so beautiful, poetic and playful! i saw this movie on tv when i was a child and it stuck in my mind. i couldn`t get over the music... lovely and forgotten
Odette Joyeux et Jacques Tati dans ce merveilleux tour de force énigmatique du Cinéma Français ! Ce beau film intrigant et plein de spontanéité a véritablement marqué ma jeunesse !
This film utilizes the "Pepper's Ghost" illusion technique. Pepper's ghost is an illusion technique used in the theatre, cinema, amusement parks, museums, television & concerts & it may date back as far as 1589. In his 1589 work Magia Naturalis (Natural Magic), scientist & scholar Giambattista della Porta included a description of an illusion, titled "How we may see in a Chamber things that are not" that is the first known description of the Pepper's ghost effect. In Victor Sjöström's 1921 film, The Phantom Carriage, the special effects were mainly done with double (or more) exposures in the camera, as optical printing was not available until the early 1930s. Also, several layers were used to enable the ghostly images to appear to walk around in three dimensions. In Claude Autant-Lara's 1946 film, Sylvie et le fantôme (Sylvie and the Ghost), the special effect of the ghost appearing was achieved by filming through a glass pane & using two identical sets (Pepper's Ghost illusion). Not sure if it's the first use of the illusion in film.
Un voile de poésie à chaque image. Tati, tout dans l'attitude, le geste préfigurant ainsi "François" le facteur de "jour de fête" ou encore Monsieur Hulot.
Elegant and poetic films made in France in the forties and the fifties and forgotten by the DVD producers. Why? They probably suppose there is no public for them,which is totally wrong. A masterpiece,like "Les Visiteurs du Soir",had to wait decades for a decent edition. How to convince the shortsighted DVD people to discover and promote these wonderful films? Mass demonstrations,boycots? Waiting for suggestions...
It is incomprehensible that this wonderful movie,in the line of the "poetic realism"of Carné and friends,is still not available in DVD. In the middle of the continuous thrash production "they" have not time for this jewell? I suppose it would not even be expensive. A shame for alll DVD industry. We know that they are generally rather primitive in their tastes and culture. But to such extremes?
It is available now in good print on the criterion collection (eclipse series 45), one of four romantic films by Autant-Lara featured in the boxed set.

@MrDavidcairns really? i`d love to read it. so rarely someone writes about this film...
where can i find it?
@MrDavidcairns thanks!
Jacques Tati as the Ghost.
This was his 4th film. The first came 1934.
True: I should have said first FEATURE film.
But it is only a bit part, isn't it? Like in the next film, Le diable au corps. I haven't seen either of them.
No, he plays the ghost, it's second lead.
