    The difficulty with finding tradesman who work with quality and integrity is a global issue! I’m from the states and you can’t even get someone to call you back and when you do, it’s half assed and you’re out thousands of dollars. I just got back from Scotland and heard the same stories. It’s so upsetting and especially when you’re a woman, having anyone listen to you without being labeled a Karen is very difficult. We just want what we agreed upon and paid for.

      It's the same in Michigan. Anytime something happens to our home that requires work, I dread the cost, the wait and of course finding someone who will accept the job.

      The same in Chicago, IL. There is this company ABC popular for commercial on TV, they did a horrible work underneath of the kitchen sink with the plumbing and now the pipes are been holding by a piece of an ordinary pipe. I wish I could download a picture for you to understanding. It’s a joke at the same time sad.

    Your age and gender may indeed be a factor - I’m 55 now but I recall having hired men (plumbers, roofers, etc…) taking advantage of me as a young mother when I was newly married and setting up our first home. On one occasion the gentleman remodeling our bathroom refused to discuss a mistake his workers made with me saying “Now missus, you need to calm down and get your husband on the phone.” My husband told him I was in charge of the project and that was enough. While I’d like to think we have come a long way, I do think many folks still take advantage of young people in general. Stay on top of people you hire. You have lovely taste. You know what you’re doing😉

    I can totally relate to the tradesman issue. Walking through the house in muddy boots when you have cream carpets, not finishing jobs then not calling back or leaving the place in a complete mess. Not even mentioning the price difference to when I ask for a quote compared to if my husband is at home. I’m glad you talked about it as it’s made me feel better that it’s not just us going through it sometimes.

    My husband is a carpenter (not Cornwall) and he takes huge pride in his work, brings indoor shoes and a hoover everywhere with him and always comes back to fix anything that warps over time etc. I know there are a huge amount of bad tradespeople around but I wanted to say there are good ones if you keep looking, definitely getting recommendations from friends is best if at all possible.

You're doing so well and you're such an inspiration to me and many others I'm sure! People in all industries seem to just not do a complete or good job, and whatever the reason for that trend is, it's definitely a thing and as a consumer you are not alone in having to deal with it! I hope you're able to get things fixed properly and have a more positive experience soon :) xx

    You can definitely style mismatched bedside tables as long as there is some element about them that is similar (wood type, time period, shape, etc.) You can even paint two very different pieces in the same colour to unify them. You can also unify two different tables with matching lamps. Guest rooms are a great place to experiment with new ideas because you don't have to see it every single day if you don't like your first attempt.

  • @jax_makeup
    @jax_makeup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I haven't personally dealt with this myself, but have had a number of friends, family and neighbors who've had bad experiences. I definitely don't believe you are alone. It seems to be so common. Our landlord is an architect and he mentioned that people aren't being adequately paid, they're often short handed, and they are swimming in work. Thus, leading to sloppy work. It's just disappointing.
    I am so here for the samples and new decor! Can't wait to see how it turns out

    I've followed you for a while and love what you've done with your house so far. As far matching bedside tables, you may eventually decide you don't need that. As long as they're about the same size, shape, and not too disparate in style, you can achieve that casual cottage style. Also, if they have anything in common - a curve, a proportion, a similar color, they'll be related enough to look good together, as long as the size is similar. I don't know about you, but I love the casualness of asymmetry.

    I've had similar experiences with trade people ... scaffold guys trashing a complete lavender border, I had to replace. On taking down the scaffolding they broke a peg tile on the front elevation which had just been done, they didn't own up to it. Electricians put a fan switch in the loft when it should have been in a cupboard and they also burnt my carpet. I also arranged for a carpenter/joiner to the replace the casement windows (like for like in my 1860s Victorian house), he gave me a price I waited for over six months to do the work, arranged a time and day he never turned up, no explanation, he never contacted me, so I had to start all over again. We had the house completely 're-roofed, they started then went on holiday for two weeks. That's just a few. It's such a nightmare I do as much as I can myself but obviously you have to rely on electricians, plumbers etc. 😤😤😤😤

      Hi Maddie, do as much research as possible regarding reviews and standards of any company you use.
      Check a Trade is a register that I use not sure if that’s in your neck of the woods.
      Also fbook community pages for your local area are really useful for recommendations.
      Word of mouth is invaluable.
      Also be very clear regarding the standard you expect with regards to the finish and emphasis on leaving the area clean at the end of the day and completion of the job.
      I’d mention you have pets and you don’t want any materials left to prevent any possible injuries to them.
      And as a previous comment mentioned only pay the full amount on completion of the job.
      My son is an apprentice electrician and he said there’s no way he’d leave a hole in the ceiling he’d definitely either fit a rose or plaster it depending on what the client prefers😊

  • @dottiebaker6623
    @dottiebaker6623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Over the years, I've learned that I can insist on a contract from tradesmen, and that in that contract you need to be VERY specific about what they will do and will not do. When you talk with with a prospective tradesman, you must ask questions! If they show any signs of discomfort or annoyance with that, don't hire them. A good tradesman will want you to be happy with the result of his work. Getting recommendations and actually contacting them/seeing the work is essential. You aren't imagining that there is rampant sexism in the trades. You can be assertive about what you want, and you must be clear - a good tradesman who knows what he's doing will work with you. In my experience, the older men are better at this. But every now and then you'll find a good younger one. I don't hire younger ones unless someone I know gave them a stellar recommendation. It isn't easy, but eventually you two will find the people who will do a good job, and who you feel comfortable working with. Good luck!!

