@@kazuabs will the person in this video just said was slightly incorrect if you turn off your internet connection and you place a disc in a console and you then download what's on the disc and it says it's ready to play then that means that the game is on the desk the only thing you downloading is updates and day one patch but if you can play the game from what's on the desk then congratulations you have yourself a full game on a disc
@pokedrago I mean, sure, that's still an option for a bunch of games, but an increasing number of boxed games are shipping incomplete - either requiring a patch to be playable, or not even having the majority of the game's data on disc. Check the fine print on a PS5 or Xbox Series game some time, even ones that don't have a large "Internet required" label on the front of the packaging may actually require the Internet to give you the playable product you purchased. Nintendo first party are, at least, largely immune to this issue even if some third party games like NBA still require the majority of their data to be installed over the Internet.
I don't mind digital...removes clutter imo. But I wish we could save it in our hard drives, because once the servers are down digital copy will go with it
I've gone from "I need to play every game" to "I know what games I tend to like, so I'm more picky now." Time is vastly more limited now between work and life and then friends wanting to play multi-player. I'm more picky on what single player games I'm playing since I like JRPGs and a lot of them are 60+ hours now. Beginning of this year I played three games between January and June. Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Persona 3 Reload. All three games took me about 120-150 hours (Persona 3 reload was 2 playthroughs for the platinum even).
True. I grew up in the golden age of gaming without being able to afford any of them, except on paper magazines. Now at least I can relive my childhood.
Denki, this discussion was so relatable for me. Personally, I've tried my best to keep up with todays games with about a 50/50 success rate. But the amount of games I have NOT finished is embarrassingly large. So I make myself feel better and ask if I had fun. If I did and put even 10 hours in, I call that a win. You know, silver linings and all that.
Agreeeeeed. My gaming habits have changed immensely at age 39. I got rebirth earlier this year and I just stopped playing because it was exhausting. Decided to take a break and hit shorter games like astro bot. I have a crazy schedule in life . I was playing rebirth and realized I still have so much more to do in the game ...and it's exhausting . Switch has been super clutch for me. Just got Zelda echoes of wisdom and I'm having fun. Yes I got TOTK and poured hours into it, but I had FUN. The game was fun. I avoid online because of things like you explained about Gran Turismo and to avoid the toxic communities some online games have. I avoid buying digital because without the Internet , you don't really own these games, hence why Steam puts that message before you buy games. This is why I've been heavy into retro gaming lately.
I've run into exactly the same issue (and with the same game). Especially with a 2 year old, I just don't have time to dump 50+ hours into games anymore. My steam deck has been great for on the go gaming, but I've also been doing more retro gaming because it seems more manageable
I do get what he is saying because I've kind of felt this. I do the classic "come home from work and do what I gotta do then basically fall asleep after a bit of playing a game" and it's kind of why my games I play are very few and I have priorities when it comes to them
Physical media still exists solely because brick and mortar shops exist. When Sony tried to remove Physical media with the PSP Go most stores refused to sell it because margins on console sales are abysmal compared to new and used physical games, accessories and extra services (console repairs, insurance, etc.). Last time i checked my local big electronics store only had PS5 Slims with the disk drive in display, while the diskless versions were just mentioned as an option on a piece of paper on the side of the isle, same goes for my local gamestop that has tons of ads for used old fat PS5s with the diskdrive and no signs of the diskless version.
In my opinion the newest Zelda may be a good example of volume. Almost less than 20 hours you can complete everything, and still can fulfill core players with hard mode or using fewer items. Armored core 6 may be my personal limitation. I completed the tropies in PS5 just above 20 hours, but this was done after I trained my skill in PC ver with 40-50 hours. It just made me feel exhausted…

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Some games are long and large in scale seemingly to only justify the AAA digital price tag and there’s way too much red tape to play a game. Also, the explicit and aggressive death of physical media is insulting. Companies (outside of Gamepass, Gog, and Steam) are barely capable of providing a compelling online store.
solution: play indie games pretty much all of the issues you mention are AAA exclusive, plus you also support passionate developers instead of giant conglomerates
Counterpoint: What happens when said indie company gets too big and gets bought out by yet another giant conglomerate. They fucking massacred Life Is Strange imo with Double Exposure. People paid $80 to run a broken mess of a game and beta test it before the actual launch.
