhorak 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NinjasKill123 You don't have to use exactly 4 buttons, so that makes the amount of viable combinations up to 254 (So each pin represents a bit where unpushed is 0 and pushed is 1, so it makes 8 bits and 0000 0000 is not an option, naturally, and 1111 1111 would be silly as well).

    These locks are so easy to just guess.
    There are only 8*7*6*5 = 1680 combinations possible, after all

    • @potworzgo
      @potworzgo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, there isn't. Even if you could assume that you know that u have to press 4 buttons, you made a equation with possibility of changing numbers in order. And what i mean by that is that the equation 8*7*6*5 is a good start because first you can press one of the eight, then one of the seven buttons ETC... BUT if u just multiply it you will get number of possibilities that counts even that pressing keys:| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | and: | 2 | 1 | 3 | 4 | are different passwords for the locket. Which are not since we don't care which of those buttons was pressed earlier. So what u need to do is first multiply 8*7*6*5 and then divide it by number of possible placing those 4 numbers in different order, which is "4!". Then you got the right answer which is 70 possibilities. What is more if you count that those lockets can have 5 button codes or 2 button codes, you have to make 6 equations to count all possibilities (6 becouse if you press one button you have 8 and if you press 7 buttons you have 8 possiblities too).
