Another tip for "deep cleaning" your cubes: You can also use isopropyl alcohol instead of soapy water! It pretty much dissolves the gunk away when used in conjunction with a toothbrush, and it's far more volatile but that means the pieces dry out way faster! EDIT: Also, don't hate yourself like I did and wear gloves if you're going to use isopropyl alcohol. My fingertips were so dry after the last time I cleaned a cube with it...
Detergents (soap) should be better at removing oily lubricants as the detergent breaks apart the molecules. It's why dish soap removes bacon fat from a plate quite well. Isopropanol will just wipe away the gunk. It's still useful as you can remove it with some good wiping, but soap is technically better. It's finding a good balance as it may be impossible to clean pieces with loads of metal in and you don't want to use a solvent like lighter fluid on plastic. If you're just cleaning screws and other metal parts, lighter fluid is good. Be careful though as both 2-prop and lighter fluid are flammable and irritants.
@alicialiwan6127 Tip number one: DON'T EVER USE LOTION TO LUBE YOUR CUBE!!! You should use water or silicone based lubes designed for speedcubing. Tip number two: Start with soap like Z3 did in this video, then if there's any extra gunk, consider using isopropanol to remove it.
Hello Z3. I have two video ideas: Turning a stickerless cube into a stickered cube 3D designing a speedcube that is the “average” of some of your more recent mains, and then seeing how it performs I love your channel btw :3
For the first idea that's what people did with lots of their stickerless cubes back when they weren't wca legal. They made force cubes and then put stickers on them, however now people do it for fun because stickered cubes are now wca legal
Hey boss, tip from mechanical assembly, pre-lube the highest wear and easy to access components first, in this application it’ll have extra lube on the high friction spots and should also provide better overall coverage
Despite being on a different continent (Well, the UK is only an island but you get what I mean), it seems I have a near identical toothbrush to the one you used for the de-gunking process!
If you ever over lube a cube just make sure to clean it out immediately. I overly ed one of my speed cubes and I ended up just being able to use a paper towel to clean it but it was only possible because of the fact that the cube was brand new (it was an rs3m so there was no factory lube). If you are ever lubing a cube and it feels awful to turn just clean it immediately because it won’t have time to break in. What I’ve found with the lubricants I use is they will feel similar to what they will feel like when they are broken in but they will be slower as the lube still needs to break in. I have never successfully cleaned a cube that I over lubed and didn’t clean out immediately so don’t panick and don’t just let it sit in one spot for a long time because it will become hard to turn.
For some reason the lube in my Gan Air M started to dry out insanely fast, but it would leave a weird sticky residue, that would make the cube slow to turn, and make it collect dust and dirt which made it basically impossible to clean, Eventually, I tried wiping all the pieces with a wet cloth, but it didn’t work. I didn’t want to wash a gan cube with water, so I ended up just buying a cheaper moyu cube.
I do like to simply clean my cubes whenever it’s around the time to apply new lube, it’s extra steps but it just prevents problems with the cost of sometime
Do you know what can revive cube plastics? Lubicle 1. It has Teflon in it which, in theory, once you keep breaking it in, the Teflon fills in the gaps so that it can feel brand new again! I tried it on an old RS3M 2020, and it feels really nice!
Next video: "how to add 200+ magnets in non-magnetic stickerless 3×3 cube" because I want to get more faster and add core and corner magnets, can you make it please
For stickerless cubes, you can try sticking them in an ultrasonic cleaner. (Stickers probably wouldn’t survive.) You can then finish off with a vacuum chamber for accelerated drying. You can also try using dry lubes, like graphite or PTFE. Finally, you can try mixing lubricants with soap. I wouldn’t recommend this for every application, but this is done for some industrial equipment.
Just use a microfiber towel is way better than paper tissue, or use microfiber towel with alcohol, this way is super fast to clean and never gonna get this issue again i promise
They will wear out faster and start too feel bad if you don’t lube them and further down the road you will get plastic shards in your core and the cube will need to be cleaned often

Isopropyl is great when what you clean needs to not have water on it but are you sure its as good as soapy water for oily substances ?
@@magusperde365 Hmm, fair point. Maybe Isopropyl works best for me because I only ever use water based lubes?