Felt the same way recently with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. During the gold early access, it was nice. But once the regular release took place, its been a mess with server problems and maintenance.
Good to know I'm not the only one feeling like I open steam every day and a new game iappears on the main screen. It's like tik tok but for gamers. I haven't even started playing a game and I see like 3 newer games that look better than the one I'm playing...
Honestly I agree with pretty much everything said, My biggest disappointment in recent years has been Payday 3, I play Payday 2 almost religiously because I liked it that much, and when Payday 3 was said to be online-only, I've just been constantly questioning why a CO-OP based shooter NEEDS to be always online. And the problem with internet dependency in games is that once the servers are down, your 60$ investment just got a lot worse because of it or is completely unusable, it's awful, along with some companies thinking we do not have a right to back up our content we've purchased (Nintendo...) gaming has overrall just gotten worse for awhile.
I really feel this! As a 34yr old Dad even having series x and gamepass, couldn’t cut it. This is why my rog ally with bazzite os fits me really well, couch gaming in the living room just casual games like Rocket League and fh4 works great for me.
I completely get this! I want to have games that aren’t fully internet dependent. Game preservation for sure, since that nintendo shop did hurt. I’m definitely not ready for a future where we fully phase out physical games. I’ll also miss the physical collector’s editions, the steel cases, the art books, and etc. I would like more casual games since I don’t have time for the long form (save for the weekends IF I don’t have plans). Digital gaming/ cloud gaming is definitely something of a pain point.
I’ll join in as another old man yelling at cloud. I miss the days of arcade style gameplay where you can sit down and be in game playing within seconds. Now even the most simple racing games seem to have menu after menu after menu before I ever start playing them the race is over and I’m back into the labyrinth of menus. Mobile games are by FAR the worst offenders with micro transactions around every corner, but consoles have become fairly egregious as well. While I love to customize characters, vehicles, etc sometimes I just want to sit down and play for 15-30min and when 10+ min is used on menus and customizations I go a bit crazy. My wife and I tackle 1-2 longer story driven games a year, but for the most part we don’t have the time or headspace to dedicate to that type of gaming.
I just want to go back to the PS2 days. You buy a disc put it in the console and play. And more importantly you 100% owned that game. You have the freedom to keep it if you're a collector or you could sell it for money towards your next game purchase. Can't do much with a digital license. It's not worth value for consumers. We can't trade it with other accounts and hopefully that's something we will eventually see as an option in the all digital future.
Agreed, but that disc you "owned" was technically just a license check in a different format as well. A physical license is still a license to access said data.
I totally agree with you, my love for gaming has hit some sort of a wall or a loss of love over the last 10 years.. yea I'm almost 40 but the length of games, complexity just makes me walk away from it.. I'll spend a couple hours or give it a week such as elden ring for example then put it down because I just don't have the time to follow through... try to get back into it a month later then you forget what you were doing, or your game skill/button memory has disappeared and no longer can continue
Definitely relate to this, im in my early 30s now and find myself getting burnt out trying to keep up with all the big games, not to mention the cost. Ive found more joy recently playing games like Thank goodness you're here and Card Shop Simulator than anything else.
i mean.. there is an easy fix for all of that.. just dont play AAA games. Look into the Indie Sector, there is so much craeativity and passion there... gaming can still be as fun as back in the day, just dont throw your money at the large flashy productions for the masses.
Let's face it, even if games are more managable lengthwise, is not online dependant, do not have bad anti cheat software and have full ownership of the game and so on you won't get the same feeling playing games as you once were then because you are old now.
I think a big thing now I'm in my mid-30s is to make sure I try different genres of games that I've never attempted before you cant eat your favourite food all the time for ever. Even if i hate the game it can reinvigorate my enjoyment of my main stay games.
100% you are right, its harder to play games as you age, not just because you have less time, its that the games that are out are demanding more time by way of battle passes and bloat.
