Years ago, I went into a diner. I stood there for a long time waiting to be seated. Several people were seated who came in after me. Finally I stared at the hostess until she acknowledged me. "What can I get for you?" I replied, "An oil change. What do you think I've been standing here for, while you seated others who came after me?" I walked out. I instantly felt a deeper appreciation for McDonalds after that.

I rebuilt my own transmission in my garage. The hardest part is getting it out and on the bench. Fixing it was pretty straight forward. They only go back together one way. Cost me maybe $600. With upgraded parts. 2006 Ford F-150

Dave, I'm 73. Just did the tranny in my 1977 Dodge B200 van. Tranny jack from Harbor Freight. All the bolts are exposed with engine cover off. Not a big deal 727 Torqueflight. $900. Same guy did my 1977 Chevy C10 pickup with a 700r4 overdrive automatic.$1800 for that with new locking converter, done a little more hi-performance. Works perfect, shifts into overdrive and then the converter locks. Sweet.

Dave, I just had the alternator done in my Sprinter. $1,150 NZ all up. About 8 mnths ago it was the turbo charger. Slightly below NZ $1,500. I keep getting my transmission serviced and each time I cross my fingers AND toes, that's she'll last me a fair bit longer!!🌞👍. I have some panelbeating coming up and am going to use my insurance, even though those businesses that have given me quotes raise their eyebrows. It's there for a reason !

My advice on the Ford AWD is to pay attention to the PTU as soon as you get it. One of our delivery vehicles is a Ford FLEX AWD, excellent car! but the PTU only holds 1 quart of gear oil & needs changed every 30K miles. we never serviced ours & it boiled the fluid into a small blob before it self destroyed @180K miles. Cost was $3100 to replace w new Ford PTU. You're welcome, lol

I'd be a little cautious of sticking a used unit in there. Been down that road before, it was a disaster. You've got a very nice van there, Dave! One other thing; if you haven't changed the fluid and filter in a while, you could try that with Lucas trans treatment, might make it last a few more years.

Currently sitting at 318,000 miles and am hoping to make 400,000 before anything major need to be replaced. Since moving to the West Slope of Colorado my yearly mileage has dropped to just over 1000 miles and I am a few months short of 75, so we both could make it to the 400k mark pretty much intact. I changed the battery in my wife’s 2017 Ford Escape titanium…wow what a pain in the backside! They should draw and quarter the engineers who designed that crap. It took me 5 hours to get the battery replaced. I ended up breaking the air box mount taking that out to get to the battery. It is a good car so far but it is not like working on anything you have ever seen. I used to work on business jets and they are easy compared to that escape! Just beware they literally have 50 pounds of junk in a 5 pound box. Just look at the battery location under the hood.

Sounds exactly like on the 2018 Ford Focus 5dr Hatchback we bought last month. 17200 miles but being 5 years old i knew a new battery was the first thing to do. Half the battery resides clear back underneath the windshield cowling. At least on the Focus the front of the battery box has 2 release clips to let the front of the box push out forward so you can work the battery towards the front while lifting up on it and getting it to stand on its end to lift it out. Getting the new one in is just as big of a wrestling match, just in reverse order.

If it were a Chrysler or Dodge tranny, my first suspicion would be a dirty tranny filter. Does the fluid look dirty, burnt with a burnt smell? I know zero about Fords thankfully. ;) Dodge minivan trannys would chatter once the filters get dirty. Change it out, problem solved.

How you feeling Dave? When I had my car lot I could not keep Ford escapes on the lot as soon as I would get one from the auction within days it was sold they're good little cars. I'm looking at a 2002 Ford E350 with the handicap lift on the side door and the raised high roof I can stand up in it at 6 foot with no problem the only bad Peach is I gotta take all the seats out of it I'm gonna test drive it this weekend. I'm just gonna do a quick conversion like you did in the van because I'm gonna be keeping my apartment I'm gonna be on the road part time. Every time I see your maverick and bring back some memories that's what I used to pass my driving test my friend had a 1971302 maverick it was the two-tone blue with the black vinyl roof 2 door automatic it was easy to parallel park because the first time I went I took my dad's Cadillac sedan deville and failed the test because of it I hit the building trying to parallel park so the maverick was way easier anyway stay safe stay strong stay healthy God bless and enjoy life,

Curious as to why you would pay cash for a large expenditure, rather than another form of payment.
I use my credit card (love the paper trail), then pay it right away with a check to my bank. I've also used certified bank checks (I'm so old), so that strangers don't have my bank account number. I just can't hand over cash. If anything goes wrong, it'll give your attorney intestinal spasms, and wind up costing you more in billable hours.

Plus you might get cash back off your credit card.

I’ve was a mechanic for 30yrs , doesn’t matter of manufacture of vehicles, with high mileage cars will have issues. I’ve seen people put lots of money in high mileage cars that are nickel and dime you to death , and still have a 2k vehicle

The first place you went to with the "variable pricing" is one to stay away from for sure. It would surely end up actually being a few hundred more than the high estimate. Maybe spend a morning on the phone and call around a little farther from home. Be sure and look at online reviews too.