  • @christydavis8490
    @christydavis8490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They will ABSOLUTELY take advantage of you no matter your age. Before they start the work go over a list of what is expected so there is no question of what they do or dont do like cleaning up after themselves, filling holes, etc....(the whole job). Even then you HAVE to watch them as they are doing the work and comment on what is a problem, what is a concern or remind them of what they are supposed to do IN REAL TIME and before they leave for the day go through the work they've done and do not let them leave the mess. If you show you are on top of it it is harder for them to take advantage.

    I had to have my roof replaced, as well as the ceiling in my front bedroom due to a roof ventilation issue that led to mold and compromised the rafters. The contractor crew didn’t put down any cardboard to protect the wood floors as they spent weeks working in the room. The wood floors are painted and the paint is all gashed and nicked up now. They also left the ceiling seam poorly done over the closet door, and the door covered in some kind of brown stuff that won’t come off. The door is stuck shut due to the bad ceiling seam above it.
    When I reached out to the same contractor to fix my sump situation in the basement, he was supposed to come the week of Thanksgiving LAST YEAR to fix it. He never showed up. I spent the winter and spring with hoses up the basement stairs and out the window. Having to defrost them with kettles of hot water morning after morning during the times when the basement was flooded from snow melt. A friend came and fixed the situation this past summer.
    Contractors are notorious for this type of behavior. Not showing up, ghosting, etc.
    I always thought if you are paying good money for a professional, then the quality of the work, and the work ethic, would be professional. I was wrong.

    I dont know why, but so many tradesmen are like this. They don't realize that they are a disservice to the whole trade. Always a good idea to go on word of mouth, recommendations from friends, neighbours and family (so you can always view their finished work standard!). Also, if you're lucky, there are frequently retired local painters/decorators, who are brilliant at finessing other peoples' work, and they will not charge the earth. When you have found one they are like gold-dust! Loving the ideas for the spare bedroom :)

    The best advice when dealing with trades people is to keep an eye on everything they're doing and just be honest with them. If you're not happy with the quality of work tell them and ask for it to be rectified while they're on site. If they're part of a big company and not independent then take pictures and post online to let other people know that they're not doing a good job. Also, I wouldn't pay someone who left my house in a mess and didn't do the job properly in the first place. They won't ghost you if they're waiting to be paid.

The type of products that they will use and ? Them if its not.. 2nd hold back final payment until your 100% satisfied. Believe me they will want that final.payment. Remember they work for you. I've never given more than one third for supplies, next third half way through the job, last third on completion. If it makes them angry that's on them. I'd also Let them know what you are expecting. We've had no luck with tradespeople either and we're quite a bit older than you, so can sympathise. Basically they can get away with it because there's a shortage of people wanting to do that sort of work, so they don't struggle for work. Legally in England, you don't have much recourse if they do a rubbish job. When we had our house re-painted 4 years ago, they splashed sealant over every window in our house which still hasn't come off and looks a mess. Had our kitchen redone recently and they didn't take into account the placement of a pipe, so one unit has no kickboard and we're going to have to fashion some sort of boxing ourselves to finish the job.

    Thank you for sharing the difficulties of finding good tradesman! I'm from France, and sometimes, when watching some reno videos around youtube, I feel like I'm the only one being worried about their work (or insurance, relibility etc). A few came to make quotations, and I am always a bit shocked about how they don't communicate, ask question, propose alternatives with a good reason or share how the recomendations are evolving. I gather informations before meeting them so I have important questions, and they seem far from these considerations, it's not reassuring.

    The problem with British Education is that it doesn’t encourage people to work with their hands, and become Craftspeople. My Builder (Italy) is very clever, takes pride in his work, is honest, and tidies up after himself.

    Oh my gawd, Maddie, I'm sooo excited for the project Green Room yayy!! As a fellow wavy haired girl, I know the frizz struggle and would love to try out the Boucleme!! Especially now, since I have really dry hair during these winter times!
    and btw - I think its totally fair to complain, when the tradesmen leave your house awfully messed up and undone! Feel ya!

    Had the same thing with tradesmen at our flat. It was horrible to experience. I was made to feel like I was being over the top when they did a horrendous job at everything they did. My grandad, uncle and brother are tradesmen (don't live nearby) and came to visit and were horrified. They couldn't believe how shoddy the work was. So I think it could be being young and shy and just not wanting to be a pain but I've learned to only ever hire someone who's recommended by someone I know and trust (or I bribe my brother to do it 😅). So you're not alone!