There has to be a reckoning at some point for those kinds of games that require an internet connection to even function. We have already seen the precedent in older console generations where the game companies shut down old online storefronts and game servers. Thankfully the consumers themselves are taking action. The modding/open-source community is hard at work restoring online functionality that was lost (ex. Pretendo). The PC space has a sleuth of custom community-run servers for games/versions that were abandoned by the original developers. Also, those movements (like Stop Killing Games in the UK) are spreading awareness about the issue.
One way to beat a game is to out down the games you come back to often. If you out down your racing game until you beat final fantasy. You'll feel refreshed once you come back to your racing game. Edit: it's ok to just not beat a game if you feel like you've had enough.
The increased complexity of games and their dependence on internet connections is the reason I got into emulation and playing older games. As a gamer in his mid fifties, I grew up with Atari, Colecovision and the first Playstation and spent countless hours enjoying their games. Not to mention my Gameboy obsession especially with Pokemon games. While new games look great, the fun I had with games like Tomb Raider or the various fighting franchises more than makes up for it. Hope Ken checks out the emulation culture and does a video on it.
i'm an old man now too and I agree haha. Honestly I barely game now which makes me sad because it's something I used to love so much. But now it's just exhausting even trying to get on and play. And yeah forcing to be online is annoying as well. Idk the issue is back in the day they had to have a full game completed and without bugs as much as possible before they released the physical hardware. Now it doesn't matter they can release a broken game and just release a patch to fix it. And microtransactions are how they make money so they don't care about the actual game. It's annoying. I totally agree with everything you said here. Bummer gaming isn't what it once was.
That's the thing, many if not most people are A-OKAY with everything being always online, but imagine the sad reality of future. When in let's say 20+ years from now, you wanna dust off your PS5 or XBOX Series S/X and the games you bought on launch that require internet, having no servers online, not being able to play what you bought with your own hard earned money. That thing is what is scary to me, especially since i love gaming and technology and not being able to preserve them or save them and have some kind of offline modes that don't require server connectivity and being able to access most if not all content is just.. not good to say the least.
this hits home man, long play time for games as well as the draconic DRM system which our dear ken here faces is making console and pc gaming less and less appealing. as a full time employee as well, i only have time to play during my travel time to work and during a bit of down time after work, so there is no way in hell i can it through 4-5 hours in a single sitting to play a game. mgs: peace walker is the first time i realise how a full AAA game can be made into a 'mobile version', and now i just pick up 2-3 mobile games and rock them over my bus/ train rides. and sadly, my rog ally is more of a productivity video editing laptop over a gaming console
Yes, big facts! Just recently got NBA2K25 PC working due to Denuvo anti-tamper error, which prevented me from playing at all since launch for a little over a month and a half.
I am in the exact same boat then it comes to FFXVI .. I was real hot on it for like a week and then got busy and haven't had the motivation to go back to it
Always online single player modes make 0 sense they could easily let you download the content beforehand if it's on demand streamed it makes it easier for them to take the games away once the servers go off also off topic I like the longer commitment games makes me feel like I got more for my money and I enjoy coming back and getting addicted until I beat it in the future (looking at you cp2077 3 years after launch) but I do understand the issues you have with the length they are these days
Yes. It floos with bad experiences of pushing “don’t be sexist, hater, biggot” for those who are not audience that needs to be changed😢 WE NEVER WERE HATERS.
I wish game company corporates could realize that focusing on giant blockblunders only is making gaming stale and full of empty promised games. 360 era was a golden age that I feel like was a dream that never happened with where games went :L
I do feel same with the current situation, sometimes after hour I just want to sit and playing game yet when I open the game new update came up and spend 30 - 60 min depending on the game 😢😢😢
In the UK FC25 cost £69.99 for a digital download for the standard version. The disc version could be bought for £57 at Amazon and around £60 from other retailers. Why are we paying more for a digital copy?
