Richard achieved the “Pingy” sound by playing the piano through a rotating Leslie speaker. Genius. Underrated for sure.

The album cover is an upside down ear. Some people thought it may be a nose but it's actually an ear.
And most people think this is when Pink Floyd finally found who they were going to become post Syd Barrett!
This song was the beginning of their new final identity. Also more than a song it's more like a piece of music such as a Mozart's Requiem or Beethoven's 9th symphony! That's who these guys are for the 20th century!! They're our Mozart/Beethoven!!

    • @eastonmartin1400

Yes, to me, it's the point where they found their formula.

Well, its on its side, not upside down, but otherwise yeah.

Well friend, I do have a story. Back in 1971 when this album came out, I happened to be stationed at Ft. Carson in Colo. Springs. One Sat. nite I went to a club and this woman invited me to her apt. to listen to this album. I don't think I had ever heard any Pink Floyd at that time. I was 21 at the time. It was my first experience with cannabis as well. Needless to say, I had an out body experience that nite and Pink Floyd has been my favorite band of all time. My three favorite bands are Pink Floyd, Nightwish, and The Grateful Dead.

"As the band were searching for transitions between sections, David Gilmour went to plug in his wah wah pedal to try and crank out some funk. What he didn’t realize was that he plugged it in backwards, creating high pitched quacks and caws that were reminiscent of seagull calls. Delighted with his happy accident, the band recorded the effect and dropped it into the composition’s middle section" - Far Out Mag
"Sometimes great effects are the results of this kind of pure serendipity, and we were always prepared to see if something might work on a track." - Nick Mason

Another great Floyd reaction! This is their 6th album, Syd was only one their first and half of their second. This is the album where Pink Floyd became the cosmic power Pink Floyd. Every album before was a stepping stone toward this moment.
Those ancient seabird sounds were David with his guitar.
Roger was a brilliant lyricist and conceptualist, and a damn fine bass player when it came to playing with feel. While not the most technical or skilled (David had to play some of the more difficult bass parts throughout the band's career, including everything where a fretless bass was involved, there's something about Roger's style that grabs the listener. The band was a cohesive unit until around 1977 where Roger's ego took over and he began to believe he was Pink Floyd and the rest of the band were essentially session musicians. I'm fully in league with camp David but there's no denying that the band was at its peak with all four members working together as one. In the end though, it turned out Roger needed the band more than the band needed Roger.

everyone is always barrett/gilmour/waters,,,,,and rightly so,, but,,, without richard, there would have never been the floyd,,,at least as we know it,,,same for nick mason on drums,,,this was a cosmic line up that only happens once in a lifetime, and for that period of time all the stars were lined up just so,,and lucky for us (mankind) they recorded it all

    Magical Genius.
‘Echoes’ was my introduction to Pink Floyd in 1971, I was 15.
I immediately went out and bought it. I still have that original Vinyl Album.
I also remember that the Album cover is a ear. ‘Echoes’ is one of my all time favourite Pink Floyd tracks.
There’s a few. Especially the whole of the ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ Albums. Pure Genius.
I too highly recommend the Live performance in Gdańsk, Poland, in 2006.
It was the last performance that David Gilmour and Richard Wright played ‘Echoes’ together, with Richard Wright sadly passing away 2 years later.

Great reaction to an utterly great composition, unique and timeless music that sounds as fresh today as it did over 50 years ago, nobody before or since has really matched their scope, musicianship and innovative brilliance, a truly original and epic band. (the 'whale' sounds are made by David on his guitar)

...and that sound was found accidentally, when David plugged in his wah-wah pedal the wrong way around, i.e. the output to the input and vice-versa. Such a wonderful, lucky accident!

I much prefer early PF to the later output as Roger’s angst became too dominant. My favourite albums are Atom Heart Mother, Relics, Ummagumma and Meddle (all produced when Roger, David, Nik and Rick were all still fully engaged, Syd’s influence was still strong). I never understood the idea of getting high when listening to them…they take you on far more interesting journeys than any drug.

Incredible, Pink Floyd is on another level!
Absolutely "Echos" at Gdansk Poland in 2006 is an Epic Performance, they perform both parts 1 and 2consecutively and in its entirity. A 26 minute video to do both parts'
In 2006 Pink Floyd still consisted of Dave Gilmour Rick Wright, and Nick Mason is not at this concert so the bands backup drummer Steve DiStandislao played drums.
What makes this "Echoes" live performance special, is that it was probably the last time Gilmour and Wright sang this song together, Richard Wright died of Cancer in 2008. For 36 years, from 1970 to 2006, the two have beautifully shared the vocals, harmonizing beautifully.
It funny, there was a high part of the harmony and a low part, and they would switch parts at a whim, one time Gilmour sings the high parts, and sometimes Wright would sing the high part.
After Rick Wright died in 2008, Gilmour said he would never sing or play the song again.