    I work with a lot of trades and there’s definitely a range. If you find a good one, hold onto them like you would a hairdresser.
    Deficiencies are such a pain, but it’s necessary because expectations should be set before a project and then you have to hold people accountable to them afterwards. Having a clear scope of work and contract is really helpful for those “forgetful” contractors that say you didn’t have a whole 30 min conversation about a specific detail in a project. I feel like a nag sometimes when I’m pointing out all the things that need to be fixed, but they agreed to a certain scope and they aren’t meeting it. I just push through and try to stay neutral and refer to the contracts. Those items you pointed out are not acceptable, I’d be pissed and holding back money until it was completed. It would be difficult to have them take their shoes on and off every time, and they may need them on for safety, but there is not reason they shouldn’t have been putting down floor protection.
    Edit: and definitely sexism can still play a large role in how you are treated and the work result. Good tradespeople will initially speak to you assuming you don’t know anything, but they don’t talk down. And then there’s all the others. Money and youth will also lend some to try and pull the wool over your eyes about costs and what the final work should be. Best bet is to make sure you are on site on the major project days like start and finish. Insist on reviewing the work with them before they leave and get dates on when they will come back to address. There’s a good podcast by a female architect that helps go through the processes in a project for homeowners to help them understand better when dealing with their contractors and trades. It’s called “Get it Right with undercover architect”, it is Australian, but she makes the lessons universal.

    The hair set would be an amazing Christmas gift for my daughter. She has beautiful ringlet curly hair but often gets frustrated with frizz and rubbish curly hair products. Would be great to try these! It’s definitely a process, and an expensive one at that 😂

    I have an MDF door in a built in cupboard in my hallway. I am happy with the work the carpenter did for us but I have a feeling it just isn't the greatest material in the world. Might be better to go for a pine door if you get them redone x

    My son and his wife have gone through this. He inherited my parents house, he's had them turn up and ask if his dads in. They have been ripped off so many times! He's finally found a man who he really likes.
    What I've noticed, TH-cam everything. Watch tutorials on what your trying to accomplish. And do most of the prepping yourself.
    I wonder if your doors warped because they hadn't been protected enough. My son now, will not allow them to not answer. But it doesn't happen overnight

I had a big dicussion with them and they just didn't want to do it even tho it that they would bring it in ok there website and as soon as my boyfriend walked in and said they should do it, they did it!!

    My husband and I are both project managers and deal with tradesmen everyday. It is disappointing but truly the only way to manage quality is to ensure you only agree to pay in progress payments and do not pay the final payment until the works are complete and you are happy with them. That final payment can be held to pay for rectification of the workmanship. Its hard but don’t be pressured into paying for works that are not complete to your standard. Try to get lump sum prices and avoid hourly rates and paying upfront for materials, if trades have had to ‘invest’ in your project, labour, materials etc, they will come back to get paid. It can be hard, but sometimes worth committing to a higher lump sum price upfront to get better quality. Also read the T&Cs in contracts and quotes and make sure you can dictate the conditions you are happy with. You don’t have to agree with everything they give you. Good trades are worth every penny so I hope you find some local to you.

    Madeline, I want you to know that in our last home, we had the same green wall color with cream furniture and red and cream accents with my love for red and cream toile and my teapots and tea cups collection. It was so fresh yet warm and cozy and we had so many compliments on our living room/ dining room. We incorporated some our antiques too. I really miss that home and the palette we chose. BTW I’m from Northern California with a passion for English Cottage. Both sides of my family are from England, Wales, and Ireland. I’m definitely an old soul at heart…. I love EVERYTHING you both are doing with your very special home! ❤️❤️❤️

    Side note: you mentioned that the crisps bags are recycled by terra. I saw a few videos about them and how it’s basically a scam… i was quite shocked because it seems to be a large scale program. I can try and find the documentary if you’d like!

    I wonder if the cabinet doors were just made with too thin ply and that's why they warped? Maybe as a temporary solution the clasps can be repositioned?

    I know you love green, but I think either a soft blue or light buttery yellow would look good in the spare room. I would do a feature wall behind the bed in a lovely wallpaper, and a crystal chandelier (nothing too gaudy). The wallpaper would determine what type of curtains. For side tables, I wouldn't worry about them matching. I would just make sure they are the same paint color.
    The curtains in the other room could have a solid color added at the bottom and edge to make them look custom without having to buy new ones.

    Hi, Madeleine. My husband and I were recently talking about the issues that seem to be plaguing people everywhere, shoddy work from contractors. We live in the U.S. in a modest home and it seems without fail, even though we are paying top price, we get second rate work. We aren’t wealthy and it is a big hit to our bank account when we hire contractors for home repairs. I don’t want to sound like a cranky, old lady but it appears as if a considerable number of tradesmen lack pride in their craft these days. It’s rather sad.
