My underrated Criterions.... - Dead Ringers - The Harder They Come - Peeping Tom - Monsters and Madmen collection - La haine - Quadrophenia - The Game - Things to Come - Jabberwocky - Uncut Gems Honorable Mention: High and Low
I think a great underrated film in the collection is Three Outlaw Samurai, not just because not many people talk about it but because the Blu Ray is $30 so it’s a bit cheaper than your average criterion and I think those who r tight for cash but still want to indulge in the sale should definitely check it out
Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,The Fisher King,Jabberwocky & Brazil these films bring me Much Joy. As most Criterion Collection do.
So glad I clicked! I had bottom of the barrel expectations for Zazie because anything I did hear was pretty negative. People thinking it was irritating and whatnot. I expected to as well based on descriptions but whoa buddy did I not find it to be true. It's the most cartoony a live action movie has ever gotten, and as a lover of the silent era as well seeing this fast paced no holds barred zaniness was so unique an experience. Was quite sad when it was all over.
Another year, another criterion sale. Thanks for the info! I’ve made 2 trips already, but some of these I’ll add to my final BandN run. Right now, my haul includes: - The Funeral - Repo Man - The Worst Person in the World - One Night in Miami - Shallow Grave - Brazil
You'll appreciate this story because it was before you were born! On February 28, 1972, The Damned (Rated X) was aired on CBS at 11:30 pm. Long after most kiddies were sound asleep. The film was heavily edited when shown on CBS television late at night, leading one executive to joke that the film should be retitled The Darned. This technically made it the first X-rated film to be shown on American network television. So 15 year old me, waited until my dad passed out in front of the TV and I crept downstairs to watch it from 1:45-2:30am. The scene I distinctly remember was the slaughter of the SA troops by the SS troops. Glad to see it on your list! 🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞
some great choices especially like the Fassbinder reference, thought I was the only one who had made that connection. Dirk Bogarde is the epitome of underrated, acting wise.
Thanks for that Elliot. I do have the Emigrants & The new Land which I have seen as well in theatre a couple times back when. The Game is another fantastic recommendation that I will look into buying as I have the DVD. I wish it was more appropriate to take advantage of the sale but being in Canada makes for a more costly proposition. Now - onto your next video of recommendations. Thanks for all your content Elliot.
Another fine video! I love your taste, and detailed breakdown of each film you recommend. It’s a joy to listen to and I’m getting loads of great suggestions to watch. Also happy to see Australia is included in the criterion sale!
The Game is very much an underrated gem and yes definitely one of his best films. As for my own recommendations for Criterion; Repulsion (Polanski’s urban paranoia horror) The American Friend (Wim Wenders’ adaptation of Ripley’s Game) and Il Sorpasso (Italian comedy)
I wish "Zazie..." was released in the UK, not even by criterion but just blu ray in general, because apparently Richard Ayoade took large inspiration from it for Submarine.
I got excited when I randomly decided to check if Barnes and Noble started shipping to Australia and to my surprise, it says they are!!! Only to find when I enter my address it still tells me it won't ship to me - quickly to notice ALL the criterion collection says *not available for international shipping* many tears were shed
Agreed on Zazie. Felt like I was watching live action Looney Tunes. Highly recommend rewatching this one as well because half the jokes in the movie happen in the background and if you don't speak French, you'll miss most of that staring at the subtitles.
Looney Tunes is a great analogue for Zazie! I'm trying to improve my very basic French at the moment, and this is a film I will revisit many times in the process!
That’s a great list. I saw the game in the theater. I am a big Ford fan. Great call on young Mr. Lincoln. I think I am going to check out the Damned as I am fascinated by that era in history. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the recommendations, big question here. Do amazon UK ever price match for the criterion sale over in US for those region A discs as they are always up at £27-£35??
some other underrated Criterion releases I'd recommend during the sale are -Mikey and Nicky (1976): Atypical take on the gangster film that becomes a study of male friendship and how friendships decay. Really great acting performances from Peter Falk and John Cassavetes -Death By Hanging (1968): Dark comedy social satire masterpiece from Nagisa Oshima about capital punishment and the treatment of Koreans in Japanese society. This goes to some really strange places and has an ending that will stick in your mind forever -Death of a Cyclist (1955): A film about how guilt can eat you alive from the inside. There's also some interesting stuff in here about social class in fascist Spain and what people do to maintain their position in society -Twenty-Four Eyes (1954): Different kind of war film that focuses on the life of an elementary school teacher in a small Japanese town as Japan descends further into fascism -Black Girl (1966): Powerful look at colonialism and its aftermath via the relationship between a Senegalese maid and the French family she works for
Excellent recommendations. The Troell films are masterpieces---some of the greatest I have ever seen. I appreciate mention of Zazie dans le Métro, it has slipped past me. Also Young Mr. Lincoln is one I had been ignoring and I'll be checking it out. Your others are good suggestions as well
As a fan of thriller/suspense/mysteries The Game is a masterpiece made by a master director. David Fincher knows the essence of each movie he directs and every decision in the movie making process reflects each movie uniquely the pacing, soundtrack, cinematography etc.
Fantastic recommendations! I fully agree that The Game is truly underrated. I’ve been currently interested in the Von Stafenberg and Dietrich box set. What’s your opinion on it? Is it worth the buy?
May as well leave it out there, but I'm in Australia and am after Okja (newly released by Criterion) on Blu Ray. Seemingly the only way to get it here is an eBay import for $60AUD any tips where else I may be able to source it cheaper?
A proper underrated list.. and The Game 😂 I jest, as I agree with The Game having great merit (and is sort of the best Nolan film he never made) I’ve been putting off the Troell Films for the same reasons but I’ll get to it before our next round table 😀 hope you’re well 👍
The Game definitely has a Nolan feel to it. I wonder if he was inspired by Fincher at all. I think you’ll really appreciate Troell’s films. Cheers, Chris!
I saw The Damned when I was in my senior year in Highschool, it was one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen, I’m honestly interested in seeing it again but I’m not looking forward to see that subplot that ends with a child’s suicide.
Hi Elloit, I'm interested to hear if you have seen the Criterion Collection movie Wages of Fear, and its remake by William Friedkin, The Sorcerer. The original has stuck with me from my childhood, and the remake I find equally tense from beginning to end. I would be interested to hear your comments. Regards, Colin Jones
Hi Colin. Yes, I love both films dearly. Some of the best examples of suspense put to screen. I’ll try to feature the films in a video on the channel soon. Cheers!
I picked up Blood Simple, Come and See, Memories of Murder, and The Worst Person in the World. Come and See and Memories of Murder were blind buys and I don't do that much anymore.
Hi Elliott. You're looking well. Would you do a top 10 of overrated films. I think it would be fun. I think the comment section might be busy by the end.
The Game is a great film. The only that threw me off was how Douglas’ character was at the end. Without spoiling anything, if it’d be me, going through all that, I’d tell everyone to F off. Idk. Might be alone in that.
Only on those titles released over here. The BFI currently have a 2 for £30 Criterion sale going on. I imagine that'll be on the usual places, Amazon & HMV, also.
Hi Jay. The American discs are Region A, so you’ll need a multi region player to play them. A standard UK player is locked to Region B only unfortunately
The 2 for £30 appears to still be on at BFI store here, that's about it I'm afraid shop.bfi.org.uk/dvd-blu-ray/the-criterion-collection-special-offer.html
Barnes & Noble won't ship directly to the UK, so you'll either need to use a ship forwarding service or have a friend/family member who lives there reship for you. I've always done the latter in the past.
Talking only about Criterion is boring. There are many collectors who collect and post videos about this label. Also talking about 4k only as "best 4k release of the year", "best 4k transfer", "waiting for 4k" or other topics of this format. Booribg too! I would like, and I think many collectors feel the same way, to see other thematic presentations, releases with great titles, it doesn't matter if they are even on DVD and it doesn't matter if they are from a big label or from an obscure house release. Those posts will be very interesting indeed. If a movie is on Criterion, this movie is the complete opposite of "unknown" or "underrated". Don't you think? by the way, i post in this video because this video is good. the way you present those titles... interesting. But also... Criterion. These movies are very well known so... you understand what I mean... 🤗
But talking about Criterion isn’t boring to me! It excites me. We all like different things and this is what I like to do! I think you should start a TH-cam channel doing that sort of video though. I’d give it a watch
If you can't make it to a Barnes & Noble store, Amazon is price matching the sale on some titles here - amzn.to/3Amka05