we grew up poor and never owning any gaming consoles. now im in my late 20's i bought my very first console ever last july: ps5. i was so happy i bought every ps1 to ps3 games that are ported to ps4/ps5 that i dreamt of playing when i was a kid and every ps4 & ps5 game i saw during my college days. sure i was too busy with work to play on weekdays, but friday night to sunday afternoon i am playing nonstop like a kid that got a gift from christmas all i am saying is, sure games especially single player that are campaign heavy are long and needs commitment, but it sure is fun if you give time to it. just need to be a lil responsible to do both irl responsibilities and gaming at the same time lmao
A gaming system that only works if you have good internet. My game if setup in the Garage WiFi signal is TRASH. That’s why I didn’t buy a PS5 or XBOX. Hence why I’m back to playing my 360 and PS3
I'm in my early 30s, and I definitely find myself feeling less and less "in love" with most modern games. I'm definitely not some "Older games better" type person, I really enjoyed the new Zelda and Emio The Smiling Man screams "future hidden gem"; but the majority of my game time this year has been playing on my PS2 or emulating older systems on a retro handheld. The simplicity of both the games and the actual experience of just picking a disc, popping it in and playing is refreshing in a world of service plans, deliberately confusing monetisation and games designed to make a certain percentage of players addicts.
Dude that PSN outage pissed me off so much. I had bought Nier Replicant during the outage and downloaded it but couldn’t open it cause PSN couldn’t authenticate it. On top of that, none of my streaming apps work and I use my PS4 as my tv box as well. Incredibly fucking stupid that this shit happens.
One thing about longer games. How many hours do you put into Valorant or GT7 in a month? I had the same problem, but playing DotA2, watching pro games etc. Dropped the game and now those 2-3 matches in the evening at the end of the month is nearly 50-60hrs extra of gameplay in other games. Thats finishing Black Myth Wukong and Stellar Blade in about a month excluding any additional time spent playing on weekends
Couldnt agree more Ken. I am having so much trouble getting into games these days. For me an example of an unfinished game was the Witcher 3. That game is way too complicated to get back into after a few weeks away. Luckily i got quite a decent little retro game collection. Recently completed the dex in Pokemon Emerald for example!
I agree with all that you said. FF7 Remake is a prime example of being demanding. I forced myself to finish it but it was 20 hrs of story and 60 hrs of slow movement, cutscenes, and fetch quests. Just so much padding these days with games. I can't even turn to an online game either bc they are P2W or battle royales. The only normal shooter out there is COD but yet again its micro transaction hell.
that's the reason i don't buy any console on this generation and only get a PS4 1 year before PS5 was launched, and i´m still buying games for older consoles
Nah this is valid. New games charge you for content that would otherwise be the staple and priceless for older games. New games don't include extras anymore and if they do it's a code to BUY AN EXCLUSIVE DLC 😂
For these reasons, I keep my old systems (consoles) with physical libraries around. I'll play modern systems for the new games but I'll play my old systems to have actual fun. That's jus how I split it.
I live in Florida. Just got power back from the hurricane but my Internet is still down. Online required games are useless to me right now.
Even more so in situations like this. Hope everything's good with you after the storm

Bummer gaming isn't what it once was.
one of the first Denki vids i've seen, i know him from Austin's channel. but he really sounds like Asutin in the way he speaks 😂😅
Modern games are all about flashy, childlike graphics and no substance. The AAA industry is borderlining on mobile gaming at this point.
This is why I have been playing lot of retro games this year especially japan exclusive games that I have never played before. 😃
PREACH, Ken!
this hits home man, long play time for games as well as the draconic DRM system which our dear ken here faces is making console and pc gaming less and less appealing. as a full time employee as well, i only have time to play during my travel time to work and during a bit of down time after work, so there is no way in hell i can it through 4-5 hours in a single sitting to play a game. mgs: peace walker is the first time i realise how a full AAA game can be made into a 'mobile version', and now i just pick up 2-3 mobile games and rock them over my bus/ train rides. and sadly, my rog ally is more of a productivity video editing laptop over a gaming console
This is why I spend most my time playing retro games I missed growing up
its not just 2024, it has been bad for quite sometime now
I feel the same Ken, 8-15hr campaign was fantastic. Now I just play older games via emulation and multiplayer games on the new systems.
One of the best things about the pokemon games. You connect online when you want to.
Yes, big facts! Just recently got NBA2K25 PC working due to Denuvo anti-tamper error, which prevented me from playing at all since launch for a little over a month and a half.
I am in the exact same boat then it comes to FFXVI .. I was real hot on it for like a week and then got busy and haven't had the motivation to go back to it
Everything you mentioned is why I stuck with my Switch :)
Denki had reached a new achievement and that is Unc Denki!!
