Hi Cliff. As I've said in a few of your videos, I don't say much, but I've never missed any of your outings. You had a pristine place to camp. The birds, the serenity, and the campfire was perfect. The hammock, I dunno about that. I too need to be able to move around. I slept in a hammock once and woke with a numb arm and shoulder, could barely get out of the thing! I mentioned about a year ago I was diagnosed with COPD shortly after I began hiking with my DJI drone which I had follow me freely on my hikes. It was kinda like hiking with a friend because it was able to maneuver around all obstacles without my interaction. COPD is not going to completely stop me from enjoying nature this year! It'll be slower going and shorter hiles, but I will trekk on. You're a great inspiration to a lot of people, Cliff, and we all appreciate you. Be safe, my friend.

I've been hammock camping for about 10 years now and prefer it over sleeping on the ground. Most of my friends use an underquilt, but I use my air mattress inside the hammock and sleep very well. The air mattress provides plenty of insulation from the cold, and it also allows me to side sleep. I'd recommend you give it another try and see if you like it better.

I just loved watching the fire and listening to the birds singing. So very peaceful. If only I could smell that campfire! Thanks, Cliff!

Welcome to hammock camping! I use an under quilt and then open up my bag and use it as a blanket. One piece of gear that I would recommend carrying when using the hammock is a warm hat. Your face/head will get colder faster in the hammock. It adds very little weight to your pack and it's better to have it and not need it than be uncomfortable.

I have a good hammock tent story for you. Truth in the Appalachian is stranger than fiction. I camped in a tent hammock suspended about six feet off the ground. It had a rope ladder that I pulled up before I retired for the night. My campsite was near Blowing Rock NC. I was too tired to cook dinner, and just ate a sandwich I bought in Morgantown. I dutifully brushed my teath and put my toothpaste, wipes, and sandwich wrapping paper in my bear can I left at the bottom of the tree. It was a comfy sleep with nighttime in the 50s. All of the sudden, I woke up from a dream where I felt this large flat brush slide down my back. I thought, why is there a brush swiping my backside? I woke up to a large NC black bear (same size as a PA bear) who walked under my tent hammock and tried to pry open my bear can.i silently listened to the bear shuffle around my campground with my bear spray. Apparently, he didn't realize that the top of his body bumped into a human's backside in a tent. I heard the bear make a disappointed sound as he walked down the hill side. Ii went back to sleep and woke to find my unopened bear can at the bottom of the hill. I think that hammocks are pretty comfy and that you can camouflage yourself pretty well. I had a down comforter instead of a sleeping bag, but I was warm.

This was an unexpected, superb way to start my end-of-week mental wind down! TH-cam is loaded with "spectacular" winter camping, but I like the calm, simple, slow-paced spring and summer camping. Thanks Cliff!

Fantastic video thanks Cliff. I could not sleep like that I’m claustrophobic. The fire was beautiful to watch and listen to. You had a real orchestra of birds singing, nothing better. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care

So awesome Cliff I am glad you got out in a hammock. My first couple times in Hammock it was very constructive however I didn't quite have it set up right there is a way to set it up where you are laying flat and can move around quite a bit I look forward to us camping together in hammocks and enjoying a cup of coffee together I look forward to it brother you got my number. God bless you brother take care

Perhaps a ground cloth (footprint) to put your equipment on. Overhead tarp if for no other reason to catch dew. Multiday trips with a wet sleeping bag are no fun at all.

I love backpacking first year I went I slept in a tent but every year after I used a hammock it in my opinion its so much more comfortable. I also camped on that section of trail quite a few times but down at the heartline campsites

There's a fellow here on TH-cam named Kenneth Kramm that has a video on a DIY half bridge hammock. It has a walking stick as a spreader bar on one side so the hammock is wider near his shoulders and head and comes to a point at his feet. I imagine that gives more room for upper body mobility. I may have to try it myself at some point.

Just did my first overnight in a hammock. I really enjoyed it. Nice lightweight option for hiking and biking. Best part for me was easier in and out. Getting older it's harder getting up and down out of a tent. But anything is good as long as it gets you out hiking.👍

Thanks for this video. I was curious about sleeping in a hammock. I’ll stick with a tent. The bird song was great. I was watching while sitting near my window and had to keep putting the video on pause to hear if it was the birds outside my house or the birds at your campsite.

If you want a lightweight tent it's best to go with something like a trackking pole tent they work amazing and that's what I go with for all my hike knees anyway keep up the amazing TH-cam videos

Just watched this. I’ve used a hammock for backpacking for many years. I too have had a few nightmares while sleeping in one. But I never had one while in a tent because I could never get to sleep in the tent. Watch some more hammock related videos to improve your setup. Btw was this near one of the controlled burn areas, it looked sort of familiar from my time on the AT earlier this year.

I found the video peaceful but I have to admit I liked always to camp in a meadow at the edge of the tree line because of able to see the stars at night and I always if possible point in the direction of the rising sun to catch first break of sun rise in the morning but was just me when I could get out and enjoy the quiet nature far from the noise of population but I still like the video you in joy and find peace that works for you thank you for bringing us along

    Now it makes sense.
When you did the "Going Thru Fire" video you quickly showed the hammock. Thinking that not like Cliff to get something new and not give us a big review.
First heard about hammock camping from my brother. He was a boy scout leader and said if he ever did the AT, hammock was for him.

Sorry Cliff, but I don't see you using a hammock again (to sleep overnight) any time soon. I have a few neighbors that have them slung on a steel frame. they used it during the day for an hour or so when they first got it. Like anything else, it's a novelty at first that wears off rather quick. Maybe there are some sailor's that can tell us if they still use canvas hammocks on war ships. As you said I think your air mattress in a tent is far more comfy and probably safer.🙃🙃😆😆