Good day to watch Young Mr. Lincoln. Nice picks!
Yes I unknowingly timed that well!
Great list! The Emmigrants/New Land is one of my favorite movies. It really puts you into the story.
I bought on Saturday The Princess Bride and WKW collection.
Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,The Fisher King,Jabberwocky & Brazil these films bring me Much Joy. As most Criterion Collection do.

The scene featuring Helmut Berger as Marlene Dietrich makes The Damned worth watching!

I have Young Mr. Lincoln, such a great American film and courtroom drama. I’m planning to get The Damned on my next B&N criterion haul.
Brilliant, thanks for watching!

Three great recommendations there. Il Sorpasso in particular is a joy. Cheers!
I wish "Zazie..." was released in the UK, not even by criterion but just blu ray in general, because apparently Richard Ayoade took large inspiration from it for Submarine.
Indeed! It is featured in the Louis Malle boxset from Curzon Artificial Eye, but unsure if still available

Only to find when I enter my address it still tells me it won't ship to me - quickly to notice ALL the criterion collection says *not available for international shipping* many tears were shed

Absolutely The Game is overlooked. It's in my top 10 movies along with Breakdown with Kurt Russell, another overlooked gem.
That’s a great list. I saw the game in the theater. I am a big Ford fan. Great call on young Mr. Lincoln. I think I am going to check out the Damned as I am fascinated by that era in history. Thank you very much!

@@ElliotCoen that movie is truly like nothing else I've ever seen

Impeccable taste pal. Earned yourself a new subscriber.

I'd heard of The Game but never knew it was a Fincher movie lol, my dad likes that movie a lot.
thanks for the reco on Zazie. never heard of it before but i’ll definitely check it out now.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Perfect timing, I was just about to go to B&N before I saw you posted this! Lol

Yes absolutely! I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Sternberg Dietrich set if you're a fan of 30s Hollywood
@@ElliotCoen perfect!!!
The "gay and hetero orgy" at the lake is one of the most epically memorable scene of Visconti's "The Damned". I second that choice!
May as well leave it out there, but I'm in Australia and am after Okja (newly released by Criterion) on Blu Ray.

Who does the audio commentary on Young Mr. Lincoln?
It's Joseph McBride. They've written about John Ford a lot and it's a very good listen. Lots of things I didn't know before listening!

I have The Game on VHS. I wonder if I should upgrade it?
Yes go for it!
It's obvious not everyone under-rates them, which is why they are published by Criterion.
The Dammed is a masterpiece I love this movie 🍿