Always online single player modes make 0 sense they could easily let you download the content beforehand if it's on demand streamed
it makes it easier for them to take the games away once the servers go off
also off topic
I like the longer commitment games
makes me feel like I got more for my money and I enjoy coming back and getting addicted until I beat it in the future (looking at you cp2077 3 years after launch) but I do understand the issues you have with the length they are these days
Yes. It floos with bad experiences of pushing “don’t be sexist, hater, biggot” for those who are not audience that needs to be changed😢 WE NEVER WERE HATERS.
Totally agree that we should be able to play our games offline if we want to. T's the very reason I've given up gaming whether PC or console.
Final fantasy xvi was a piece of art. Spent 72hours on finishing campaign
This video is for us, old gen kid that miss our child days 😅
Damn I miss it too 🥺
I wish game company corporates could realize that focusing on giant blockblunders only is making gaming stale and full of empty promised games. 360 era was a golden age that I feel like was a dream that never happened with where games went :L
That's why I'm playing Days Gone for the 4th time. Single player, not online.
And it's awesome!
I do feel same with the current situation, sometimes after hour I just want to sit and playing game yet when I open the game new update came up and spend 30 - 60 min depending on the game 😢😢😢
My biggest problem with modern gaming is that the games don't even come in the disc anymore.
In the UK FC25 cost £69.99 for a digital download for the standard version. The disc version could be bought for £57 at Amazon and around £60 from other retailers. Why are we paying more for a digital copy?
we grew up poor and never owning any gaming consoles. now im in my late 20's i bought my very first console ever last july: ps5.
i was so happy i bought every ps1 to ps3 games that are ported to ps4/ps5 that i dreamt of playing when i was a kid and every ps4 & ps5 game i saw during my college days.
sure i was too busy with work to play on weekdays, but friday night to sunday afternoon i am playing nonstop like a kid that got a gift from christmas
all i am saying is, sure games especially single player that are campaign heavy are long and needs commitment, but it sure is fun if you give time to it. just need to be a lil responsible to do both irl responsibilities and gaming at the same time lmao
Holy crap that fujiwara wrap is fire 🔥🔥🔥
Celebrating 2 years of the rtx 4090 today 🎉

Subjective. Gaming has never been better than it is right now.
A gaming system that only works if you have good internet. My game if setup in the Garage WiFi signal is TRASH. That’s why I didn’t buy a PS5 or XBOX. Hence why I’m back to playing my 360 and PS3
Online requirements for games should only be for free games. Anything you pay for should be able to be played without online connections
Just went to the Pawn Shop yesterday so I could buy and actually own a physical game
"you will have everything but own nothing"
Preach brother 🙏!!!!!!!
It's kinda funny when you listen to the cadence of your voice it's identical to Austin. Not a bad thing. Just something funny I noticed
And this is why retro gaming is trending upwards rn
I agree with all that you said. FF7 Remake is a prime example of being demanding. I forced myself to finish it but it was 20 hrs of story and 60 hrs of slow movement, cutscenes, and fetch quests. Just so much padding these days with games. I can't even turn to an online game either bc they are P2W or battle royales. The only normal shooter out there is COD but yet again its micro transaction hell.
that's the reason i don't buy any console on this generation and only get a PS4 1 year before PS5 was launched, and i´m still buying games for older consoles
The Always Online...is really just a chain that the gaming industry made... metaphor
I couldn't play SpaceMarine 2 at all during that time even the single-player campaign
The real question is when the PS5 is going to get its first ever game, its been 4 years already
First problem is playing a racing game on PlayStation ew
Can definitely agree with this
Not gonna lie, I have a lot of the same frustrations with this console generation, although I must admit I have been quite enjoying myself 🤷♂
Nah this is valid. New games charge you for content that would otherwise be the staple and priceless for older games. New games don't include extras anymore and if they do it's a code to BUY AN EXCLUSIVE DLC 😂
I get his point and I am on the same wave
That's why I gave up on GT, always online is so unnecessary unless you're racing others online
For these reasons, I keep my old systems (consoles) with physical libraries around. I'll play modern systems for the new games but I'll play my old systems to have actual fun. That's jus how I split it.
