One of Beethoven's most enigmatic works. In none of the other 32 sonatas do we hear anything like the musical fabric of Sonata 31
The first movement is Moderato cantabile molto espressivo - "Pastorale." This is still only an introduction to the future events that will take place in the 3rd movement, they are still quite far away. There is serenity and confidence in the piece
The second movement - Allegro molto - is a rather crude and even vulgar German song
The third - Adagio ma non troppo - Fuga (Allegro ma non troppo) - is the catharsis of the whole piece. All of the major and most important events will occur in this section. An introduction similar to Bach's Passions, two very sublime arias and an exceptionally brilliant two fugues.