Side 1 is an eclectic mix, with the final track "Seamus" highlights their sense of humour with a real dog recorded howling along to Dave Gilmour on guitar for this pure Blues track.
First track "One of these days" is am awesome mostly instrumental
"Pillow of Winds" as beautiful as it sounds.
"Fearless" includes recording of Liverpool Football Club supporter's (the Kop) singing You'll Never Walk Alone
San Tropez (San tro pay) light jazz summer beach
    Just a great album

WELL TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION HAS ANYONE EVER GOTTEN HIGH AND LISTENED TO THE SONG?, I CAN ANSWER YES!!
THE YEAR WAS 1975 AND I WENT TO A PINK FLOYD CONCERT THAT WAS HELD IN AN OUTDOOR VENUE, A STADIUM, I WAS 18 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME!! AT THAT TIME PINK FLOYD HAD WHAT THEY CALLED QUADRAPHONIC SOUND, BASICALLY SURROUND SOUND AT ITS EARLIEST CONCEPTION!! THERE WOULD BE A TOTAL OF FOUR SPEAKER BANKS WHICH SURROUNDED THE CROWD ON THE FIELD, TWO SPEAKER BANKS ON STAGE AND TWO BEHIND THE CROWD!!! THIS SETUP GAVE THEM THE ABILITY TO MAKE SOUND TRAVEL IN A CIRCLE AROUND ALL FOUR SPEAKERS AND AROUND THE CROWD ON THE FIELD!! BEFORE THE CONCERT STARTED I DID A TAB OF LSD!! I WAS ON THE FIELD AND BY THE TIME THE BAND GOT AROUND TO PLAYING THIS SONG I WAS WELL INTO MY LSD TRIP!!! I KNEW THE SONG, NEVERTHELESS DURING THE MIDDLE PART WITH ALL THE SOUNDS AND NOISES, THE BAND WAS MAKING IT GO IN A CIRCLE!! AS THIS INTENSITY STARTED GROWING IT WAS GOING FASTER AND FASTER AROUND THE SPEAKERS!! OF COURSE BEING ON AN LSD TRIP I BEGAN TO FEEL THE SENSATION AS IF THE STADIUM WAS TURNING INTO A FLYING SAUCER AND BEGINNING TO LIFT OFF THE GROUND INTO THE HEAVENS!!! JUST ABOUT THE TIME I WAS FEELING VERY PARANOID AND READY TO FREAK OUT THEY BEGAN THE PART OF THE SONG WITH MUSIC AGAIN THAT I RECOGNIZED AND IMMEDIATELY I JUST LEVELED ME OFF!!! IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE SONG WAS PLAYED EXACTLY FOR MY LSD TRIP, AS STRANGE AS THAT MAY SOUND!! IT IS CERTAINLY AN EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL PROBABLY NEVER FORGET UNLESS I GET DEMENTIA OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!

Roger waters definitely can be a asshole but he was a massive part of their sound throughout the 70s and wrote a majority of the lyrics. There would not be Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here, Animals or The Wall.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times...when you world turns to shit and you've had a crappy day, you come home, pour a scotch (or similar), or glass of red, drink that offing it down. Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one and go turn off all the lights. Put THIS or any Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!

The cover is a close-up image of a human ear, rotated on its side. The LP packaging was a gatefold, so when you opened it and rotated it vertically you'd see the complete ear. Superimposed over it are 'echoing' waves of sound within a pool of water.

According to Wikipedia: Nick Mason said the high pitched wails starting at 15:30 are due to a happy mistake of Gilmour plugging his way-wah peddle in backwards.

Echoes is a masterpiece. Watch the live version of Gilmour and Wright Live in Gdansk. The last minutes is pure magic. And it was the last ever performance of the piece as Wright passed away some time after that performance and Gilmour will not play it again without Wright. Watching the Gdansk version explains why.

I do feel this album was kind of a bridge between their more experimental, psychodelic era and their still very progressive, but more accessible era, that they're most known for. It has a bit of both in its sound.

    • @SpaceOdditiesLive
      @SpaceOdditiesLive ปีที่แล้ว +3

To be honest, Syd Barrett leaving the Floyd was the best thing that ever happened to the band. If he had stayed, the Floyd would have probably just carried on making songs about elves and teapots and mice called Gerald, and would have failed commercially. They would probably be forgotten by now. It was, of course, extremely tragic the way he left them, but to eject him and then fill his place with David Gilmour set the stage for the phenomenal music that we love so much. The fact that this channel is reacting to "Meddle" 52 years after its release shows you that the Floyd, post-Barrett, produced timeless music that people will still be reacting to in another 52 years.

    • @Tarkus_
      @Tarkus_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@SpaceOdditiesLive I agree with you completely. His journey was certainly tragic, but without it, we'd be missing one of the great eras for any band in history.

The album cover is a human ear (the balck obviously being the ear hole). As the album is a gate fold, the back of the album is the top half of the image. I'd recommend searching it to get a better idea😂
