      Those who emerge at the top of any group are generally not the best. Boris was chosen by the Tory Party and the general public for his media celebrity. He kept us amused. Someone like that is unlikely to be able to handle a catastrophe effectively.

    The first thing Boris should have done is close the airports and ferry services. We probably wouldn't have needed lock downs. Now that really did ruin the economy. It was utterly cruel letting elderly relatives die alone without loved ones seeing them for the last time

    • @AJ-hi9fd
      @AJ-hi9fd 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The best thing that Boris could have done was to carry on as usual and advise that only the sick and elderly take extra precautions, as most do every winter.
      The fall out from the lockdown has generated far more problems than it solved, but lockdown isn’t even questioned in the whitewash of an enquiry.

    • @steve6375

      If you listen to the inquiry evidence in Module 2 in full, you will see that scientists said that closing down international travel (the virus mainly came to us via Europe) would have made little difference. In fact, because the Covid variants became more infectious and less harmful (luckily) it may have been advantageous to let in the later strains as quickly as possible.

If she and other scientists had gone more public it was necessary for the government to be the ones taking and making proper of public, hospital and care. Staff, infrastructure systems for daily living, getting medicines (such as were ready for safe public vaccinations) and proper ppe equipment for media staff. Covid tests, out there as priority . And working out... Very diff8 in such a fast changing situation.... Business. Education contuance and support. If government acted quicker. Appropriately on the information and advice. What surprises me here is that the Professor didn't have clear timeline notes in front of her when she was asked about timing. Instead, she says 'let's have a think'. Surely things could be a bit more precise than this? This lady seems more articulate and communicative than Whitty...but surely notes are a good prompt for things that happened a while ago now...unless notes are discouraged of course!

      Depends WHEN the notes are actually written. e.g. the night before giving evidence to support your story? OR at the time because you are worried that the Prime Minister lacks a working brain and the PM is prone to BLAME ANYONE ELSE to save himself?

    • @daigeorge
      @daigeorge 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You’re not allowed to sue notes when giving evidence except under special circumstances. You can refer to your witness statement as a reminder but I imagine she was being asked about something that wasn’t in her statement in order to test her recollection of events. The idea is to get a genuine answer rather than a rehearsed one.

    From memory covid cases did not take a particularly sharp upturn. Many cases where mistakenly identified as a covid 19 variant when the infection was a covid infection significantly more well known and with a similar mortality rate, that being the common flu. Difficult to diagnos, because the symptoms are so very similar.
    Indeed if you look at the No's for that period from the ONS and compare to No's of the previous 5 years to get an average of the No. of flu cases, at that time of year; based on simple arithmetic, covid cases must have gone down. The covid 19 virus out competed by other covid variants.

      Covid is not the same as flu. 24 million plus infections in the UK, of which 230,000 have died is evidence of that per WHO stats.

    To be fair, she does say 'why weren't we explaining clearly enough that this is what we needed to do?' and in my opinion she was right. She thought the graphs and them saying 'we need to get a grip' was 'explaining' the situation to scientifically illiterate MPs and gov., but their reports and summaries never said in plain English something like 'In our view, we are 90% certain that unless we take drastic action and start a lockdown NOW, the gov will be responsible for 50,000 needless excess deaths, saturation of the NHS and the need for longer/more drastic lockdowns in the near future with increasingly severe economic and health risks. Delaying lockdowns by 2 weeks will cause approx 50,000 excess deaths which the government will have to later explain to it's electorate.' i.e. as if talking to someone who barely scraped through O-level maths and who doesn't want to be sacked. In future, they need to be a lot clearer on their recommendations and expected outcomes in different scenarios.

    The interesting thing is that the main culprits were the experts, not the politicians. In some countries (Sweden in Europe, many others in other continents), there were no significant actions against covid , and they didn't have bad results (i.e. worse than a severe winter flu).
    Prof. Ferguson did a tour for some key eurpean governments and scared them with terrible predictions. Not any politician wanted to take unpopular measures because they live of popular opinions.
    It is interesting the comparison of Europe with Asia and Africa. Nobody wants to do it. Some people dont want to docthe real comparisons because they only want to blame the politician charge, be it right wing or left wing, depending on the particular country.
    For me , this lady and her "expert" mates are more guilty than the clown Boris. IMO, official and institutional science has had a massive failure and it is the most important thing to learn. It is also applicable to some other fields, where science is having a credibility crisis .
    If we want to not repeat the covid errors, we should search the real responsibles.

      Actually Sweden's RW response to Covid decimated the Swedes. They soon changed to incorporate better masking, better vaccines, better health care. If they had continued to kill their citizens, especially the old, and the young, they would have been found frozen in some snowbank somewhere.

    Let’s do what the stoical people from previous generations did, don’t test and carry on unless you feel too poorly.
